What gun do you use for Home defense??

EAA Windicator .357 loaded with .38+P's (slightly less noisy) and a 6D maglight.

All of my favorite firearms remain locked up. The theory being (depending on how the cops are feeling) that they'll only confiscate firearms that could have been used.... I've heard horror stories about never getting guns back from the cops.. so if my $200 windicator never came back..I wouldn't cry too much...

Oh, and it's a good little pistol too.

Wilson Tac Elite with 230gr Rem. Golden Sabers and a Surefire M3 on the nightstand.
I don't adhere to the thought process in a previous post. Yes, if a gun is used in a shooting, it will likely be confiscated, maybe permanently. But I look at it this way:
1) The odds of being involved in a shooting are relatively small.
2) If I am involved in a shooting, a confiscated gun may be the least of my problems. And any gun is replaceable.
3) Keeping my best guns locked in a safe while I use/carry only my cheap guns, means that I'm depriving myself of using the guns I like best. Life's too short for that, in my opinion. I like to carry/use the very best I have. That's what I bought them for.

Kimber Ultra Carry
S&W 649
Beretta 950
If I really feel a threat-Remington 870.

I rotate the following home defense guns on a quarterly basis:

Glock 21

Glock 34 or 35

GP100 .357 magnum

Beretta 92FS

You presumed that I don't like the Windicator.. It's a fine pistol, and I've outshot CDP class folks in IDPA with it, It's plenty of firepower for house defense and totally reliable with .38+P's.

Somehow, somewhere..people got the idea that the more expensive the gun, the better it is..

Remington 870 with 7 1/2 shot
S&W 686 with 4 blue Glasers and 2 158 Gr LSWC
SA Loaded Stainless with 200 Gr Gold Dots

I don't have anything against using the 'best gun' and my SA Loaded Stainless is the last gun I'd want to lose. Good guns need not be expensive. I have a barely $100 Makarov that has been completely reliable, I have a Taurus PT99 that I'm put clost to 20,000 rounds through with zero failures that was less than $300. I had a Rossi 971 (?) 357 revolver that I had no problems with that was just over $200. But at the same time, I'd feel compelled to use my best gun to defend my house.

We don't have children, but I've taken other people's children into consideration here. (You just never know.) Anyway, I don't believe a child could get to a firearm in my house, but on the other hand, I don't believe a "BG" could get between me and one of my firearms. I even have a couple stashed in the basement. So, I don't have one "particular" gun that's dedicated to home protection. However, those Mossburg pistol-grip shotguns are on sale everywhere now. I'm thinking I need one because I don't HAVE one. (Big reason, huh? :) )

I think maybe you guys misunderstood the statement. BrainDead0 said he keeps ALL his favorite guns locked up... because if you are involved in a shooting, when the police come, they very well may search your house, and since a crime has been committed on the scene, they won't need a warrant.

They'll look behind doors, in closets and drawers, under pillows and mattresses, etc. Anywhere they find a firearm, they may confiscate it. It's not an issue of losing just the EAA, but if you have 3 or 4 pistols exposed, you could quite possibly have 3 or 4 pistols taken away. Sometimes, they don't come back.

To answer KC's question, my HD is an HK USP45 with attached UTL and a spare mag, all loaded with 230gr Golden Sabres. It's locked up tight in a www.handgunsafe.com single pistol safe mounted, bolted, and cabled to anything and everything I could find next to and including the bed.

I have a nearly identical safe setup on the other side of the bed for my wife on the times I have to work at night for a stage move to production. It's got a Walther P99, spare mag, and Streamlight Scorpion in it. Hers carries 135grain Federal Personal Defense ammo at the moment.

Everything else is locked up in the big safe.

Exactly, it makes no sense allowing everything to be confiscated. Have as much available as you feel you need..

Besides, I'm an organizational freak..I must know where everything is at all times.. A safe just makes the decision where to put them all the easier.

I do think, one of these days.. that a shotgun would be nice to add to the home defense collection. Problem is the wife hates shooting 12ga, so I'd probably end up with a 16... OTOH.. that outta down a BG pretty easy as well.

The only gun not locked up would be a single shot 20 guage with a handfull of 00 buck shells.

The wrinkle dog would hold whomever by the nuts til the cops came............but if I needed anything else (doubtful), I'd grab the .30 Carbine and a loaded mag or two from the the safe.

Exactly... I've seen it on Cops many times. Some guy gets arrested in his home for something COMPLETELY unrelated to firearms, but they still go around the house and find hunting rifles, shotguns, .22's, etc, and take them out to their cruiser for "safe disposal".

My neighbor across the street allowed his 30 year old son to come live with him after the son was released from Prison last year (Felony DUI, not weapon related). The Parole officer came to the house, and saw a full gun cabinet. He told the Father he had 24 hours to remove all the guns from the house or the parole officer would have them confiscated. :uhoh:

Ammoman carries Federal low recoil ammo for the 12 Gauge that might help your wife out. Otherwise, I'd personally go for a 20 gauge, since the recoil is lighter, the shotguns available for it are usually smaller and a little lighter, 20ga is generally more available than 16 gauge, and from what a lot of guys right here on THR say, the 20 gauge is an excellent HD round.

Springfield Champion Model 1911-A1 with 3 mags..Rem 230 Gr Golden Sabre.

Tha should buy me enough time to get to the Serious Artillery...
Us Rifle Cal 30 M-1 popularly known as The Garand

Foghornl, you and I share similar approaches...

I keep a Kimber Custom nearby, with three mags loaded up with Winchester 230-grain JHPs.

Next in line is a SAR-1 with a couple of magazines ready-to-go.

Remington 870 filled with 6 rounds of Federal 3" magnum 00 buckshot (15 pellets), my Glock 17, which i will be picking up today, a scoped marlin model 60, and a Heritage .22 revolver. The shotgun is my "go-to" gun, but the rest are loaded and scattered around my room incase i need them.
