Vicente Fox is not going to be happy about this.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The House of Representatives voted to build a wall along the US border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration.

The 260-159 voice vote on an amendment to a bill on illegal immigration "mandates the construction of specific security fencing, including lights and cameras, along the Southwest border for the purposes of gaining operational control of the border.

"Fencing has been designated in sectors that have the highest number of immigrant deaths, instances of drug smuggling and illegal border crossings," because of the large number of would-be immigrants who die in the desert attempting to cross the US border.

The US border with Canada was not forgotten. The bill "includes a requirement for the Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a study on the use of physical barriers along the Northern border."

The US-Mexico border is 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) long.

Personally, I dont know if we can really "wall up" the mexican boarder, but we need to do SOMETHING to tame the illegal immigration coming in from the "southern USA" :neener:

Hey, another solution presents itself! Grab all illegals, and ship 'em to Iraq as labor for Halliburton! Dadgum, what a simple and elegant solution! They get what they want - a job, and we get what we want - them gone!

Who is going to build the wall?

Illegal aliens of course!

They are the only ones willing to do the job! :neener:

It's about time. Mexico's problems are not ours and thye need to deal with them, we should not have to be invaded so they can not go belly up. Immigration into the US is a privlage, not a right.

Wow. They're gonna do a study concerning building a fence along our northern border. Yup. Gotta do something to slow down the hordes of French speaking Canucks who've been invading our country for decades.
The CIS estimates that upwards of three hundred of the wily boogers sneak across every year.

Good build it long and high. Do the same to the north that way they can stop griping about our firearms getting into their pristine peace loving country.

We have a ton of illegals coming through that border too, they just dont look as offensive as the ones coming from the South. They also either speak English or head straight to ethnic enclaves where noone will notice them (we call it "China Town" around here).

For the record we have actual factual proof that terrorists have crossed on THAT border.

I know! We can hold all the captured illegal border crossers and make them
into indentured servants. Then they can pay their debt by wall building. :D

I love being able to come on THR and read about current events that I'm interrested about...It's better then any news station IMHO!

Oh yeah and I vote to close the border.

They just say that so they to cover their you-know-whats, you know 'it's only fair'. Nobody cares about illegal canadians.

First off, your innuendo concerning how an immigrant looks is outa line. M'kay?
Secondly, the vast majority of border offenders cross our southern border. According to most sources, close to a million a year, so it makes sense to attack that hole in our defenses first, it seems to me.
Feel free to rebut if you can.

We don't need a wall we need consequences for persons who illegally enter/stay in the USofA and for those who aid/abet same.
How about imposing heavy fines and using that revenue to fund the wall

I believe that he was referring to the high numbers of illegal Chinese immigrants were crossing over the northern border.
I found the inuendo to be more of a thought provoking sarcasm type of thing

My mistake then. A little less emotion and a bit more thought might be in line for El Bikerbo.:)

All-in-all, I think the wall is excellent news. Whether it will actually be built is another matter. But, at the least, it will drag into the bright light of day all the big and small rats that have been gnawing at the foundations of our society.

You misunderstand. It's to keep us in.;)

I wonder what "security fencing" is. If it's just a chain link fence then they'll learn to bring a bolt cutter with them. Or they'll just climb the fence. We need a Berlin wall with motion detecting machine guns lol. (kidding...)

We need a wall and military patrols, and someone willing to do it and not be buddy buddy with Fox to get a few extra votes.

You made an absurd comment implying that our Northern border was nothing to be worried about. I countered that by pointing out that we have had actual documented instances of terrorists crossing that boarder. You have not refuted that. Instead you have chosen to state that the majority of illegals come in through Mexico, I never stated otherwise. You will also note that I never stated that we should not be addressing the problems with the Mexican border. In fact, your post, which ostendibly is a rebuttal to mine, fails to address even a single item that was stated in my post. In fact, im a little curious as to what exactly it is that your arguing against. I can only conclude that you are trying to state that our Canadian border is not a problem for our national defence. That was the entirety of the statement that I made, so that must be what your are disagreeing with.

You wish to talk about "defense" but you fail to address the fact that the last time a terrorist was caught entering this country with an explosive device it occured at the Canadian border. The fact is that the vast majority of the people crossing in from Mexico are Mexicans, the people crossing the Norther Border are from *everywhere*. Canada has some of the most lax immigration and asylim laws in the world. They are the only nation that actually hired LOCALS to issue visas to people in it's embassies abroad. If a person wanted to get from Afganistan to the U.S. it is easier to go through Canada than through Mexico. Using national security as the justification for a fence, while ignoring the Northern Border is a hollow argument. If your goal is to simply stop illegal immigrants from entering and putting a strain on our social systems then the Southern Border is the place to put it. If you want to keep terrorists out of our country, then the Northern border is a bigger concern.

Oh, and you are misinterpreting your CIS numbers. In this statement:
The CIS estimates that upwards of three hundred of the wily boogers sneak across every year.

You are simply pointing out how many illegal immigrants are in this country who were Canadian citizens. However, the number fails to address the *significantly* larger quantity of Southeast Asians and Middle Easterners that come into the United States by way of Canada. Like I said, our Canadian border is a doorway to the entire world, the Mexican border is a doorway for Mexico. Thats a big difference.

Out of curiosity could you provide a source indicating that "close to a million" illegal immigrants are coming in through the Mexican border each year?

*edit* Since im asking for a source it's fitting that I provide one as well. Here is a nice article detailing the plethora of security problems concerning our border with Canada: http://www.cis.org/articles/2003/canadaborderpanel.html
