Ok, this is a question for XD owners.

I'm in the process of deciding which flavor of 9x19 pistol I want, XD or Glock. Size isn't an issue right now, just platform.

Let me set the parameters of the question I'm trying to ask here, to avoid confusion:

Price aside, what made you choose the XD over Glock? (or HK,SIG,S&W, etc)

Specifically, what features appealed to you, that the others didn't have? What didn't it have, that the other did?

For myself, I like the Glock becuase it's a standard. It's got tons of aftermarket parts available, you can buy spare parts which unless it's changed recently you can't do with the XD, large-capacity mags are available, etc. Basically it's tried and true, with a ton of resources available.

As far as the XD goes - I like the styling more than the Glock - I feel like the pistol feels better in my hand, although there isn't a huge amount of difference between them. I like the 1911-style grip safety, which is familiar to me from shooting my own 1911. I like that large-capacit mags are available, although not quite the 33-rounders that are made for the Glock. I like that the sights are steel, rather than plastic.

The triggers of both pistols are not something I'm all that comfortable with, being used to a 1911, but I can get used to it. I know that adjustments to the Glock trigger are fairly easily done, but I have no idea what the process is like with the XD.

Like I said, price isn't an issue. Whichever I choose, I'll be saving up the cash I need to buy it before I buy anyhow - no more guns on credit! I guess I'm looking for real-life advice from people who have owned them, and (hopefully owned other pistols, but chose the XD as their favorite.

Thanks!

I was on the brink of buying a Glock but it just didn't fit my hand quite right. Then one day I happened to pick up an XD9 Service model and it was like it was made for me. I also liked the grip safety, but would have probably bought it regardless because it just felt right. I liked it so much that I went and bought another one before Christmas.:D I've put 1500 rounds down range and have only had one failure to fire which turned out to be bad ammo (WWB with a bad primer), and it is plenty accurate for me. My best with the gun is five rounds at 7 yards with a two handed grip and no support that I could cover with a quarter. I also liked what I heard about Springield's CS even though I haven't had to use it.

I have both a Glock 17 and a XD subcompact in 9mm. Even the XD subcompact is heavier than the full size Glock 17. If heavy is good the XD's the way to go. I love the XD subcompact as it really is two pistols. With the 16 round magazine it has a full size grip. Put in the 10 round magazine and you have a pocket pistol.

My Glock with a lot of ammo through it has a much better trigger than the XD. I'm not sure if this is because the XD is a subcompact or not.

I also like the Glock sights better. The three dot sights on my XD were poorly done - not filled in properly.

Both have been absolutely trouble free.

i had a glock and xd and i sold the glock and bought another xd. i have 2 and they are in my opinion the best poly guns out there.

the sa has a great reputation and they stand behind there products ad really know how to take care of there customers.

there are more and more aftermarket accessories avaliable. pistolgear.com has more and more stuff all the time.

mags are metal on the xd's but there is metal in more places on the xd than the glocks as the op stated above.

the xd's feel better to me, they point better and i shoot them better than glocks.

glocks are fne firears but i prefer the xd line!

Since Springfield has changed to the new melonite finish (which is supposed to be the same finish as Glocks, just a different trade name) I think the XD can hold it’s own, if not beat the Glock.

Some of the improvements/advantages (at least to me) are:

*Fully Supported Chamber
*Ability to shoot lead rounds(steal targets) & reloads
*Grip Angle (points naturally straighter like a 1911)
*Grip+Trigger Safety
*Loaded chamber and cocking indicator
*Sights made of metal, not plastic
*Trigger is made of metal, not plastic
*Guide Rod is made of metal, not plastic
*True ambi mag release
*Springfield’s Lifetime Warranty and Customer Service

All good points, thanks for the replies everyone!

One thing I was reading about on Wikipedia and wondering if it was true, was that the way the XD is designed, it will keep the slide from going out of battery when pushed up against an object, thus giving the shooter a better chance at maintaining a functional firearm in up-close shooting situations.

I don't plan on ever getting into an up-close shooting situation, but it's nce to know that if it happened, the design of the XD would help to ensure I still had a functional gun to work with.

So long story short, does anyone know if this is true? And if it is, does anyone know how much more likely the XD is to stay in battery in such a situation, versus a Glock or other similar autopistol?

sorry, thats not true. almost all locked breach pistols can be pushed out of battery.

as for your first question?

I shot them both side by side at a rental range. the XD won hands down. comfort, accuracy, and I like the slickness of the mags better.

Highorder - My mistake. What I meant to say, was that I read that the way it is designed, it makes it much less likely that it will be pushed out-of-battery in an up-close shooting situation. I understand that almost all autos can be pushed out of battery, just tryin' to find out if the XD is more resistant to the condition.

