I've been overly concerned with the weight of my "special" rifle, or battle rifle if better named. Naturally without debating the best choice of rifles, I really would like to hear what my fellow members consider a reasonable weight. :scrutiny:
My AR15 weighs 7.5lbs and feels light compared to the "special" rifle that I prepared for "snatch & run" emergency (which will probably never happen) ;)
With scope, sling, bipod mount, empty magazine, I'm hitting 10lbs and beginning to think the 5.56 AR may be the best choice.
Again WEIGHT is what I'm asking about not rifle choice

My defensive rifle/carbine is a plain jane A2 16” weighing in at around 7lbs. Very comfortable with it, so shooting quickly off weld at close range is no problem. Batteries not required. If needed, I feel I could protect my family and/or take game with it.

I feel (maybe wrongly) that the 5.56 may not be well suited for harvesting meat. Otherwise that wonderful lightweight configuration would be unbeatable (and maybe is)

It’s not ideal, but if the situation warranted, I’d try to make the most out of it. I've taken deer with a similar rifle (w/ optics) loaded w/ 70gr speer semi-pointed soft points. As far as battle goes, it does fair battling armodillos (but makes a ton of noise).

yes those armadillos can be tough LOL..

10 pounds is only 2.5 more than my AR but GOSH that feels like a bunch while walking or offhand shooting

I have a Bushmaster super light carbine, it weighs in under 6lbs empty. The reason I got it was because it is light! It is completely stock, no optics etc. The best feature of the AR-15 is, (IMHO) its light weight, and for my purpose for the rifle I want to keep it light.

I think the Garand i have weighs 9.5 lbs. Plus 8 rds loaded, it should be around 10 lbs. Not light by any standard but thats the way it is.

.....i dont have just one rifle for anything LOL. Id call my mini closest to it, tho 8.5lbs loaded.

thanks fellas..
the only reason I didn't mention the rifle in the OP is because I really wanted your opinions on the weight of the rifle, not the model or brand.
It seems like the lightweight issue depends upon compromise of caliber. The 5.56 platforms are nice & light, the larger caliber choice has a downside of weight.
The above posted exception seems to be the 30-30 that only weighs 7 pounds.
Thanks also to 6x6pinz for the 28 pound "snatch & stay" ..enjoyed that post
The rifle causing me to rethink choice is a AR10 20"heavy barrel. Shoots sub moa with 20rds available, good meat harvester if need be, but weighs 10 pounds with scope, magazine & sling

I think I got ya'll beat. Unloaded mine is 12 pounds. AR with 37mm and beta C mag. Oops. I thought we were going for the heaviest. :]

For a true battle rifle, +1 to Nathan & Red Tornado's Garand.

If we're talking more along the lines of an assualt rifle, then around 8lbs depending on which AK I'm taking.

I guess I must really like my long stroke pistons.

This weighs 8.2lbs unloaded. May be a little heavy for others, but I love it.
