What do you use for your home defense ?

Whatever I carried that day is my home defense. My wife keeps her .357 at the ready although she said last night that she would like to have a shotgun for home defense. :)

a shotgun and a back-up pistol

are the best.
The sound of the 12 gauge being racked is enough to make an intruder crap-his-pants.Then a pistiol, just a simple revoler is all you need. This tucked in your jammies or underwear.
Like my O.P. said, Remington 870 12 gauge pump,with my pet Sig P220 .45.
Ready,willing,and able ! :fire:

Lets Roll !

clipse, that's some mighty pretty wood on that 870. Is that stock?

For me, I keep the G19 handy pretty much wherever. I need to get my own 870 tried and practiced; I've never even fired it.

I would use my wife as home defense. If someone broke in I would send her out to nag him to death.

First line is a pair of Mastiff mixes...

and then it depends where I am at home. I hate to say it, but the pups are sacrificial. If a real BG wants in, they will shoot the dogs. By then I will be ready.

If you got the rug dirty, my wife would rip you to shreds.

Anyway, typical me - first available is a Glock and a Surefire. If we do hunker down in the designated safe room, an AR-15 with lights and loaded with TAP.

I don't buy the 'shotgun' cliche, boring. Rack, Rack, Rack - you still here - oops - I unloaded by gun.

Why do folks perpetuate the myth that the sound of a shotun slide being worked is somehow going to make an intruder leave? If anything, it just gives away your location as well as announce, "Hey, I have a shotgun". If this were true, why not just dub in some audio of a shotgun being racked and have it set to go off when the alarms are set or something, "Shuck-SHUCK, Shuck-SHUCK, Shuck-SHUCK..."
I mean sure, alot of folks here think a shotgun is the end all for home defense, but what happens if your intruder is armed, and what is to stop them from just opening up on your location with whatever firearm they brought? Even a lowely .22 or .32 will penetrate interior wallboards with enough energy left to be lethal...and since you have revealed your location, they know the general direction of you, and they may just start blazing away inside your house as they retreat in fear:rolleyes:
Also, why do alot of folks insist on arming themselves at a disadvantage? Why choose a handgun as a primary means of home defense? Handguns are less capable of incapacating an intruder than a rifle, or a shotgun, and offer no advantages to a rifle. This is not a claim, but a fact, handguns are lousy at doing the jobs compared to a rifle/carbine. Check out the box o truth website to see how different calibers of firearms stack up for penetration test of different materials: clothing, drywall, car doors, etc. Very informative.

Before you all say, well MHBushmaster, I can move around my house and clear rooms better with a pistol than a rifle...Folks, that is where a carbine comes in, a 16" AR or AK extends out only a few inches beyond the distance in front of you where your pistol is extended out from your body. Try it if you don't believe me. Also, good luck wrestling a carbine from someone with their finger on the trigger with two hands on the rifle = gunshot wounds/lead poisoning for the person grabbing onto the rifle....where as a handgun with any type pistol grip/stance does not achieve the same amount of rentention as a carbine...None of this is my research, I cannot claim credit for this info, the good folks at gunsite, blackwater among others and your tax dollars in the DOD have made these determinations and train accordingly. And if you are a .223 hater/mousegun believer, think then of a .30 carbine such as a mini-30 or an AK in 7.62x39 or a FAL para in 7.62x51.
My choice is a Bushmaster or RRA (depends on which is out for HD at the time) 16" carbine loaded with 55 GR XM-193, 30 rounds on tap with a Surefire flashlight to illuminate in front of me...I keep a shotgun as a backup to my carbine because I have a healthy dose of being over-prepared.

I am not trying to flame folks, just trying to understand why so many choose a "tool" that is inherently not the best for the task at hand (home defense).
And if you don't have access to a carbine and only a pistol or shotgun, then that makes sense, this is for folks who have the tools that I am asking my questions to...
Flame suite on.

dub in some audio of a shotgun being racked and have it set to go off when the alarms are set or something, "Shuck-SHUCK, Shuck-SHUCK, Shuck-SHUCK..."
I would just like to say, this is an awesome idea... LMAO!

I personally use all my guns for HD. Saiga 12, Wasr-10, AR-15 and an XD .45 all strewn about my house, fully loaded with extra mags hidden close by.

