The most ardent supporters of the second amendment I know are extremely liberal in their politics.

All I can say is you must run with one strange crowd. Whereas there's no question that a few liberals are pro-gun (if that's what you mean by "ardent supporters of the second amendment"), it's been my experience that a pro-gun liberal, if not a classic oxymoron, is certainly an exception to prove the rule.
