1. Pump 12 gauge shotgun - 870?

2. 30-06 - probably Remington 700

3. Glock 17

4. A .22 - Ruger 10/22

5. Assault rifle - AR-15, AK, 556, something to this effect.

I'm working on my 5 right now:

1: Handgun - HK USP 9c [Fitted with a Surefire tactical light for home defense]
2: Handgun - HK P7M8 [With a Milt Sparks IWB holster for concealed carry]
3: Rifle - HK MR223 or HK MR556 [The only item I don't have yet. Will decide which caliber when they are finally released]
4: .22 rifle - Henry AR-7 survival rifle
5: 12 gauge Shotgun - Benelli Supernova Pump Tactical

1. remington 700 30/06 w/leupold vari x III 4.5X14 50mm

2. remington 870 12 gauge w/21 inch barrel with choke tubes

3. ruger 10/22 w/leupold vari x II 3X9 40mm

4. colt m4 6920

5. glock 17 9mm

OK, I'll go along:
1. an autoloading pistol in a common caliber: S&M or Glock, 9mm or .45
2. a semi auto 22LR rifle: Ruger 10/22
3. a 12 ga shotgun, pump or auto.
4. a tactical rifle: AK47, AR15, or if you've got the $$, HK.
5. A cold carry revolver in .38 special. (we all know what 'cold carry' means, right?).

Thanks for all the input...

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I am new to owning guns and am in the process of trying to learn as much as I can from all the experience here on THR - Your advice will certainly be headed for my upcoming purchases!

My collection to date:

1.) .357 Revolver - S&W 686 (7 shot)
2.) Shotgun - 870 Remington 12 gauge
3.)
4.)
5.)

Reloading equipment is also on my priority list - I am reading all about now, but will start aquiring soon.

If we are talking about non NFA

AR-15
A-bolt "any reputable bolt action" in 30-06 or .308 with good glass
XD or glock in 45 or 9
870 ESM
10-22

Barrett .50 BMG
Springfield XD Tactical .45 ACP
M4gery chambered in 6.8 spc
AR10
Mossberg SPX 930

This is the ultimate arsenal in my book...;)

well, my personal "Arsenal" is

22lr 10/22 modded out for fun
22lr kadet kit for my p01
9mm p01
12 guage winchester
44 Mag Marlin lever gun

--an accurate .22 rimfire rifle, probably bolt-action
--a 12-gauge pump shotgun with a few different barrels
--an accurate bolt-action centerfire rifle in a common caliber, like .308, 30.06, etc.
--an intermediate-caliber semi-auto centerfire rifle, like an AK, AR, Mini-14, etc.
--a 9mm semi-auto pistol
--a .357 revolver

The main considerations here are (a) covering a wide variety of situations, (b) reliability of the firearm, and (c) availability of ammo.

purpose: interface (preferred implementation)
long-range: .204 bolt-action rifle (Savage Weather Warrior)
medium-range: .308 semi-auto carbine (PTR-91)
close-range: 12-gauge shotgun (Remington 870 w/synthetic stock & short & long barrels)
open carry on the hip: .45 semi-auto pistol (H&K USPc)
concealed carry/back-up: .357/38 revolver (Ruger SP101)

That'd give me very good reach with great accuracy, very good power against mid-range targets, very good coverage against close targets, very reliable protection on the hip and a solid back-up.

Could go with a heavier caliber for the bolt-action long-range rifle (.308 CZ 550 FS) and a lighter round for the semi-auto mid-range carbine (.223 AR-15). But I think I can put the lighter, faster round to better use out near the limits of my reach, where I'm more likely to be able to pick my shot.

And could switch out the pistols: revolver for open (Ruger Blackhawk .357(.38)/9mm Convertible) and semi-auto for concealed (9mm Walther PPS) carry. That would give me two handguns that could both use the same ammo, if only 9mm was available. But it would also force me into a single-action primary side-arm.

Btw, I enjoy these "If you were limited to N" threads because they force me to think about what do with this gun versus that gun and what could I do with that gun versus this one. I'm not worried about anyone imposing a limit on how many guns I own. I discourage that in much the same way that I discourage limits on speech and religious choice: I own as many guns as I choose (within the unimposed constraints of my budget); I worship as I choose; and I speak freely.

