Scout in .308...

I don't know, but I built another in 7.62X51 from a Enfield 2A1 that is an absolutely great shooter!

Scouts are great except for one thing.....

I've owned, shot, and been around quite a few Scout Rifles. I like and enjoy shooting SR's, but they have one MAJOR failing for MY uses. The foward mounted scope does not perform well at all in anything approaching low light.

The SR is designed to be a general purpose rifle, but for MY uses, the most common activity is whitetail deer and wild hog hunting. And most hunters[ based on thier local and terrain] will find that early in the morning and late in the afternoon are the most productive times of the day. That is when forward mounted optics have really performed poorly for me.

I love the design, I love the concept, but for MY general porpose rifles, I use a conventionally mounted scope on my .308 bolt guns.

Here's an improved pic of my "scout". It's based on 98K Mauser with a Burris 2 3/4X Scout scope.

Minscout, what's the scope base on your Mauser? That's one of the better looking scope setups that I've seen.

I have an old semi-sporterized Mauser on a VZ24 action that I was thinking of setting up like that.

Yep, the scout rifle's fading fast...
I have one of these: http://ultimak.com/

And a couple other scouts...

With more in the works.

PS, the Eotech on my AK works GREAT in low light... works even better with my NVG's...

Fine. Recognize it and act accordingly. The scout rifle is indeed general-purpose - meaning it's good at everything, but you can probably do better for specific purposes. You have a specific purpose, so optimize accordingly.

When I took my Steyr Scout to a long-range rifle course, I just put a rear-mounted 10x scope on it, and it performed admirably. If low light conditions are an issue, optimize your gun accordingly - which may only take swapping in a rear-mounted large-aperture scope.

It's a B Square base. Works fine, but I think the XS Scout mount looks better.

Who are YOU to say that?!

Tell that to Col Cooper... he and I talked about it...

(I disagree with him about the semi's....)

Uh, Nomad...

From Cooper's Commentaries, March, 1997:

"The scoutscope doth not a scout rifle make."

"The scoutscope is indeed handy on a scout rifle, but the scout rifle is a conglomeration of characteristics of which its sighting system is just one. The principle virtues of the scout are compactness, light weight and handiness."

Now, I never had the pleasure to meet Mr. Cooper, but this seems to be a point on which, in his writings at least, he didn't give ground.

I personally have a postwar manufactured K98k, original barrel cut and recrowned at 20", with a XS Sights scout mount on it. I've mounted a Burris 2.75x scope on it but I still need to have the XS ghostring sights added to it. However, due to the fact that it's too heavy, the wrong caliber, and over length, I will not call it a scout. It might be deserving of the appellation "pseudo-scout" but even that, I think, could be questionable.

And suddenly I remember this is a picture thread and I don't have a camera. Sorry 'bout that.

Now, all that said, I find it a handy rifle in my short time with it and look forward to taking it on a hog hunt in Texas sometime this year. And I believe that it will perform admirably for just about any circumstances I could realistically find myself. But it's still not a scout.

I took it as telling me the outlined Ak was not a scout... and if so, I'd like to know why, AND why the poster has any right to tell me it is not.

If I took it the wrong way I would like to know how it was intended, and I appoligise for jumping to conclusions.

PS, I find it both compact AND light weight (Although this may be tainted by carrying a M249) as well as handy...

I HAVE also found myself capable of being able to hold it at arms length... which was one of his MAJOR sticking points. (Don't remember if it was 30 or 60 seconds...)

not every gun with a forward-mounted scope is a scout rifle.

To illustrate this, I present for your inspection one "scout rifle."

Doesn't really cut it, even if I had a magnified optic there. Too many bits sticking out all over the place. I personally prefer KadicDeshi's quote from Cooper: compactness, light weight and handiness. I would also like it to include a full power rifle caliber. An AK can be handy and light but it's not really compact, and the military versions use intermediate calibers.

From all the unhacked milsurps I looked at, one that seems to get close is a Spanish FR-8.

ps - doesn't mean I don't love this rifle; I do, I just don't want to run, hide, run, hide, and run with it, nor make 400+ yard shots with it.

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings and I didn't say that anything was not a scout rifle. Here's how I took your earlier post. You linked to a page that had pictures of rifles with IER scopes. Since these rifles were of the type and caliber that Cooper had earlier rejected as being suitable Scouts, I thought you were making the common mistake of defining a scout rifle as just a rifle with an IER scope. If you talked to Cooper and he reconsidered his earlier opinions, that's fine.

There's really no reason to be offended or to question anyone's right to opine on what is or is not a Scout Rifle. No hard feelings, I hope?

Didn't say he reconsidered his feelings, just said what I outlined fit.
(And don't worry, you're gonna haveto REALLY try to hurt my feelings!);)

Since we're being picky... wrong caliber...? I didn't know .308 is the only one... Must tell Styer...

I'll drop this now... Everybody enjoy what they enjoy.

I say anything which will fufill the criteria and you feel does the job.

Here is my de-faced classic.
