London, 1961. I was in the Navy, our boat stopped by England on our way to a Northern Run.
We'd walk into a pub and before we could say anything, a beer would be put in front of us and the landlord would say "On the house, mates.". And before we could finish it, another round would appear bought by somebody else.
There were times being in uniform was nice and this was one of them. Also, we did the tourist bit and whenever we'd go to pay an admission charge, we'd be waived through.
People in the street would say "Hello" and old women would pull the collar on our jumpers (they believed it was good luck).
I'm sitting here with a small smile on my face just remembering other ...Ummmm .... "things that happened".
