I have read the same regarding American forces, the Chauchat simply could not take the conversion to .30-06 in a reliable fashion but apparently did okay for walking fire support using the Lebel cartridge for the French.In reading about WWI I remember the Chauchat being mentioned but never in a positive way.
Well to be honest it the kind of the norm in topsy-turvy-never-say-die world I live in. Some of the things that you see there are unreal..VERY interesting... You should consider yourself lucky to have seen one in the wild !!
