Couldn't do better than the "all around" 30-06. Of course, I have to admit a certain partiality to the .308. And the .22lr is alot of fun.

My favorite because it is 111 years old and still in use: 7.62x54. I shoot this stuff at 9 cents per round!
However, in terms of design 30-06. Unfortunately, surplus for this is 3 times more expensive.

For hunting my favorite all time cartridge is the world famous 7x57 Mauser. It has long barrel life, low recoil and shoots plenty flat enough for reasonable hunting ranges and if you are a skilled shooter long range shots are very easy.

Some of the most famous old time hunters in all the world used this fantastic cartridge uncluding Jim Corbett the words greatest man eating tiger hunter and W.D.M. bell who killed over 1,000 elephants with this cartridge.

Although many younger shooters may like the newest super day dream fire spitting blasters that burn out rifle barrels in less than 800 rounds and knock the fillings out of your teeth from the recoil of only one shot and often create a lot of permanent flinchers I will stick with a cartridge that has killed just about every mammal on the face of this earth when in the hands of a skilled rifleman and hunter.

I`m glad to see others who appreciate the 6.5x55 as much as I do. It`s a great "all-around" round.

I also really love the 45/70. Still a great backwoods round after all these years.
