What guns have you wanted but just couldn't justify paying the price?

Hmm, it's a whole pile, really.
Military M-1 Carbines--just cannot justify $1300-1500 for beater Blue Sky imports in dubious condition
M1A/M-14 clones--even though the SAI versions are coming down in price, the reports about quality decreasing are discouraging. Two grand and up for good copies is more than I can justify.
Semi-auto BAR--too expensive for just too marginal a weapon. No arguing its historical significance, but, just not that good.
Johnson Automatic Rifle--back when they newly restored copies were all about, they looked nice, but, at $800 priced as much as two other US milsurps. Mostly a no-go.
Ditto the semi-auto M1A1 and M3 copies out there. Nice, but spendy on top of not looking the part.

Now, I do hae to agree on the Uzis out there. They've gotten some hard second (and third) looks; but, they just never quite justified the price. Which wound up being a stumbling block on getting a FAL or G3; just never enoyed shooting either of those enough to go down that particular rabbit hole.

Life, its own self.

What I have found is that when my appetite for a certain firearm is satisfied, time passes and then my lust begins for something else. I have plenty if nice guns, more than I certainly will ever need but I always find that I want another. I think it is fair to say that I have a gun addiction because I can truly rationalize any want or purchase. I am glad that my wife is here to pull the needle out of my arm.

I hear you. Unfortunately, I'm a closet gun buyer. I suspect my wife is a closet shoe/purse buyer (they multiply like rabbits). It evens out, I'm sure.

We want one but for one reason or another just can't justify its price tag even if we can afford it. I have two that come to mind right away for me.

  • Just about anything that is an AK / AKM clone. Want another 5.45 74 clone, but just cannot justify the price. Looked at some Russian AK parts kits, but at $700 - $900 just for a bunch of metal (no barrel or receiver), just seems ridiculous. And the WASR is still a $300 rifle to me (tops), not the $600-$700 it currently goes for.
  • PSL rifles - new ones now on the market for $2000? Seriously?
  • SVD / Tiger rifle - has always been above my price pain threshold, so this is nothing new
  • M1A / M-14 clones
  • Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm - I'm on the fence about caling this one a gun that I can't justify the price. At $1,200-$1,300 market it's a bit pricey, but Dan Wessons are fine pistols
  • Did I mention AK rifles? Jeez.

Always wanted a Freedom Arms 83 or 97. I'll probably never own one.

Also, I've wanted an AR10 in 308 (specifically the Ruger SR-762) but don't really need it as I already have two 308 rifles. This one I can see maybe getting one day.

There are a few. Any one of the 50 BMG's, but probably a Barrett. I just don't have a use for it or the $5 per shot cost. A high end 1911, like a Nighthawk or Gun Crafter. I don't shoot well enough to see the advantage over a Gold Cup but this might happen. Another custom varmint rifle using a custom action. This will probably happen too!

Went to the Fort Worth Gun Show today.
Saw a (new) Inland M-1 Carbine. Walk-away debit card price of $1009 (cash price $899 + 8.625% sales tax). Stock was the typical not-GI-walnut "walnut wood" action was gritty and awful, trigger mushy. Apologized to the deal for wasting his time and walked away; jut too much for too little. He offered to knock a chunk off the price, and I told him I couldn't justify cutting his margin that thin on an item with the track record they have. We shock hands and that was that.

Saw an SAI "loaded" M1A for only $1300, but it was 2017 production. Sigh.

Saw a 1943 Garand in barely "fair" condition; yeah, flat "no" at $2100.

Blue Sky import M-1 "Inland" Carbine (right at the Good/Fair line) for $1500; again, flat "no."

There are things I'd like to have, but, I want value for my money. I'm not stuck in the past, I know Carbines are never going to be $400 again; but, I'm not paying $1500 for a $750 Carbine just to have one.

My list is short compared to a lot of folks. I do however have a couple guns that I drool over and refuse to slip out the credit card.

Sphinx or TSO. Either direction you have an incredible CZ pattern gun, and either way you are paying WAY too much. I will buy a Witness Elite or Witness Limited in 10mm instead.

686 Competitor. Just a incredible looking gun, and it checks the boxes on everything I want a .357 to do. Just twice what I’m willing to pay for it. I will buy a nice .357, but unless I find a crazy deal on a competitor I’m out of that market.

Rossi Cyclops. Seriously who would have thunk a Rossi would make this list? The cyclops is another one of those incredible revolvers that checks the boxes of what I want in a .357, but for the money I could have a DW with a couple different barrels. I’m still looking for a cyclops though, it just might happen.

Savage Navy. Civil War era goodness and firearms design come together to create a lever action cap and ball revolver. Unique, weird, cool, collectible. That last part pretty well puts me out because they are just too expensive for me to jump on. Even a beat up and not functioning example is too expensive.

K “Masterpiece” guns. Sweet examples of the finest things you want in a S&W revolver, but again the fanboys and collectors market pushes prices to double or more what they should be. Oh well, the Taurus versions are nice enough.

"Just about everything Ron Spomer reviews."

Me, just about everything Tim at Military Arms Channel reviews.

I saw a Red Label set that had OU barrels in .375 H&H and the second set was 20 gauge 3”.

That was in the 3,500.00 range....well out of my price zone....but man did it look nice.

My I can't afford it, and don't want to spend the money gun was a Marlin Ballard #4 1/2 A-1 Mid Range rifle. Just got weak in the knees seeing them, but since they haven't been made since the 1880's the prices run in the $7k and up range!
The second was a similar #7 A-1 Long Range version, with similar pricing, and just as hard to find. I own a plain #7 that's not the factory engraved version, but the engraved guns are what I lust for.
But in August I was set up at our local collector gun show and the gentleman next to me had a #4 1/2 A-1 for sale! Still too spendy, but after 2 days of talking he agreed to do a trade for three guns I was selling, and toss me some cash to boot.
This is the #4 1/2 A-1 that fulfilled half of my dream. Manufactured in 1876, and chambered in .40-70 Ballard caliber:

So now the holy grail I lust for is that #7 A-1 Long Range.

That would be a FN-P90 (or PS 90),,,
I have rented a full-auto version twice now,,,
One of the most fun $200.00 bills I've ever spent.

It's the one gun I would want if I needed to be well armed and could only have one gun.

Whereas I think the CZ TS is probably the best value in guns period. I will absolutely outperform my guns that cost 2 - 3 times its asking price.

Here's my current list...

1. CZ 50 and 70 (this just means I haven't gotten them yet. they are on the list, because I haven't gotten them YET, I don't think they are overpriced).
2. Every other cold war era Soviet pistol (except the CZ82, already got that one...)
3. Sarsilmaz entire (okay, not quite, particularly a G2C) lineup... They are a pretty interesting manufacturer. I hope they make it okay. I have their K2-.45, which is kinda like a double stack .45 version of a CZ75 that takes the Para Ordinance P-14 magazines. Sorta...
4. Garand. Sadly I probably never will get one of these... I would really like to make my own .223 version with en-blocs and everything, but I would really need an original to study it really thoroughly. It'd take me about five years to figure it all out, and after that another five years to figure out miniature en-blocs, but I think that would be REALLY cool...
5. An EAA 10mm. Again, just haven't had one come along.
6. A bunch of revolvers... I've got S&Ws on the list, Rugers, even Taurus... you know how that goes...

As far as production firearms go, these are high on my want-but-will-probably-not-own list:
  • Daniel Defense ISR
  • Freedom Arms Model 83
  • Dan Wesson Bruin
There are some fine custom rifle builders who make stuff well beyond my price range as well.
