Used my pistol for self defense today...

I live in a very bad neighborhood.
Very bad meaning: shootings, gangs, the works.
We are moving out this week to our new house in a much better part of town. :)

I needed some range time to mellow out so I went. All went well.

When I got home there were four young men sitting on the stairs in front of my place. Scary young men meaning gangsters. :( Our new neighbor is a crack head. :mad:

I had my pistol with me, but switched it from my range bag to my pocket while I was still in my truck. It is a full size 9mm Beretta so there is no doubt that I printed with it. One of the guys for sure saw it.

Then I got in my front door without a problem.

I have no doubt that without the pistol I would have had a REAL problem.
This is something you never read about or see on tv. A pistol stopped a fight without being drawn. Guns save lives.
My first sensei told me when I was 11 years old that the best outcome is not to fight, true then, and true 26 years later.
 
glad everything worked out, but it seems as maybe you used your handgun in your pocket as a perventive measure rather than self defense. still best to not have to draw it though whether self defense or not.

First time I have ever thought I would have to use my pistol for self defense. First time I have let people know I have it with me.

With all due respect that attitude may be what's leading to you problems?

Is it possible that these guys simply had no interest in you?

I don't think your gun had anything to do W/it. Most real gangbangers have been in more firefights than you will ever be in. I doubt very seriously that they intimidated in the slightest by a gun in your pocket

Could be, but I don’t think so. I have lived in this neiborhood for years now and know how to deal with all sorts of people. I know that the movies makes you think that gangsters are cool, but in the real world they aren’t. They are violent idiots who will do bad things.

I live around a lot of MS13 bangers, and a few crips, and a few local ones you have never heard of. I know that watching TV you think that what you are saying is true, but it isn’t.
Getting jumped, robbed and beat down is called being mugged. One of my neighbors was just mugged.

i don't know about this. i've had this exact same situation happen more times than i can count and most of the time it's just them hanging out outside not looking for problems. it is usually solved with a simple "hi, how are you guys doing" and they get up and let me in. oh yeah, and i live in the depths of north philly so it's one of the worst areas you could live. if you don't believe me, there have been two shootings on my block within the last year alone.

i agree with treo 100%. if they were true "gangbangers" you by yourself, regardless of your arsenal, are not going to intimidate a whole group of "gangbangers" by yourself. living by the gun, as well as dying by the gun, is a daily part of their lifestyle and one person with a gun is not even going to make them blink.
 
This thread looks quite trollish. Treo a troll? Not so much mike. So you had a pistol in your pocket and you were positive that if you didn't they would have committed an act of violence? I don't buy it. Readiness does not constitute using your gun in self defense.
 
Why are you guys calling him a troll? He just shared a story and he gets attacked by others on this forum.

It's good to see that a gun helped you in your situation. If it didn't actually make the gang bangers move, then at least you would have been ready if anything did happen. You're safe and that's all that counts.
 
they were probley just hanging out,if they were going to start trouble i am sure there would have been some,most experienced gang-bangers arent afraid of guns,and if they were bangers there is a great chance they all were carrying also,but glad to see it turned out good.

I'm curious...Do you live in an apartment? Are the stairs in front of your place shared by others? If so, what would lead you to believe these young men meant you harm? Don't get me wrong...when my creep-o-meter goes off, I pay attention. And I hope you do too. But I agree with others here that - short of an overt assault - you simply have no way of knowing whether you "used" your "pistol for self-defense today." You did however use your pistol to make yourself safer - and there is nothing wrong with that.

I am not sure how anyone that wasn't there could speculate as to the validity of the man's story. Looks like you can choose to accept it as truth or choose to not believe it but, to guess as to what the intent of the other characters in the story is just plain silly.
For my part, I would rather take the word of the man that was there rather than someone that read his post and decided to pick it apart.
 
I'm more than willing to give Mike the benefit of the doubt. He was there, he saw their eyes, he was able to pick up the vibes, he's familiar with how they work in his area.
