What Gun Did You Really Want . . . Before You Didn't

ARs. I got caught up in the gun ban back in the early 90s and ended up with 3 of them. I shot them some and they were really fun but not inexpensive to shoot. If I had unlimited ammo money, I would have kept one. Ended up selling them all (at a pretty good profit) just because I had no real use for them. I am looking hard at those S&W M&P 22s though. I can afford to shoot that one.

I foolishly passed on a second generation Colt SAA in 38 Special in 5 1/2" anib and priced quite right. I did not know, at the time, that they were only chambered in 38 Special for the first 3 years of production. $2000.00 seemed too much at the time, I have berated and belittled myself ever since, dumb, stupid and foolish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AK's , they are fine weapons, and I've had 5-6 of them over the years, but they always get sold. I play with one for a few range trips, and go back to my AR. I won't buy another one, nice to know how to use one though, there are a bunch of them out there.

Magpul Masada, then Bushmaster/Remington ACR.

Looked really good on paper, then I spent a lot of time getting to know the AR platform (~10K rounds in a 6 month period) and decided I liked the old AR well enough, and the ACR didn't really do anything all that much better, did some things worse, and cost waaaaaay too much.

Springfield XD.

Again, looks great on paper, and it really is a good gun, I even bought one, decided I didn't really like it, and traded it away. I have shot pretty much every size and shape they come in, and they really are great guns, but I found I much prefer 1911s for range and carry uses. The XD really fits in the role of a combat handgun better than a daily carry piece, and I would love to see the M9 replaced with something along the lines of the XD45.

Been there, and done that~! My Browning Hi-Power 9mm. After owning a
BHP "Practical" model a few years ago, I thought I had too have a blued
model with adjustable sights~! Back in late '09, a pristine one became
available. Even purchased 3 extra Mec-Gar magazines for it; that cost me
another $65.00. No box or doc's; but a really nice piece. Guess what~?
It still sits in my RSC, unfired by me at the present time. Maybe one of
these days, I will get a'round to it~? :uhoh:  ;)

Kel-tec sub 2000, In love till I shot it, no gun should jam 7 out of 50 rounds. With 3 different kinds of ammo...

10mm Glock 20.

Was so excited to have the big bad 10mm. Entirely impractical, couldn't control it, and ammo was much to rare and expensive.

I lusted after Henry's Golden Boy until I found that the "brass" receiver was actually an easily scratched coating. Handling one was a major disappointment, too.

I had my eye on Auto Ordnance's new M-1 carbines. When I handled a couple, they felt like the stocks were made of balsa wood. Then, at another's prompting, I researched them. Horrible, horrible reviews from actual purchasers, about 85 out of 100. :barf:

I decided against both of them and now I'm saving my money for my "grail gun"--a 1970's Mauser mfd Interarms imported SS American Eagle Luger w/6" bbl. I actually had my hands on one once, but no money. :cuss:

C'est la vie...

Glock 27. Not a big enough difference from a G23/19 to make a difference in how it carries. I did run it in a couple IDPA matches though.

Ruger LCR. Shooting one affirmed my belief in the full-size automatic. Snubbies just ain't my cup of tea.

Pretty much any kind of semi auto UZI or AK.

Both are iconic ... and cool looking

Over the last 30 or so years I've bought at least 15 AK's and they just sit in the safe. When I got an itch for something else they were the first to go ... now I've got a straight stock, side-folder, under-folder and pistol, all built from Hungarian kits and I'm just going to keep them, if for no other reason to keep me from buying another AK again!

Same goes with UZI's ... I've owned Chinese, IMI's and Vectors. But as with AK's ... I get that immediate gratification when I buy them but it just doesn't stay with me in these guns.

I like the 7.62x39 ... I've got an AR and a SiG in that caliber and they are great guns and I enjoy them ... maybe its just the lack of accuracy

Likewise with the 9mm ... I like the round and I've got an sbr'd MP5 clone and a couple other carbines in 9mm but the UZI is just heavy and clunky in comparison

The great thing about both of these types of guns is ... I've never lost money on them when I went to sell or trade :)

That one's easy. S&W 4506. I wanted one since I first handled one in the 80s.

One turned up at my LGS earlier this year & I was on it. Handling it I reallized the plastic grips were cheesey and the trigger was absolutely gawdawful.
I had the same experience with a S&W 5906. Love their revolvers but can't stand S&W semi-autos.

If I get another DA .45ACP it'll probly be a SIG 220.
I don't really like DA semi-autos but the 220 really is a great gun.

SAA clone in polished stainless with white something grips. Absolutely gorgeous, and generates multiple [STRIKE]orgasms...[/STRIKE] oooohhhs and aaaaahhhs wherever it goes, but hard for me to reach the hammer with a bunged-up thumb without shifting my hand around. I think the Bisley style might work better, with its lower hammer spur. Personal problem, here, though, not the gun's fault.

PF-9. Kick doesn't bother me, but unreliable feeding. It's starting to operate right, but only after 300 rounds. I firmly believe that duty and field guns should not require break-in periods. I call it my 2-shot Derringer with a compartment for extra cartridges because it consistently misfeeds the third round. Yeah, I tried all kinds of ammo in it. Sux. Yeah, I sent it back for a factory fluff and furbish. Still sux.

AR, as represented by my M4gery. An ergonomic and ballistic disaster. Got one just to see what all the AR fuss was about and for familiarization. Still don't see what all the AR fuss is about. The form and feel of long arms has developed naturally over centuries and then comes this monstrosity. Yeah, it's modular, but why? Every time I pan the thing, some DI-type, whose head has been riddled with the military establishment's propaganda that it's the greatest thing since they started to smoke bacon, gets all defensive about it. It's the classic "The Emperor has no clothes" type of situation. Sux.

I haven't ever owned a Glock and I'd only shot one once in the distant past. For the last few months I've been drooling over a G19. It seemed like the perfect compromise of weight, size, capacity, power etc. Great parts availability and so on and so forth.

Then I rented one the other night (Gen 4). Everything about just *felt* wrong. Grip, trigger, controls. No thanks. I'll be sticking with my XD 9 SC. Yes, it's bulkier in some ways, has a higher bore axis, and holds fewer rounds, but it feels right in my hand.

Colt Cobra, mainly because I thought the name was so cool. Fortunately, I handled one BEFORE I purchased, realized I don't like aluminum frames. Eventually bought a Detective Special, now THAT I like.

Springfield XD. Such a pretty gun, but I hate the way it feels in my hand.

I would still buy one if I had money to blow though.

After I first got my CHL, my instructor convinced me that I really wanted a j-frame. After I had owned, fired, and carried a half dozen of them, I realized that I was right and he was wrong. I do not own one these days. From time to time, I still think I want one. I manage to resist that impulse.

At a certain point, I became convinced that Kel-Tec was a viable carry handgun. After owning four of them, and going through multiple nightmare scenarios, I am forever cured of that belief.
