Three months ago I bought 2 boxes of the Remington Bulk packs of 550 count .22s at Wal-Mart. Well, I've fired one full box and I have come to the conclusion that this ammo is pure crap. There were 75 rounds that did not fire and I'm betting that well over 1/2 of the rounds were not loaded to the correct capacity with powder. The recoil on these rounds was noticibly less than a normal round, and even the report was diminished. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this with the Remington 22s that Wal-Mart sells. Oh by the way, its not my gun as I own 12, 22 pistols and it happens in all of them. Thanks.

When a bargain "ain't" a bargain

My wife gave me a crisp new $100 bill for my birthday a couple of months back. Part of it was invested in three bricks of the Wally World remington bulk .22 shells. Sure wish I had my money back. It would have been better spent on the lottery. My experience wasn't quite as bad as yours but I had too many misfires and jams. Tried the ammo in my High Standard Sharp Shooter and also my Ruger MKIII Competitor......same results. By the way, I later purchased a carton of the Federal bulk and although had an occasional missfire, it was head and shoulders above the remington (please note the lower case r in remington)........

I really was stunned to realize that Remington would let this stuff be sold. They must know about this. Maybe they don't care. What else would explain this. I bought 2 boxes of the regular Remington 100 packs from my gunshop yesterday and they are all fine.

If you want to shoot cheap ammo try the federal 550 packs. It is usually the least expensive at wal-mart, and there are far less duds than remington. I usually have between 0 and 5 duds per 550 rounds.

The ammo is far from great, but for cheap plinking ammo it is worth the $13.

I agree. When shooting my .22 target rifle (Russian Izhmash) on the range, I stay with Wolf Match Target......seems to be the most consistant. Will almost put five rounds in same hold when at bench rest at 50 yards. For .22 pistol fun, I love the Federal Gold Medal 711B or 719. The former is standard velocity and latter is hv. Federal, IMO, makes excellent ammo for the money. Going to try the Federal in my rifle during my next range trip.

You're not implying that Wally World is purposely purchasing defective ammo for a discount price? I'm not a big fan of W-M, but in this case: the blame is with the mfgr....

Well, I've been nothing but pleased with my bulk packs from WallyWorld. With the exception of the two bricks of Winchester X-Pert that was pure garbage. I ended up giving them away at the range, but I've got a little less than 10k left of other bulk packs from a few different brands.

I have noticed more hard primers(fail to fire with a good firing pin strike) from Remingtons over other brands but nothing like you had.
I would be getting a hold of Remington and see what they have to say about it.

Remington "Gold" bulk pack .22 from W-M is pretty crappy especially in a semi-auto pistol or rifle. I'll get a 'light load' that won't cycle in 1 out of 10 or so rounds. In a revolver or bolt action it would probably be a bit better. I stick to CCI Mini-Mags for my semi-autos, it always runs fine.

remington golden bullets are pure cow droppings.

if you want cheap, federal $12 is the way to go. 1 in a 100 are duds, maybe 5 in 100 are soft and won't cycle a semi-auto pistol, but that's to be expected from dirt cheap ammo. if you want reliability, you pay for it in the form of CCI mini mags, CCI stingers, and Eley target ammo.

I usually buy a brick when payday comes around and to be honest I always get the federal bulk. I tried federal first because of great experience with their other ammo and I have not regretted it.

walmart 22 ammo:

federal $12/550 brick - works enough.

federal auto match $14/350 - no different than the $12/550 brick, other than being dirtier and costing more.

win x-pert $16/525 - annoying that it costs more and doesn't work that great, and is dirtier.

rem golden bullet $16/550 - cow droppings on a platter. clean, but run into lots of weak rounds and duds.

rem thunderbolts $17/550 - somebody needs to throw an injcunction at rem for making these. seriously, why? 25 rounds lead up a rifle terribly. 50 rounds lead up a pistol to where a patch removes shavings. 100 rounds i have problems getting a jag or even sometimes a cleaning rod through the barrel. throw it in the garbage. ironically, they have more power so they do cycle actions reliably.

rem viper/yellow jacket $6/50 - no better than thunderbolts, just a bigger muzzle flash and kick. leads up the barrel. might as well buy the next two on my list...

CCI mini mags $6/100 - work like a charm. clean and accurate.

CCI stingers $7/50 - work like a charm, lots of kick, loud, fun muzzle flash, clean, accurate. i'd put this in a pocket 22 pistol.

Eley - was handed some, but never bought so i don't remember the price... but they are the most expensive from what i've seen. from what i'm told, this is the stuff that olympic and shooting-usa teams use to shoot a 0.5 mm pinpoint at 10-30 yards and group bullets through the same hole. go fig.

The Remington bulk is crap no matter where you purchase it. It's been that way for the past decade. They're doing nothing to improve it. Avoid it always. :cuss:

Same experience with Rem., I have been using the bulk 550 pack of Federal and it has been great. In the last 3 or 4 range trips I really can't remember one failure.

If you want cheap .22 ammo just get Federal. It is always available and it is cheap. It does have some duds, and some weak rounds but is seems to be better than all the other cheap junk out there. There are other OK cheap brands but they don't seem to be as available as Fed and they aren't better so I just always grab Fed.

I don't know why Remington & Winchester can't make a cheap .22 but this isn't a new problem. Couple years and same issues = I don't even look at anything other than Fed for .22. Winchester makes good cheap (WWB) 9mm but somehow they just can't make a .22.

I hate it when people say this, because I have never had a problem. I suppose you wouldn't be making it up, but is just seems hard to believe since it has been the best bulk ammo I have shot.

I bought a lot of this ammo at Dick's for $9.98 a few months ago and love it. I could cover my groups with a nickle at 50 yards sometimes. (Usually a quarter)

I buy federal now because it is so much cheaper, but the thunderbolt ammo has always been accurate, consistent, and reliable. Cleaning isn't bad either and I only clean every 500 rounds.

to be honest, you're the first and only person to say thunderbolts are OK...

let's start with the basics... i shot them out of a few older 22 rifles and p22 and ruger mk3 and 22 snubnose revolver... what have you shot them out of? perhaps there's something different?

I use 2 marlin 25n's with micro groove barrels. Those are what give me the good groups. A marlin 60 with a micro groove barrel. That gun gets dirty with thunderbolts, but it gets dirty with everything else too. A ruger Mk II, it is stainless so that might make a difference.

My friend uses them in two older .22's. I believe one is a remington 514, but I am not positive; the other is an old mossberg. He has had fair accuracy, but I don't know about cleaning. He also has an older H&R revolver he shoots them out of.

They have worked well in all guns, but since then we have mostly shot federal so save a few bucks.

I haven't had a problem with the Remington bulk .22 ammo. My daughter is on her third brick in her 10/22 without a single failure. I've shot almost a full box out of my old Marlin model 25 which is saying A LOT because that things firing pin spring is wore out and doesn't fire most ammo anymore.

batkowski: thats allI buy at wal-mart is theire 22 bulk cartons and ahve never had one blimp in my MK111 Ruger. Good ammo, darn cheap shootin.

I've never had any luck with Rem .22LR's excepting 'YellowJackets'. I gave what I had on hand to my nephew to practice with useing his Marlin 60.
awhile back I was at the range I go to and there was a bunch (100's) of 'Golden Bullets' thrown onto the ground. discarded by some dissapointed shooter I'd say.
YellowJackets did OK in my Ruger pistol about as good as 'Thunderbolts'
not sure they are still being made.
