"We want to know who has weapons so that first responders can be aware of that information before they enter a home," said Police Supt. Jody Weis at a news conference.

Yes I'm sure that you do want to know who has guns. That way you know what doors to cautiously knock on in the future. I'll pass. Keep your laws north of I-80 please. Why is it that every single gun ban/restriction is to protect police and "the children"? What about our protection?

Yeah, because if they roll on a suspected crack house and nobody there is a registered legal gun owner, then certainly nobody at the address could POSSIBLY be a threat. Because Chicago gun crime is committed by legal owners, not people with criminal histories...

You can bet your next paycheck that once they can identify homes where guns exist then first responders will not enter untill a police officer arrives and guess what, there will NOT be a police officer available!!

That won't last, after the 2nd or third wrongful death suit, or them paying for a disabled child for the rest of their life, they will change, what would be fun is going after the command as in medical response is both Legally and Ethically (they can be sued for failing to do their job, and they can be banned from the profession for failing to do their job), All that happens if they get in court and asked, why didn't you respond, and they say the scene was dangerous, then the next question is what is the danger and how imperiled did you feel.

after that, any ambulance chaser dances to the tune of money money money

I hope the courts can do something about this stupidity. What are they going to do? Put flak jackets on the EMTs when granny with a .38 calls for an ambulance? Take them off when SWAT goes to a crack house where no one has registered a gun?

The police should be more worried about those who don't register. I think they just want to have a list of people to visit when they ban guns again. This is America; it's safe to assume that anyone may have a gun.

I'd wager that at some time in the very near future - shortly after the registration is nearing completion - the police will insist on arriving before other emergency personel and confiscate all weapons in the house "for the safety of all concerned". As an after thought, the police will ask for proof of ownership before you can go down to the station and pick up your gun. Woe is you if you can't find all of the paperwork that they'll ask you for.

Duh ! :cuss:

I am so grateful I don't live under a dictator.
What!? Daley's no dictator. He's only been in office for over 20 years, and it's not like the position was passed down from father to son.

Yeah, where do you think you are? North Korea?

This is interesting-

"Weis said there's no restriction on spouses or relatives of felons buying guns and keeping them in the house where a felon resides."

LHR Gunslinger wrote: "If they want my guns they can have them. I'll be sure to send them the bill."

And OF COURSE they'll send you a check post haste!!

@Buck Snort: They'll either send me a check, my guns or I'll level charges against the officers who took the weapons and then file suit against the city because my 4th AND 2nd amendment rights were infringed. And then I'll file suit with anyone else I can think of.

As a member of my local volunteer fire department I have a lot of experience as a first responder.

I have seen A LOT of guns in all the houses I have been in. However, I've yet to be shot or hear of a incidence where a first responder is shot. Normally when first responders are called it's for a medical... not a assault or something that police deal with.

that's how gun bans get started,as in Australia,Canada registration of long guns, short rifles, tear gas

Actually there has never been a gun ban in Australia, there was a buyback, changes to legislation such as mandatory registration of legal firearms, but never a ban. Oh yeah and that was spurred on by a nut killing 35 others and injuring 21, not registration of firearms... Please at least get your facts right before you go spouting them off as the truth on a worldwide medium.

Buyback, as in give them up for cash, as opposed to just give them up? Please understand this is not an argument, but curious - were you given the option of keeping them, or were you told to turn them in for financial compensation, with no option to retain them in your possession? If so, that is a compensated confiscation, not a "buyback", which, BTW, is a deliberate misnomer, at least here in the US, as the government never owned the firearms, so they cannot "buy them back".
Also, I must needs say in my humble opinion, one criminal killing people shouldn't affect all lawabiding users of a type of tool. This is a none-to-subtle method of expressing distrust from the authorities to the people, "This guy did this with this tool, and we think ALL of you who own the same type of tool are going to do this, so we will remove the tool from you that is like the tool he used to do that!"
I would hazard a guess, judging soley from responses here, (was unable to visit Austrailia in 1988, dagnabbit, ship didn't dock there), I would have to say the attitude and outlook towards firearms ownership is quite different Down Under. If you are happy with it, that's great - your country, your rules. But couldn't you keep Rebecca whatsername down there, to?
