Hi there! I'm relatively new to shooting in a major way (been plinking around for years though) and I had the opportunity to shoot my uncle's brand new Steyr Scout. I really like the idea of a scout type rifle but my budget will not support a Steyr by any means and I prefer semi-auto anyway.
So what I'm looking for is:
1. A semi-auto in either .308/7.62 NATO (pretty much interchangeable right?) or 7.62x39mm.
2. Relatively light weight, or at least with a decent selection of composite stocks and the like to help lighten it after the fact
3. Lots of 20-30 round magazine options that don't break the bank (I hear the Ruger magazines are expensive correct?)
4. Reasonably accurate
5. >$1k (so no M1A)
6. Something that won't necessarily take a gunsmith to put together
After searching the forums it seems like my best options would be an M14, SKS, Saiga, Mini 30, or an FN FAL. Could anyone that's done this with any of these give me any advice to help me decide which one?
Are there any guns I'm overlooking that would fit my requirements(not interested in any AR or AK)?
Ultimately, I'm looking to put one together with a synthetic stock and a 16-18" barrel and possibly having it threaded for a sound suppressor.
Thanks.
