Hey THR! I've been lurking around here for a while and I thought I'd finally contribute. Last week I had the opportunity to test some exotic shotgun ammunition. We tested the Bolo round, the Rhodesian Jungle, and the Terminator slug. This got me thinking. What's the most exotic ammunition you have ever fired?

Here are the results of the Bolo for those that are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toYywyiOBw0

Not as exotic as the legendary 22LR but ...

600 Nitro Express out of a double rifle. Two years ago and my shoulder still aches.

I laughed out louod,,,

I shot some 22lr once.

I laughed out loud.

The most exotic I have ever fired was one round of 56-56 rimfire from a Spencer carbine.

I don't think it was an original (as in antique) round,,,
I remember the man saying something about reproduction ammo.

It was at a civil war reenactment when I was a kid living in Maryland,,,
There was a range set-up where you could pay to fire the vintage weapons,,,
My grandfather paid a couple of bucks so I could experience something very unique.

This is going to be lame but probably... 7.62x54mmR!

Same here. Everything else I've shots been pretty modern and has been some very well established cartridges. Plus I'm a cheapskate so just thinking of the extra costs of exotic guns and ammo gives me phantom pains in my wallet.

My hometown produced 95% of the .45 acp in WWII. A special round was developed at the plant for the survival kits. It was a slightly long .45 acp shotshell with a paper bullet shaped capsule.

Got some in a lot at an auction, no box. Didn't know what I had and shot it out of a revolver. :rolleyes

About 14 years ago I got to put a couple of rounds through a .50 BMG bolt gun. It was pretty neat. Last summer one of my relatives from Scotland was over here visiting and we went to the range. He's fired most of my stuff before when he was here but a guy was there that day with a Sako (IIRC) in 375 H&H and let him touch off a couple rounds off of a shooting tripod. He almost flipped; I snapped a picture of his face as he turned around after the first shot. It's priceless.

Wow some pretty awesome replies to the question! I think the most exotic thing I have fired would have to be an M-240 or a mortar.

Do these count in what you are asking for?

I have fired Gyrojet rounds from a pistol and carbine. Also fired one Dardick tround before.

Got to fire a RPG-7 HEAT... that cost me $200.

Scraping off the stuff on match heads, cramming into a bicycle spoke barrel nut with a pencil lead for the projectile and touching it off by the heat of another match.

Great fun!

1 round of supervel .357 that I found in a cigar box at a yard sale. It had a primer dent but it went bang when I dropped the hammer. It was in a box of brass that turned out to be pretty good.

I was all set to challenge John 828 on the existence of the rumored 22LR until I remembered that I had a few myself. Aside from that the most unusual cartridge I've shot is the 38-70. It's a 45-90 case necked to about .378. It uses the same bullet as 38-55 and 38-56. Winchester made 830 1886's for it. For years I've made a habit of killing a deer a year with it.

Arguably 7.62x54R is modern in the sense that it's still in military use. Now 7.62x38R on the other hand, either that or 8x56R on 5 round en bloc clips made in National Socialist Germany, would have to be the most exotic I've shot.