However, I do see one huge downside with the rifles, and that is over-penetration. I don't want to shoot through 6 walls, a person and then a brick wall. I'm happy to just stop the bad guy, maybe even penetrate 1 wall, but I know for damn sure that if someone is coming through my side door, I better not break out the AK, because there is a house with a newborn right next door. Basically, I'd rather not be responsible for the death of any innocent bystanders because my bullet went too far, that's not exactly protecting yourself.

2) Wife with bad attitude

If the intruder gets past her, Ill shoot him just to put him out of his misery.

YES! Overpenetration is an issue, but you must prioritize your response:
Do you risk not doing enough to stop an attacker so you don't risk hurting someone else downrange, or do you plan for the one 1 problem that is for sure, making sure you put lead on target to ensure you and your families safety, and then concern yourself about the rest of the world. Sounds caustic and maybe reckless to some, but its how it has to be done. The only way to not overpenetrate your attacker is to use a low penetrating load, alas which will not reliably incapactitate your attacker which defeats the purpose of you actually fighting back in the first place.
So you have to choose: pissoff the drugged-up attacker with a fleshwound or risk a possible over-penetration to reach vital organs and the CNS to stop the attack immediately and then take steps to reduce overpenetration: like learn the lane of fire you are mostly likely to use and see what really is downrange, create backstops to stop errant rounds, use a load that penetrates less but still reaches to where it needs to stop the bad guy with proper shot placement. Thus I use 55 grain, XM-193 spec ammo. It fragments like crazy in the ranges I will be utilizing it in my home and actually penetrates less then buckshot, slugs, or pistol ammo in wall boards found in most homes.
Read the box of truth, google it, you will find a wealth of knowledge there relating to ammo penetration tests in realistic environmnets using realistic stuff that you and I as Joe and Jane Q. Citizen have access to.
Bottom line, you have to be willing to overpenetrate to stop the attacker. Frangible ammo, birdshot, etc just do not cut it for stopping a determined attacker. Science supports this. In order to reache the vital organs and Central Nervous System, you need rounds that have the energy to get there. You can also take steps to avoid OVER KILL OVER PENETRATION, as in don't use a 4 bore or even a 2 bore rifle to stop an intruder, if you don't know what a 4 bore is, google it baby! 55grain and up .223 ammo will is devasting at reaching the CNS of an attacker with less over penetration.

all depends, whats broken down and being cleaned, whos around{IE do I have guest around and are they safe around firearms??}

Its usally I leave out/have handy a one of my long guns and have pistol handy in a drawer or under a cushion ect ect for checking the door at night stuff like that.

#1. Beretta 92FS, loaded with M882 ball, 15 in the mag, 2nd mag loaded next to it, optimized with Crimson Trace Grips - zero'd to 12 yards and a trigger job.

If 9mm ain't stopping the threat, we get #2

#2. RRA Tacticial Entry, 30 round mag, filled 25 deep with M885 SS109 AP, optimized with a surefire, 3pt sling and broom stick.

If #1 & 2 don't do the job there is usally 2-5 loaded .45acp mags with 230gr... Grandpa said that a .45 would take out a 200lb man with one shot... but I don't feel like turning my .45's over to the Police for balistics or Dropping them on the ground when the LEO arrive.

Key to all of this is to have a "PLAN"; Get Primary weapon, Arm Wife, Determine threat, Dial 9-1-1, remove threat, inform LEO... work on angles of fire, avenues of approch, determine which walls over penetration isn't an option.

GLOCK 21 / & Remi 870

My dog will only hold the door open, and show the burgler where 'DAD' keep's the good stuff at. So I depend on a 'Home Security System'. = 'GLOCK 21 / .45 acp, and a Remington 870 Express loaded w/ 3 inch #4 Buck shot. The # 4 buck shot is about the size of a pencil eraser, now count about a dozen of those pellets coming at you, 'no place to hide' = It's going to hurt !!!

Rack the slide, and they will hide !!

Oh, that sign . . .

Does it count if I have a sign in the yard that reads:

Warning: Intruders must
wear protective clothing
and headgear; hearing
protection advised.

paranoid?

I think I am ok... really I got a bat old school wood, carpenters hammer and my mk3 22/45 40 gr solids.
I must be better off than I previously thought.
And I should sleep well tonight knowing they are after you guys and not me!
Remember paranoia is a drug, the more you have the more you need.
