Let me start off by saying that I currently own a Ruger MKII, a Ruger LCR .38, a Glock 19 and 23, a SA XD .40, a Hi-Point JHP .45 and C9. I've recently lost a bunch of weight and the wife is buying me a new gun to celebrate me losing about 70 pounds. I really don't know what I wanna get, any suggestions? I'm looking in the $500-$600 range, don't care if it's semi-auto or revolver. Heck, I'm game for some sort of carbine or something, I don't have any rifles yet.....:D

Looks like your primary deficiencies now are a nice hammer fired service pistol and a .357 revolver. I'd suggest an FNP-45 or a Ruger GP-100, if you shop carefully you should find either one in your price range. That, or a lower-priced 1911 which I noticed you could use also.

Congrats on the weight loss! Inspires me to start running and getting into shape.

But I'd definitely would suggest an AR-15 if you dont have one yet. So much fun to shoot, though a few hundred over your price range unless you build yourself.

Other than that, have you looked at a DA/SA Semi? It seems most of the guns are internal triggers with one set trigger. Might be fun to learn a DA/SA trigger system. If so, I'd suggest a FNP9 or a Berreta 92fs.

I've been debating on the 1911 platform, I'm afraid I'll get addicted and need to get a couple of the higher end models.....

Everyone Should Have A Judge In The Family!

Hey there 96Project! First off, congratulations on losing all that weight! It is certainly a feat and something to be proud of and I think buying a new gun would be a great treat for all that hard work!

My suggestion for a pistol would be a Taurus Judge! Listen, I know that there are people that can sit here and debate the effectiveness or usefulness of the pistol with me all day long. Personally, I think it is a tremendous gun with A LOT of potential as a self defense gun ... I even did a review of it on YouTube! :) :D

But the one thing that cannot be debated is the fact that it is an absolute blast to shoot! While, it isn't my absolute favorite gun ... that honor falls to my Kimber ... it is the most fun to bring to the range and shoot! Bottom line is that no matter what anyone else says my Judge has a permanent home next to my Kimber and Sig!

Um, as far as the possibility of a rifle goes I will have to stick to what I know and suggest a Russian Saiga 7.69X39. It is an accurate well made rifle that has never given me any trouble and you can get ammunition for it at a very reasonable price!

I hope it helps!!! Regardless of what you decide on PLEASE keep us in the loop and tell us what you decided on!!! ( And maybe a few pics too :D )

* On the possibility of a 1911 purchase * I must tell you that I LOVE my Kimber and I trust my life to it without any hesitation or reservation but some of the 1911s are outside your price range which has a $600 upper limit. If you are seriously seriously considering a 1911 I would recommend saving some more cash and investing in a high end 1911 like a Kimber. JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION!

Thanks for the input guys!! I've thought about the Judge also, it's such a nasty gun, definitely wouldn't mind having one! I've really had the itch to get into a 1911, just don't wanna get a bad specimin since I'm trying to stay under $600. Can a truly decent one be had in that range? I don't mind used, but I do like the unmolested types.....

A used 1911

I would say used is okay as long as you give it a good once over before you buy it. I would assume, if the people on this forum are any indication, that most people take good care of their firearms ... i.e. cleaning, lubing and just general maintenance.

If when you say used you mean a range gun ... like one that is available for rentals ... I'd say no. Since rentals are in active use all the time they have many more rounds through them and a lot more mileage. And, I'm not trying to put any range down, but I don't think a range is as meticulous with cleaning and upkeep as a single owner would be.

Even used though ... try to stick with a good name ... I'd really hate to see you end up with the HighPoint (NO offense intended to you and other HP owners) of 1911s.

Good call on the range guns, I'd steer clear of those for sure. In my experience though, I'd love to get the "Hi-Point" of 1911's, that means it'd go bang for me every time, haha, J/K. Mine have been flawless, but definitely don't see SD/HD time, just plinkers at the range....
