I've got and like a scoped 10/22 that shoots .22 long rifles just fine. In fact, with the factory barrel, it likes Velocitors best of all. So my need for a hot-shooting scoped .22 is met.

Now I'm feeling an itch for a .22 I can shoot with irons, and one that I can use closer to town (when & where safe, of course), shooting shorts or CB's at times. I know from reading around that the Marlin 39a will do what I'm asking, but...well, it's a $500 gun, and I've already got a couple of centerfire marlin leverguns, and I'm just fishing around before I settle on another one.

So what quality .22's out there come with good iron sights and will shoot .22 rimfire ammo of different lengths?

My 39A was $475, and I haven't regretted that for a moment. Shoot one, and you'll see why.:)

Furthermore, most other quality guns that will shoot all 3 cartridges are in the same price range, or higher.

The Browning BL22 and Henry lever and pump guns will also shoot all 3.

The Remington 552 (semi) and 572 (pump) will do S, L, LR.

All of these but the 552 will work well with CB's, also, and all of the above are really nice looking, top-quality guns.

The inexpensive option, accurate but not the prettiest, would be the Marlin 981T tube-fed bolt gun. It's a quality gun, but not a fancy one.

there are many oldies that will do it, plus new ones in pump and lever.
But if you want a semi auto to do it, there is really only 1 choice, the remmy speedmaster. I have had several oldies by savage, springfield, winnie, etc., that were supposed to be able to do it, with reliability, but would not.
I was about to give up on my quest, until i found a used remmy speedmaster for 150(cheap, really). it is not only 100%reliable, but will fire accurately the super high velocity stuff, which none of my others will do.
it has been 100% reliable with even shorts, even when I use diff size rounds , at the same time, in the same tube loading.
new ones are 300, and the nice ADL'S are more like 400.
but if you want to skip the money spent, the heartache, and the crap, either get a lever, a pump, or the remmy speedmaster only, for semiauto.
make sure you download a copy of the owners' manual, so you know how to take it apart. It is quite a bit diff than what you will be used to.

Many Marlins do. However, I have to take issue with your concept Re: .22 S/L/LR. Save the money and buy some Aguila, Super Colibri, 20 grain powderless .22LR ammo: (375 FPS, 500 FPS or 600 FPS). This ammo is nearly silent, and is scary-accurate!

I am currently testing this ammo in my Savage Mark II w/ iron sights. Specifically, I have fired nearly 1,000 rounds, and have not cleaned the rifle. Yet, at I continue to maintain single-hole groups (about 1/3") outside to outside at 20 yards...seated but offhand, using iron sights...and it's almost silent. The firing pin makes more noise than the ammo firing.

I have made a recent post about this ammo. I will follow-up when I have fired enough ammo to "foul" the barrel. That may be a while. If by 2,000 or so rounds the barrel still has not fouled, I will post the full details all the same.

In closing, a Savage Mark II is sweet, and at $150.00 NIB, they are worth every penny. Don't buy expesnive Ss or Ls; get Aguila Super Colibri powderless.

I have a CZ 452 American, it feeds shorts from the mag with no troubles. No sights on it, but the other models in the line do. I'm considering a Scout for hunting tree rats. It has iron sites and it quite a bit smaller.

peace.

Seems like most older .22's (<~1965) were set up for S/L/LR.

What advantage would you have over shooting sub-sonic LR? They are quieter
Only if you use a silencer. The RWS 6mm, the Aguils Super Coliber, and even CCI CB caps are all MUCH quieter than any standard velocity load.
