They're fun range guns. I use my sporter as a truck/knock about rifle. It's very capable on hogs with the 154 Wolf soft point. That load is 2.5" 100 yards accurate which is about as good as my 2 SKSs get. They're norincos. i dressed one up tacticool and one for to actually be useful for something other than impressing the mall ninjas, as if an SKS of any kind could impress one.

I gave 75 for the rifle before the add ons and 115 for the paratrooper carbine. I wouldn't spend current prices on an SKS. Can get a real rifle for what they run now days.

I took the pic of the rifle when I had the scope and night light on it. I was using it for hog hunting. I took the scope off, though, makes a better knock about gun/truck gun that way. I have a 7 mag I'm going to set the light up on. I'm not using it for anything else and the scope is awesome on that thing.

killchain put it in an excellent nutshell.

The value can not be surpassed.
I can afford an M1A, but why spend so much on a rifle, when dependable plinking fun (or self-defense) and ammo at .25/round can be found for so much less? You can order a rear aperture sight for $45.

Savage .22, Mini 30, Nor. SKS, Enfield #4/5, Yugo Mauser.

SKS is used as a range gun (for fun), short-range hunting rifle, ban-busting semi-auto, and all-around handy rifle.

Even though most models in the USA are breaking the $300 mark, they're still and inexpensive alternative to similar-purpose rifles (Mini-30 for example). Note that I said similar-purpose, not similar rifle. A Mini-30 and an SKS have about as much in common functionally as a BMW M5 and a Volkswagen Rabbit.

It is an historically interesting artifact from the evolution of semi automatic service weapons.

They also go bang! :D

When I first started shooting in the CT. Highpower League my first gun was a $69.00 Norinco SKS (this is back in 1989). Which I shot Norinco 7.62 x 39 steel case ammo. I could easily shoot a 352 out of 400 with that gun. If you get the trigger worked on and decent ammo you can do quite well.

Its an interesting historical footnot. Kind of like an assualt rifle but not quite, developed around the same time as the STG series.

I bought 3 Russians and 1 Norinco Paratrooper (I doubt a paratrooper ever used one, just a name for the SKS with the short barrel.) Gave 1 Russian with a nice laminated stock to my son. Shot the others and eventually sold the Ruskies for about twice what I paid. Kept and still have the Norinco. Of the 4 the Norinco was, to me, the best of the lot. Nice brush gun for coyotes and other varmits at 50 to 100 yds.

you can hunt white tail or mule deer, hogs and other smaller creatures, yes good brash gun just like 30-30 but semiautomatic...

zombies

the stock has enough wood to make a fire for the night

with 2 SKS's you have enough wood to make a canoe

i have one where i bring in the mail--the pointy thing is a great letter opener

and lastly---shoot things with

The spiky thing is good for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows.

The short pull on the stock makes it a great trainer for kids that want to shoot a semi-auto.

It DOES NOT fit the definition of assault rifle (at least in the original configuration) (fixed magazine holding ten rounds).

If you ever were shot by one, I bet you'd figure it out real fast!!

they're good for anything you'd hunt with 7.62x39. Also good plinkers, good curio/relic pieces, tent poles, firewood, spears, boat oars, etc. They can also make good cheap grenade launchers if you somehow acquire the rifle-mounted grenades.

I have a Russian Tula SKS, and just picked up my new 59/66 Yugo earlier today. Great guns.
