I would love to work in a gun store. Selling guns and chatting up the fellow nuts. Anyone know how one would get such a job? >__<

Assuming money was not an issue, either being a metallurgist or design engineer for a firearms company, or just working in a gun store.

How about one of those guys who gets to pheasant hunt with my dog in all the great places and get filmed for some half hour TV show? If I had known 30 years ago that I could do that and make a living at it boy would my life have been different.

I selected "Neither, I'd NEVER want to work with firearms! "

It isn't because I have anything against firearms. I don't even have a count as to how many I own because I lost count after 40 and never recounted them.

It is simply that I recognize that as a fairly senior computer programmer, there is no position for me in the firearms industry. Any smart manufacturer, distributor, publisher, or retailer affiliated with firearms is probably going to hire a company to do their software development for them. There isn't enough work for a full time programmer position. At most there is room for one or two network guys, and that would be at a place as large as S&W. I would gladly work for them as a consultant on a project (website development, software package customization, etc), but then I would still consider myself an employee of the consulting firm (or my own consulting business) rather than of the entity in the firearms industry.

I voted in the industry but really I would rather be a gun lobbyist. Then I get free toys from ALL the makers and get to play politics which is my passion anyway.

I applied at Crimson Trace, but was a lousy fit for their needs being employed in semiconductors. Not sure I'd want to be in the firearms industry unless it was on the perks side. You know, hunting show guide, trips all over the world to hunt game. I'd even pick up my spent rounds myself, honest.

Mix that with my jeep and a fishing pole and you get the idea. Outdoor bonanza, getting there is another part of the fun.

Here we are the Oregon coastal range in October for buck deer rifle season. It just so happens it is currently pissing buckets of water on our heads like no tomorrow. Crikey mates, this place it the Gore Tex capital of the world."

Something like that. Processes engineering associated with the manufacture of anything gun related would be nice. But a production line work, no thanks. Test engineer, oooh yeah.

I'd love to either open my own gun shop and shooting range combo or work in product design/testing/development for a nice firearms company like H&K, CZ, etc.

Been a gunsmith, didn't enjoy poverty but don't regret the eduction in firearms technology. Given the choice free of the the bounds of reality-
1. Tribal warlord
2. Gunrunner (loved the Nicolas Cage movie)
3. Distinguished expert in Mesozoic fauna (Dinosaur Paleontologist)
But I have to accede to reality and live with being a Technical Manufacturing Engineer in aerospace. At least I don't have to bleed or sweat for my job, I get a nice cheque every 2 weeks, and the job itself can be interesting.

I have to go with gunsmith. I just love building my own stuff, and I love guns. I'm from the LEGO generation.
But I also love teaching people to shoot, it's the most gratifying thing I can do, so range officer is a close second.

Wow, what a restricted list of poll options for dream jobs related to firearms.

I have the job already as a federal agent. Since I have been a young child, I dreamed of being something along the lines of an armed law man or armed secret agent. My job kind of combines both. Well, maybe not my current job, but over the past 28 yerasrs in general it was the dream job I had dreamed of when a kid, and it certainly was related to firearms. This is especially so because for 14 of those years I was a firearms instructor/range officer.

As for a job in retirement related to firearms, I could see being both a firearms instructor (part time - free lance), and a hunting guide for those who hunt with guns. Though when I think of it, I guess the best possible job would be to be an instructor/coach for a school rifle team; sadly there are very few of them around where I live.

All the best,
Glenn B

You know, Glenn, any local ROTC programs might be REALLY happy to have your help. They almost always have rifle teams. Check it out!

I've been working at it part time since I was in high school in Maine about 15 years ago:D

I started full time this February, and though it's busy and I'm behind, I'm loving it everyday. I work with my dad learning his trade, it doesn't get any more American. Look at my signature line:)

Springmom,

Thanks, I never thought of that, and I plan to retire in just over a year and a few months. it will be something I need to start looking into.

All the best,
GB

I've played range officer and it is a lot of responsibility. I've also played armorer and that's a lot of fun (and responsibility). Now that I'm growing up, I'd like to play curator of a gun collection (which I'm kinda doing right now in my spare time) as a paid professional.

i would like to be one of the accuracy testers for one of the big manufacturers. i think it would be awesome
