What caliber for lion?

Have y'all seen the Youtube video of the German fellow who gets out of his car in South Africa, right in front of his family, and walks up to a pride of lions to take a video of them. A female jumped him from behind and the rest started making him lunch. No, not making lunch for him. He WAS lunch. For those with weak stomachs, don't watch that particular video. I often work near where he was killed and I had nightmares for days after seeing the video.

That is what happens when you are both stupid, and you go into dangerous situations with worthless people that won't back you up.
Keep that in mind if you have friends that might find it more fascinating to watch you be eaten and hesitate to put themselves in danger.

I would have driven right into the lions with the vehicle, slammed the door into the lion several times and stabbed at it with something in the car, crowbar or something. Then pulled him into the vehicle.
The people he was with just do a little yelling and sit in the vehicles.

They had several thousand pound metalic monsters tougher than any lion and they sat there and watched the lions eat him.

Bunch of pansies he was with.

im pretty sure i would have messed myself. dont judge reactions unless you've been in that situation before. but i do agree, they should have done SOMETHING. what happened to the war-like germans we all knew and loved?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you folks with iron clad suggestions about what does and does not work for African lions have actually seen an African lion in the wild, let alone used your suggested caliber on one?

I mean, I'm all for killing time imagining what we'd do and use, but I dunno about the folks that seem so emotionally invested in their choices -- unless, of course, they've "been there done that".

They are a dangerous animal, and even wounded they can be determined to fight back.
However they are also a thin skinned animal.
Poachers slaughter lions that causes problems with AK47s. It might not be a good lion caliber, but that is why they deliver multiple rounds in an unsportsmanlike fashion.

Ideal hunting calibers are designed to kill in one shot, and be as humane as possible. Many less than ideal calibers can be effective as well, especialy when lead is delivered in bulk.
In fact poachers often kill elephants with AK47s. They deliver as many shots as it takes and keep shooting. Then they go cut out its tusks and leave it to rot.
But they killed it with a round no sane person would hunt an elephant with.
Killing something and hunting are very different things.

"The Perfect Shot" by Kevin "Doctari" Robertson suggests at least a 250 grain bullet at 2200 fps but goes on to say "The venerable .375 H&H must be one of the best lion calibers when loaded with the right bullets.", all the way up to "The various .458 cartridges ....(describes loads)......will also be most effective on lion.". Pretty hard to argue with that.

4 inch pocket knife lets keep it even

Except that one lion brought 10 4" pocket knives as well as enough sharp teeth and powerful muscles to whack a rhino....

So, I am guessing that a 4" pocket knife in no way makes it "even".

I have no idea what my reaction to a real live lion face to face would do, but if I had an AK, I would unload it at the lion....If I happened to have a Dillon Aero, ditto...unload on the lion.... If I had a B-52 bomber... unload on lion...

The consistent theme is, no matter what I happen to be carrying, the lion gets all the bullets, or as many as my shaking body can get into him.

Now, if I happen to be carrying my 9mm, then that is what he gets. All I really know, is if I survived an encounter with a lion, my shorts would need changing....

Now, this is assuming im not on a wild lion hunt in Africa. If I am, then my weapon of choice is an RPG with a New York Reload.

I'm going to go with volume of fire. First up would be my Garand with plenty of enbloc clips full of 30.06 handy. Realistically and without adding anything to my current collection, thats what I'd be using. Next up would likey be the Mosin, due to the low rate of fire as compared with the M1. Las

A .308 would suffice, but I'd use a 30-06.
You guys win the prize-As a kid i read everything about hunting Africa and the Professional hunters said the 06 as good for lion!
If ya shoot him in the wrong place with a BMG -50 hes gona get as shure as if ya miss with an 06.
For the record I saw a Rodisian Game warden dispatch an elephant with 1 shot from an FAL --Sukka went to the ground Like a ton of bricks !

Been there, done that, got THAT T shirt. My buddy hit a lion just below the right eye with a .375 H&H. Lion spin around and started roaring and coming our way. Then the surrounding area sounded like a WWII infantry charge. Hit him 3 more times before he ran out of growl.

I've got a photo of the lion on a Cape Buffalo kill just before we tried to turn him into a rug. Wish i knew how to upload. I've also got a photo of what happens to a Cape Buffalo when a 458 Lott taps him.

Lion killed by pistol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II8lhnCKMrA&NR=1

Here is a video of a lion being killed by a pistol. Very graphic and not for everybody. The lion is in the process of eating a man when it gets shot. It looks like after the first shot it simply tries to pull the man under a bench or table. The lion is out of the fight much faster than I would have expected.

The guys friend is reaching through the bars of the cage and grasping the lion's mane to keep it from killing his buddy. Then he opens the door and leaps in to pull the lion's body away from his friend the moment it fell over. It doesn't appear to be dead yet. That's a good friend.

Can anybody identify the pistol?

Geez. I was pretty surprised when I saw the pistol. It looked like a 32 or a 38. Made short work of that lion nonetheless with three shots. But did he miss with the first shot or what? It looks like it hit something a few feet to left.

still cant beat the 2,000 grain copper solid. 2,000 grains=0.25 pounds.
0.286 lbs. 7000 grains in a pound.

So you want to give it a quarter pounder? Anyone wanna add cheese to that?