Price aside, what made you choose the XD over Glock? (or HK,SIG,S&W, etc)

It was there. :D

The toy store had an XD40 at the same time I was looking to trade off a couple of other guns. I read up here and elsewhere, saw persistently good reports, and did the trade.

Turns out I shoot it pretty well. It's reload friendly, kind to brass and magazines are relatively cheap. The sole issue with the XD (as far as I'm concerned) is parts availability, and that's getting better steadily.

I am not a Glock fan or a basher. I shot a few Glocks in 9mm, .40 and .45 cal. Fine guns and I hit accurately with them. The best Glock I shot was a 9mm, ran like a sewing machine. On Glocks the grip did not fit my small hands and for me in the larger calibers they seem to twist around with the recoil especially if shooting one handed. I don't remember how I came to handle my first XD but after shooting it I never looked back. The first one I bought was a 4" 40 then a 4" XD45 until I settled on an XD40sc. I personally like the grip safety and I even like that high profile I'm supposed to hate.

In the final assessment it works for me and goes bang on demand.

What Sold You On The XD

I picked one up in a trade, to see what all the hype was about. It was a decent gun, but I traded it for another Glock:) I prefer the shorter trigger, and almost instant reset of the Glock platform.

Like most everyone else, it fit my hand nicely and I liked the way it pointed. Now i've only shot one glock (9mm, dont know which model) but it just felt kinda cheesy to me. Ya know how sometimes you can pick up a gun and it just doesn't 'feel good' or 'fit right', thats me and glock. But the XD shoots great for me and I love it.

the design of the XD would help to ensure I still had a functional gun to work with.

Actually this IS true. While pushing the slide itself can get it out of battery, the guide rod on XD's is slightly longer than the slide face. The idea is the rod will help to act like a real standoff when pressed against a BG, door, wall, etc., if need be. One other thing is once it does get out of battery by much, the XD has a disconnect which will prevent it from firing. This is a GOOD thing. Will prevent KB's. I don't think Glock has the OOB disconnect, which can be dangerous.

Here's a thread talking about it. http://www.xdtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60459&highlight=stand-off

Have 2 XD's here at home, a 4" .45 and a 3" .40,and my wife and I really like the way they handle when shooting and easy strip and clean also! The accuracy was amazing to us,after shooting a Glock 30,not a bad shoot mind you,but for speaking for me only,I prefer the XD's.Going to buy a XD tactical in a few weeks, maybe a 357Sig in the mix too.

oh yeah i forgot to mention the ambi mag release is a big deal to me as i liek to use my trigger finger to drop the mag, and also it is of the round variety which easier for me to manipulate

also the ability to shoot lead as i shoot more lead than anything else.

I have a XD-45 ACP Tactical, and love it 100% no regrets.

reasons for my choice included

-grip angle more "on point" for me
-lodad chamber ingicator
-the butterfly saftey
-grip size (not bulky but still has 13+1 of 45 ACP)
-cost (I know you didn't want that but it was one of my factors)
-all the extras (simple belt holster, 2 mags, mag holster, mag loader, hard case)
-is looks way better than any glock
-internal extractor
-metal sights

What you said in your question starting this thread summed it up pretty well for me: I liked the grip angle (not that the Glock angle is *awful* -- I just like the XD's somewhat better) and the grip safety. I've been happy with mine, even if it's in fact not my favorite gun to shoot -- horses for courses, and that doesn't mean I don't really enjoy it.

EDIT: Oh, Yes, and though I'm still cautiously getting into reloading, when I bought the XD, one consideration was that it has a reputation of both leaving brass nicely shootable and having a well-supported chamber.

I chose my XD-9 Tac for the grip, balance, accuracy and trigger. Very good choice for me.

I chose the XD40 4" service because :

The grip angle and girth, it fits my hand very naturally, my finger falls onto the trigger in a perfect position.

I like the safety features, loaded chamber indicator, grip safety, cocking indicator.

Metal trigger, metal sights, metal guide rod

My XD is very accurate

Factory magazines are awesome, stainless steel and only $20, they seem to be very well constructed.

Field stripping the XD is an absolute breeze

No "glockified" brass.:p The XD is much friendlier to reloaders. Excellent chamber support.

That about sums it up.:D

Metal [dove tailed in] sights; not pinned on like Glocks.
Loaded chamber indicator on top of the weapon.
Striker indicator on the rear of the XD.
Ambi magazine release, steel guide rod (not plastic like found on Glocks).
Stainless Steel Magazines, Grip angle (similar to a 1911).
Grip safety, Price, and Springfield Armorys customer service. ;)

FWIW, certainly not the GEAR accessories~!

i liked it the first time i got to hold my XD45.. it fit my hands..

and the price was right.. ;)
