I'm new to .22 shooting. I know ammo is hard to come by, but assuming that weren't an issue, what's a good price for it? The only thing I've found is 50-round boxes of Aquilla ammo for $5 each. 10 cents a round seems great compared to 9mm, but it seems like people get it for quite a lot less than that.

Depends on the ammo. I've paid considerably more for match grade, but the average guy can't take advantage of the higher quality.

IF you can find Winchester white box at Wal-Mart, that would probably be best for the money. Other than that, get on the notification lists from places like Midway.

I have recently bought CCI Mini Mags from Gander Mtn. About 3 months ago, it was .08, 5 (100 count) max purchase.
A few days ago it .09, 2 (100 count) max purchase. I would not pay that for the cheaper bulk ammo from Remington or Winchester. They did have Federal Match for $5/box of 50, 2 box max purchase as well.

I got bricks (500) of 36 gr Federal for $25 each lately from a LGS.

Also 225 rd packs of 36 gr Remington from Walmart for $11.75 each.

I'd consider that normalish. Way better than $40 for a 325 pack like I've seen.

I bought a brick of Super X Winchester ammo from Cabelas last week for $37. That's 7.4 cents per round. Plus it came in this "cute" (wife's words) little wooden box that my wife wanted. I don't usually buy Super X but like I said my wife wanted it and she's been getting into shooting since I bought a Browning Buck Mark. Here's what the box looks like if you're interested.

About .07/rd is my current cutoff.
Not often I have the opportunity to buy it at that price, but when I do, I buy.
I ration my shooting to maintain a reasonable supply. Currently, 50 rounds per week...

Similar to orionengnr, if I see it locally for less than $0.08/rnd I usually grab it. For a while there it was a no brainer even at $0.10 as the alternative was not shooting my .22s. Lately, I have been shooting less .22, and have built up a fair supply of it, so I can afford to be pickier in replacing it.

Finding it for 5 cents a round is just unrealistic for people in most places now. It's sad but true.

I'm with you though, people bitch and moan but it's still roughly 1/3 the price of 9mm, making it very inexpensive to shoot. It seems like the norm is 7-10 cents a round now depending on quality and a few other factors. If I could find mini-mags I would gladly pay 10 cents a round. Other stuff is readily available for me though.

See the thread I started: "Can you find .22lr?" Lots of folks have weighed in on what the .22 ammo situation is for them, and it's very enlightening.

I have mostly semi-auto pistols, so copper clad is important to me. I like the consistency of CCI Mini-Mags, so at times I've paid $15/100 of that particular ammo. But I found plenty of it yesterday at a gun show for $10/100. Bought a thousand rounds then.

I've paid up to 10 cents a round, but no higher. I still pine for the old days when 2 cents a round was the routine and normal price, i.e., a box of 500 for $10. Availability is still a challenge where I am, with most local stores having no 22LR around, and some not-so-close gun stores having limits of two or three boxes of 50 at 8 to 10 cents a round, not enough quantity to justify the cost of gas to drive 45 miles away from home. So for now I just shoot from the stash I built up over the last several years before the shortages began.

If we all went shooting trap & skeet instead of .22LR for a year I'll bet U that price of cheap .22LR would drop back down to .05 per round. But how can we get shooters to strike back and not buy a certain product?

ive been paying $0.06/ round as of recently, its still somewhat hard to find, but prices arent outrageous when you do.

I got in 2,000 rounds of Federal last week for just over $.06 delivered.
Three years ago I could normally find bricks of Blazer locally for $18.99+ tax so basically $.04 per round.
In 1997 it was free according to some on THR OR they can reload 44 mag for less than they can buy 22 LR.
I would buy the ammo you can find to get a small stash and then shop the internet for a little better pricing. Right now it seems you sort of have to take what you can find rather than being too choicy and that Aguila should be fine.

Well, just an old man reminiscing. Back in the mid 1950s, I used to buy 50 count boxes of .22 shorts for 25 cents, 35 for longs, and 45 cents for long rifle. Gee, those were the good old days! 'Course, wages were mostly less than a two bucks and hour for higher paying jobs. Seems Dad was making about $1.10 an hour.

I still never see it on the shelves but I'm not looking too hard. I have a few bricks of Federal bulk but have largely stopped shooting .22 lr in favor of .22 pellet guns. 500 pellets for less than $10.

Ammo Seek is one of several ammo search engines. You can look for a good price and then compare between suppliers. If you are unfamiliar with a brand a google search should get you reviews on the specific ammo.

I live and the boonies and the nearest retailers never have ammo or it's really high so I always buy online.

Last that I have seen in a store was about 0.10/round, but I think $0.07-$0.10 is about the norm now. Not willing to pay that for promotional grade 22LR (yet). Will see how things go in a couple years. I purchased quite a bit prior to the current shortage at about $0.03-$0.04/round.

I still pine for the old days when 2 cents a round was the routine and normal price

I still pine for the days when .22 ammo cost less than a penny a round too. Times change and prices go up. The crazy panic prices aren't acceptable and I never bought any ammo at those rates. I could have sold some but I wouldn't even do it. Now prices are coming down slowly as more and more ammo becomes available. I bought my first full brick in quite a while last week and it was 7.4 cents a round for Super X. That's only about a penny a round more than it cost before the panic. Things will eventually settle down to a normal position I believe. If they don't I'll have some expensive paper weights in my safe. I guess I can make some lamps. There's a point where I just would refuse to buy .22 ammo if it meant I never got to shoot again. I'm only shooting what I can replace now but that's a lot more than this time a year ago.

How much is a good price depends on how much work you want to put into it. Around here you can get some from an LGS for around .10 per. Walmart runs about .05 cents per, but that still means waiting in line for at least an hour or two, plus the work in determining when and where it is in stock.

Online can be a bit of work as well, getting set up on notifications and getting moving on them quickly enough, plus you generally need to order a good chunk of it to make it worthwhile with shipping.

So, there's no good answer. It's just how much you are willing to work for a good price.
