Heck, I even forget half the time that I have one in my front pocket.

I try to be diligent--as I don't want to accidentally walk into a Post Office, federal building or school with it. So, in those cases, I just leave it home.

"A bill has been introduced to remove this law. It's a bit inconsistent since a person legally carrying concealed without a CHL (it's legal to do so in your own vehicle) does not have to notify an officer."

Wow... In Maine you cannot carry in your car. That is the biggest reason I am getting my CCW (Taking classes in two weeks....)

I want to be able to put my pistol in a glove box, or behind the seat when going hunting, camping, etc... you have to have the gun out in the open in a vehicle in Maine, or in a part of the car not accesible.

Leroy,

Galco has a product called a "hidden agenda" that has a day planner in front, and in a separate zippered compartment enough room for a full-size .45.

If you are in a car and don't want to use a holster, no one would EVER suspect that there is a pistol and spare magazine in there (except for the weight). I just put in on the passenger's seat.

(Got a traffic ticket once and thought man this LEO would be freaked if he knew. Decided that the best course of action would be to shut up since there is no affirmative duty to notify the LEO in my state. I didn't want the ticket to turn in to an ordeal...he could have asked me to get out of the car.)

...hmmm. Now it seems like it isn't such a good idea to use this product, does it!?

Dan I Am, why do you think its not a good idea to use the product in the situation you described? I guess I don't see the difference between having it in the day planner or having it in the map holder along the door of your car. Was it somehow illegal in that situation? thanks!

In TX it MUST be concealed (obvious intent on your part to conceal it from ordinary observation) but it can be readily accessible, even on your person. That is a new law, passed only in the last legislative session. It created some inconsistencies with the old CHL laws, the notification clause is one example.

Another example is that a CHL holder with a handgun in the car can not legally drive into a parking lot that is posted properly under the criminal tresspass section of the TX law while a non-CHL holder with a handgun in the car is not affected by that section of the law and can legally ignore such postings. I don't know if that inconsistency will be remedied as well or not.

There was some initial concern that the law would reduce the number of CHL applications but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

Sorry for the topic drift...

Hmmm. This is precisely what the Wal-Mart Walk was designed to help with.

There's a diagram around here somewhere....

Enjoy the Nachos :D!

I dont want to hijack however, do you know the law regarding notifying LE's if you are pulled over? Is it a must notify right away or just if he asks?

You can find this info from the state's DOS website

In TX, any time a law enforcement officer interacts with you, you must inform them that you're carrying and that you're a CHL holder.

If they ask for your firearm during the duration of your interaction, you have to do that too.

I like this rule - simplifies matters and lessens chance the cop sees your gun and thinks you're a BG.

not exactly correct

capnswole,

That is a policy statement and explains what the DPS feels is a good practice for citizens. It is not a statement nor a summary of the law.

Here's a summary of the law.

If you are legally carrying a handgun in your vehicle and you are not a CHL holder the handgun must be concealed and you have no legal obligation to notify an officer of its presence.

If you are legally carrying a handgun and you are a CHL holder then the handgun must be concealed and you must present your handgun license when the officer asks you for any identification. If you fail to do so your license can be suspended.

If you are not carrying a handgun and you are a CHL holder then you are under no legal obligation to present your handgun license when the officer asks you for identification.

Here is a link to the law pertinent to CHL holders.

http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/SOTWDocs/GV/htm/GV.411.htm#411.205

Here's what it says:

Sec. 411.205. DISPLAYING LICENSE; PENALTY. (a) If a license holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license holder display identification, the license holder shall display both the license holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the department and the license holder's handgun license. A person who fails or refuses to display the license and identification as required by this subsection is subject to suspension of the person's license as provided by Section 411.187.

why not just lose the bulk of the holster? i carry a full size 1911, the slide fits perfectly into the little watch pocket on the right side of my pants... had the wife sew in a button snap strap to hold the receiver snugly to my side, very slender :)

suspenders help!

I carry a G22 and a Ruger SP101 most of the time, people I shoot with know about the Glock because they have seen the holster. Others are blissfully unaware even when they hug and feel the ridge on my side. I too was self concious when I began to carry but as time passes you will realize the only people who know are the people you tell.

Or the peope who see it when your wife, who forgot about your new belt anchor, pulls up your shirt to show someone how skinny you are in the movie theater parking lot. Not quite as skinny as she thought.

i saved up and got a KelTec P32 with a Fobus paddle holster. The entire rig cost me $250. It has proven reliable, and its so small and light that i often forget i have it on.

Just out of curiosity, why did you go with a paddle holster instead of doing pocket carry?

Because all of my training has occurred with belt holsters, so thats what I'm familiar with. I looked at a Galco pocket holster, but it seems like the paddle holster is faster. I see that Galco now makes a molded leather belt holster for small pistols, including the KelTec, called the "Stinger". Hopefully ill be getting one sometime soon :D

Back to the Glock 17 though. The other night, i went to a bar with one of my buddies and his girl. I left my rig (KelTec) in her car because i was going to be drinking. We all had a grand time.

Thing was, when they dropped me off at home, I forgot my KelTec and rig in her car. her boy friend is one of my regular shooting buddies and he grabbed it for me. I will have by rig back soon, I knew i would be stuck without it for about a week.

i still had my Glock 17 at home. SO, i ran down to the local gun store and purchased a Galco inside the pant holster, and a Galco biter bar gun belt. Its a LOT more than I'm used to concealing, but with a hoodie and proper holster placement, it disappears pretty well. I just need to make sure i don't reach above my head with my strong side, or go climbing over things.

Iv been running this rig for a few days now. I wore it to the liquor store, the movie theater, Walmart, McDonalds, and few other places around town, and nobody noticed.

I think the new rig cost me about $50 total for the holster and the belt. instead of blowing a ton of money on 511 or Blackhawk concealment shirts / vests, i think hoodies are a better option. An Adidas or Reebok hoodie from JC Penny will conceal just as much, without breaking the bank or informing everyone that your carrying. I can spot those things a MILE away, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Very self-conscious with my first concealed carry rig (G17)

You are exactly right, perhaps I can help. Just send that Glock 17 to me and I will be happy so send you a .25 auto or .380 that will hide quite nicely.:D

Seriously , dont worry about anyone spotting your gun . I usually carry a 1911 and could care less if it has a slight bulge.

I came to this thread late.

The durn gun has me hanging the arm like a bent bird trying to fly for a few days until I shifted big wallet to other pocket and put holster in place of the old wallet.

My next problem is going to be 140 degree Arkansas Heat and not a garmet large enough to conceal anything.

I have a coat I favor in winter for this, not too bad. But summer is going to be a challenge.

I carry a colt 1911 commander on a pancake holster which is outside my pants on my belt under my shirt. I went to grab my wallet one day to pay for gas it totally exposed it and I look up and there is a female cop standing in line behind me looking right at it. i look at her to see her reaction as I cover back up and she just looks up at me and gives me a wink and a smile. she was off duty because she was in my home town and had a different city uniform on. I jsut smiled back and went on my way, but I thought it was pretty cool and will never forget that. I know you dont judge a book by its cover but Im a rocker in every aspect. Ive just been a good boy all my life and have a CCL. I guess she is use to everyone in TX having a gun. or maybe i intimidated her with my super charming smile, ha. nah, who knows. but point is, dont worry bout it. if it exposes itsself jsut cover it back up and as you were. If someone calls you out just tell them you are licensed and if they keep it up its better to just hold your tounge and leave. unless they are LEO, then you know the routine.