Rights well exercised are rights well protected. We're not victims just because people disagree with us.

The more likely real-life scenario that would limit our choices in weapons would be a disaster (natural or otherwise) that forces an evacuation. I may own all kinds of weapons, but if I have to leave in a hurry, I'll only be able to carry N of them in my truck, N-2 in my car, N-3 on my horse, or my bike, or my back.

I'm not the sort to keep a bug-out bag good-to-go with pre-selected weapons, food and toilet paper in my garage; but at least these threads get me thinking: What works best for what?

Plus they're fun.

That's one of the reasons I like to own, feed, shoot, clean, and talk guns. It's fun.

I mean no offense.

1. Mossberg 500 Marine finish, with cantilevered slug, cylinder, and screw-in choke barrels
2. AR-15 with at least the following uppers: .22 conversion & x1 red dot, .223 flat top 14" & 1x red dot or eotech, .223 flat top 16" & Acog, 6.8spc flat top 20" & high power scope, 7.62x39 flat top & red dot with BUIS
3. Medium frame .357 with 4" barrel. Astra, S&W, or Colt. Adjustable sights, orange nail polish
4. S&W 642 or 340 m&p with crimson trace and a bottle of orange nail polish as a backup
5. Modified Mosin Nagant 91/30, M38, or Enfield .303 (quality synthetic stock, Mojo Microclick sights or Scope mount with quality optics, polished chamber) Useful both for high power loads for big game/predators and gallery loads for small game hunting. Rimmed cartridge is key for re-using brass many times over.

Emphasis on #1-2 is swappable barrels for multiple uses/using whatever ammo is handy. #3-5 is reloading ammo for different purposes (revolvers to avoid hunting for spent brass and flexibility in loads, rimmed full power rifle case for above mentioned reasons)

Of course, this assumes I don't have to carry all that crap around. If I had to pare that down to minimum, cylinder choke barrel only for shotgun, .223 16" Acog only for AR

Returning home from a local gun show, my uncle and I had a discussion on what (5) firearms would be a minimum quality arsenal for someone just getting into guns (hunting, home defense, protection and/or practice). Open for any and all suggestions.

1) Sharps 45-70
2) 12 Guage Pump
3) Ruger 10/22
4) M4
5) 4" .357 Magnum Revolver or 5" 1911

You would definitely want a rifle in .22 and a pump-action 12 gauge, I would think a bolt action .30-06 or .308 and a combat style rifle in a medium caliber (7.62 x 39 or something of relative power. I wouldn't want a 5.56 or .223, but most people seem perfectly happy with them). And a handgun of some caliber, perhaps a .357 revolver? I would think a .357 would be the most flexible handgun.

I was basically in that same situation. Over the last 5 months I have now bought:

Ruger P95 (9mm - range/truck gun)
Kel Tec p3at (.380 ccw)
Mossberg 500 12 gauge (28" & 18/5" barrels)
Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r rifle

The only thing missing imo, and next on my list, is a .22lr - basically for cheap plinking/practice.

I don't do much hunting so my rifle was basically just something I happened upon because it was in great condition and only about $100 and is tons of fun. If you're looking for a more mainstream hunting rifle you'll probably want something in .308 or 30-06.

Also if you don't want/need a pocket gun, you could get a concealable carry gun that is a little bigger that could also serve as range gun. There are quite a few compact pistols under $500 in 9mm, .40 and .45 that are small enough to carry in a IWB holster, yet big enough to use at a range for extended periods.

I know there are a lot higher end, much more expensive guns out there. But I think my choices, while economical, are still reliable and of good solid quality. In the future, I may sell one or two and upgrade to something else, but right now I'm satisfied with what I have and am enjoying putting them through a workout.

AR-15 in 5.56mm w/ .22LR conversion kit

FNAR .308

Remington 870P

Ruger GP-100 Stainless, 4"

Ruger 22/45

I could be very content with those 5 guns. Very, very content. I'm also not a hunter, but the FNAR would work well for that, if a bit of an unusual choice.

I'll jump in.

1. 9mm or .45 pistol
2. Bolt action with scope
3. AR / AK - Semi Auto Rifle
4. 12 ga, Shotgun
5. .22 lr rifle (10/22)
