"Required justification" of anything to a government is the first and most potent prerequisite for dictatorship.

You can still exercise your Second Amendment rights in Chicago!**

All you have to do is:

1) Fill out the Chicago Firearms Permit form and sign in all THREE places as indicated by an "X"

2) Submit TWO identical passport size photographs, taken within thirty day of the application. The photo's must show your full face, head and shoulders in a clear and distinguishing manner.

3)Submit ONE copy of your valid Illinois driver's license.

4) Submit ONE copy of a certificate from an Optometrist or Opthalmologist, validly licensed in the State of Illinois, with proof of adequate vision. (20/40, with or without prescription lenses.)

5)Submit ONE copy of your valid Illinois Firearm Owner Identification Card (FOID).

6) Submit an affidavit, signed by a firearm instructor certified by the State of Illinois, attesting that the applicant has completed a firearm safety course which consisted of a least 4 hours of classroom instruction and one hour of range training.

7) You must submit to fingerprinting by the Chicago Police Department at the time of your application.

8) Your application must be submitted IN PERSON at Chicago Police Headquarters at 35th and Michigan Avenue.

9) You must pay a $100.00 NON REFUNDABLE processing fee to have your application considered. Make checks payable to 'City of Chicago'.

10) Once issued, all Chicago Firearm Permits expire 3 years after the date of issuance.

**Make sure that your firearm is NOT on Chicago PD's List (See Below, Post # 68) of "Unsafe Handguns"

try that in this county, well you wont stay in office very long. Im really sick of the cities, they will all eventually pass laws like this. No one is going to stand up to them, so why expect to keep your rights.

empathy implied here, Sonier
(and NO offense intended or implied)
but stick around a few decades
believe it or not, the pendulum is shifting our way
patience and perseverance, just like finding that just right handload, and that right lady :)

never was much justice in judicial
but it could be a lot worse.. lack of system is not the answer

stolen quote from somebody's sig line
"if you run into the street, gun in hand, and no one else is there.. it ain't time, yet"
and it almost always never is time yet, no matter what talking heads on TV are selling you, any/all flavors
if/when it is time, strive as you might, you will be joining the party, not starting the party

TV heh still dont got one of those, seriously moved here from georgia and never got a TV i dont like them, if i want to watch a show, you can watch any of your shows online for free, if you want a movie you got netflix ;)

alohachris, that's nuts.
AZ, walk in, pick out gun, ammo and holster, prove identity with photo ID with current address, complete 4473, wait approximately 15 minutes while the telephone Brady check is conducted, if "proceed" pay the clerk, put on holster, walk outside, load weapon in safe manner, place in holster, openly or concealed, go on about your business...
Of course, I do reccomend test firing at a known distance range before carrying, but to each his/her own.

Alohachris, you gotta do all that to carry a firearm in chicago? You dont have to jump through that many hoops to become a US citizen. Thats ridiculous.

No, you don't do all that to *carry* a gun in Chicago. You do all that just to *own* a handgun in Chicago. There is no provision for mere citizens to *carry* a handgun in Chicago at all.

All that paperwork is just to have a handgun in your home.

I got into a bit of a situation with some guys on a thread about a guy wanting to own a machine gun. While I was at first mis-understood, their argument to me was that they didn't have to show a NEED, because they have the RIGHT. While I still disagree with the NEED to own a machine gun, I can and do understand their RIGHT to own one. While I can't see a need, IT AINT ABOUT NEEDS, IT'S ABOUT RIGHTS. If they want to shoot machine guns for fun they should have the right to do so. Just as I or anyone else should have the right to own any firearm I choose, and keep it anywhere I choose on my property or on my person. Who can define somebody else's NEED? But I think we can all define a God given RIGHT.

"We want to know who has weapons so that first responders can be aware of that information before they enter a home," said Police Supt. Jody Weis at a news conference.
Wait a minute. There are no guns in Chicago, Daley made them illegal.
If they are newly registered, the cops already know where they are.

Here they know exactly who has what firearms and where they are. Well, sort of. It is estimated that 3 out of 4 firearms (and their owners) are unregistered. The prices and hassles for legal ownership serve to encourage an active black market.

Quoting Webbj0219:

"... you gotta do all that to carry a firearm in chicago? You dont have to jump through that many hoops to become a US citizen. Thats ridiculous."

Here to own OR carry:

1. Theoretical and practical exams, both conducted by police, about $60 and a half-day
2. Armas y Explosivos ("AyE") form application with full personal information
3. Psychological exam, between $50 and $100 and two hours
4. OIJ (Costa Rica´s FBI) record check, no charge at present
4a. (if a foreign resident like me) US criminal record check, notarized through state dept and Costa Rican consulate in US to assure veracity, about $120 and five weeks
5. Sworn statement of need, a $50 attorney fee
5a. (if a foreign resident like me) Sworn statement declaring no criminal record or warrants in any country of residence for prior 10 years, another $50 attorney fee
6. Fingerprinting at the only Armas y Explosivos office in the country, allow the time for travel to/from and at least three hours for waiting in line (line begins forming at 3:30 am for 8:30 opening time)
7. Official document stamps from government and legal offices, not expensive or hard to get at present
8. Copies of all documents, some certified
9. Select and pay (from 1.5x to 2x US price) for your weapon of choice through a certified dealership. You will find a very limited selection.

Then:

Allow from one to two weeks for an officer from AyE to visit your certified dealer and pre-inspect your collection of documents, verify the firearm was legally imported, and issue a case number. Another "estimated four weeks" is then required for your case to be reviewed and, hopefully, approved by AyE. The estimate is a bit optimistic - I have been waiting six weeks since case number received and have another to go. Two people I know who have done an individual transaction (not through a dealer) have been waiting over four months now.

Penalty for

possession of unregistered weapon (in your house, e.g): 3 months - 1 year prison
carrying your registered weapon with no permit: 3 months - 1 year prison
carrying your registered weapon with your permit expired: 3 months community service
carrying a legally registered weapon not matching that specified on your valid permit: 3 months community service
carrying an unregistered weapon and without permit: 1-3 years prison

Any of the above offenses (and many more besides) will cancel your ability to ever obtain a CCW, and may cancel your ability to legally own any firearm. Ownership is a privilege here, not a right.

Roswell Kid, I was thinking about all the hoops one would have to jump through in order to become an American citizen, say from Mexico. The Chicago registration reminded me of this. I have a friend at work that is married to a Mexican woman, he was complaining about all the hoops she had to jump through to get citizenship. They asked her to do everything short of rolling over, begging and giving them her paw to get in. The government just wants to make sure you know who your daddy is before they let you in. My friend was getting a lil miffed they way they were treating his wife. Well this chicago thing is almost as bad.

hmm...what if i just casually waltz into the middle of Grand Central Station in NY, whip out my framing hammer, and proceed to bash the brains in of so many passers-by in the crowd...

...they gonna start making people register Framing hammers? ball-peen hammers? sledges?
is there gonna be a compensated confiscation of screw drivers and tape measures?
will nail guns be limited to 10 nail capacity?

when will these idiots not understand that ANYTHING can be used as a weapon?!

and when will the law abiding masses stop being punished for the transgressions of the minority?

Yeah, Marlin. Marlin produced derringers and revolvers from 1870-1899. I've never seen one, but I hear they are sought after by all the bangers.

Charter Arms can run a new ad. "Hey, we're not on the Chicago list of unsafe guns!"
