What Gun Just for the Pure Unadulterated Joy of It?

Gun for just the fun of it? In my case, it would likely be a 22 rifle or handgun; maybe a Marlin 39A since you probably have the 22 rifle (probably either bolt action or semi) covered or one of the AR-styled 22 rifles. I have some 41 mag revolvers which are mostly for the fun of it; Smith and Ruger.

A Ma Deuce mounted on the top of my SUV, and the entire back filled with ammo cans of .50 cal belts.

While we're at it, a turret installed in it.

And one of my buddies throwing trap so I can shoot at it with the .50.

:D

Guns that might fit the bill could be a Model 1897 riot gun, a 1911 or a full size S&W .357 revolver. What other guns might fit the bill?

None of your stated options will be cheap, yet you've received some excellent suggestions. I’m surprised that on has suggested the S&W M-27 the classic American handgun. Somewhat pricy now but they are not going to come down in price either.

A pristine, 1955 Winchester 94 in 32 special cal.

A pristine, pre-war Savage 99F in 300 Sav cal.

A pristine, pre-war Winchester 71 in 348 cal.

A pristine, pre-war Winchester model 70 in 375 H&H.

I've owned expensive ones and cheap ones of varying makes and models.

The two that stand out as being fun to shoot and dragging me to the range?

Easy, Marlin 60 (cheap fun) and Beretta 96 (no idea, just pure fun). My AR at first...but it faded slightly. If I take it out, the 60 is definitely in tow.

Just for fun? Ruger SuperBlackhawk .44 mag 5.5" barrel. Nothing brings a smile to my face like a single-action .44.

Ruger 10/22, I shoot mine at least 3 times a week.

Not much more American than a .22LR plinker.

I have my basic pistol, rifle and shotgun bases covered.

Suggestions please on moderately priced, used, American made guns that are simply a joy to own and shoot.

In other words, I have all the working guns I need, and I would like a gun just for fun, but I am not going to spring $7,000 for the Winchester Model 21 trap gun that I'm lusting for.

Personally if I were you, I would holdout for the Model 21, (I really want a Parker VHE in 20 gauge ) as you'll never be happy with anything less, but with that said.

I think if it was me and didn't want to spend a gazillion dollars on ammo each time I went to the range (leaves out a Mini Gun:cuss:) I would seriously look at the Ruger 10/22 and especially the SR-22. With all the aftermarket gadgets that you can get, there is no end to the fun! :D

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Fortunately, I am not very picky and many of my toys fit into that category.

Current favorites: A Ruger Mk. 3 22 pistol with fixed sights and 6 inch barrel, a S&W 317 with 3 in barrel and adjustable sights, a Superblackhawk with 5.5 in barrel. In long guns, a 10/22 tactical target with Burris Fastfire II, a T/C encore with 20" 460 S&W, and a Ruger Frontier in 308.

However, these selections tend to rotate through the seasons.

Bottom line, as I have been building my collection over the years, I have tended to buy things that I think will be a joy. I have not been disappointed often.

When you find the "right" gun, it will speak to you when you pick it up and whisper "Please, please take me home."

HA. Haha. the M1919 Browning of Course Order yourself a kit and make it yourself as a project for weekends. Good times will be had by all.
