Where would you NOT move to due to Firearm laws

CA. Have relatives in HI. Would love to live on the big island, but yeah.....

WA is indeed not so bad. Been here nearly 30 years now.

My native state CA is just nasty. My brother still lives there, owns guns and just puts up with it. He's not even politically active. Drives me a little nuts.

Come to NH, come to NH, come to NH!!! We have no sales tax, no income tax, 4 beautiful seasons. And aside from a $10 processing fee, we are a shall issue state for CCW. We are working on constitutional carry. There are no other restrictions besides the federal shenanigan. Bring friends, bring family and vote.

Why not? Anyone who is gun friendly is Welcomed in Washington.

The immigrants ( Californians ) drive up the cost of housing and with it property taxes. At my last house in what was admittedly a craphole town in the middle of nowhere in Oregon I was paying $6000 a year in property taxes because of the influx of Californians driving housing costs up. Gets old quick. Portland is what it is now because San Francisco got to be too expensive so the riff raff moved to the next cheaper town North. Seattle was too expensive so they landed in Portland. It used to be a nice city. You see it all up and down the I-5 corridor. Californians come up and don't leave their ways at the border.

Sam1911's list is about right: NY, MD, NJ, CA, HI, IL, MA.

I lived in MD before I really got into guns; lived in NY long enough to get an unrestricted carry permit--what a hassle. NY laws have gotten more stupid since I left. Given the choice, I wouldn't move back there, even though the finger lakes are beautiful.

Yeah, I'm hoping they don't discover my neck of the woods - it's probably the best value in California, and the smallest lot in my "development" is five acres. I just keep telling all the aging hippies how great Yakima is....well, Yakima and Boulder, CO.

Doesn't matter to me.

I'd likely stash offending firearms in a friendly state with family rather than sell them but I've lived in Mass and California and living there for the reasons that I did - I coped firearms wise.

Fact is, if I coulda made it work in California, I might still be there and firearms regulations had ZERO percent to do with leaving other than being a societal indicator along with my old cars, motorcycles and dogs as hints that I might be happier elsewhere.

Did I leave California and also turn down a great job in Massachusetts because of firearms? Not a chance beyond - as above noting - the pervading mentality which leads to silly gun laws is throughout their societies.

Todd.

Its not the aging hippies that are the problem. OK. They are a problem . Its the ones who are 20 ish years old or even 40 ish years old acting like they are 20 years old. The west side of Oregon is in tatters because of the scumbag neo hippies.

I was offered a job in CA last week when a co-worker resigned. Move to the LA area, actually just north of LA in Ventura County. 10 minutes from the Reagan Library. Get a 45% raise over my current compensation. Company paid airfare back home whenever I needed it. I turned it down and so did the other guy I work with that lives in GA.
I enjoy the weather in parts of CA and really like the people but I can't live there. Guns are definitely a BIG part of my decision, maybe number one. No way I could cross the border with heven a third of my firearms. Outrageous taxes! Gasoline is $1 higher per gallon. Every co-worker out there has their kids in private school at about 3x what a comparable school costs here.
I have had plenty of opportunities to move to Florida and have always passed. Gun rights are not an issue but I really don't care for the 95 degree temps in February or all the people.
New York and New Jersey. No way, no how. Upstate NY is great but that city...
Illinois. I know most of the state is wonderful and I hunt there but Chicago just puts a bad taste in my mouth.

Same here. Had an offer for plant engineer last year at the company that makes animal crackers of all things. Orange County. Offer was $150K ish which will stiff afford a decent place with my wife working without too much of a drive. Looked into the gun laws and decided there was no way it would work. All my NFA stuff would have to go into storage and even most of my title 1 stuff would be illegal in CA. Bagged that one. The best weather in the world isnt worth that.

I live here and I would have to say IL. The FOID act pretty much is a State Police gun monitoring system. Get pulled over by a State Cop? They immediately know that you are a gun owner and have a carry permit. The last State to pass concealed carry and only because the Supreme Court made them. I definitely wouldn't move to Chicago, nothing but trouble. If I had to move from this anti-gun State, 2nd on my list would be California. I have friends out there and they say it's pretty ridiculous.

Off the top of my head

Definitely no:
HI
CA
NY
NJ
MD
MA
CT
DC

Probably no:
MI
NC
PA

New Jersey is the absolute worst.

Having lived there I can attest to all those reasons.

Anyone reading Midwest's post and thinking he is exaggerating: he's not. Not in the least. NJ is actually worse than that. I can come up with a number of additional reasons and illustrative examples.

Every gun I own is illegal in NJ.

You are better off in New York state or California,

Agreed.

Agree 100%. Washington probably has the most non-invasive and relaxed gun laws in the nation.

Clearly you have forgotten that the southeastern states have rejoined the union.

New Jersey scares the bejeebers out of me, as does DC. Jail time for an empty casing!

We have a Bunch of power hungry control freaks who would confiscate guns if they had the fortitude to try, other than that, our very clear state constitution is still there last I checked.

The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired...

 What aspect of the VA gun laws makes you to consider them "a little wonky"?
If I recall right you have some odd NFA requirements in regards to machine guns and the recent flap over concealed carry permits from other states,

Many people say that gun laws are near the bottom of the list when looking at moving to a particular state. That may be true but the way I see it, how a state treats you via the gun laws also shows how they treat you in a lot of other things. States that allow permits to carry but charge hundreds of dollars to get thru the red tape will also nickle and dime you for a lot of important things in your life. Taxes will cut you a thousand times as you slowly bleed to death.

We only need to see how our buddy Bloomers tried to control the masses by outlawing Big Gulps in NY. The banning of Big Gulps is minor compared to how it is a way of controlling the minions. NYC and NYS has a serious need to control/monitor a large part of your life.

So, say that the gun laws don't matter but see how the gun laws reflect how the state treats the people in a lot more aspects of their life. It tends to hold true. The most oppressive states with their gun laws are usually the most oppressive with taxes, oppressive laws and Big Brother rules. IMO of course.

Well, for us, the gun laws more certainly matter. And we put it into practice, we moved to Georgia for work a while back. Plenty of states were not considered

I'd never, ever, ever move to the Northeast no matter what their gun laws so I dont even talk to recruiters about jobs there..

As far as the Northeast goes, New Hampshire and Vermont are ok.

So is Maine. It even has Constitutional Carry now.
Glad we got that straightened out.

Word: if you move to the "NE", move far enough NE to get past the drag states.

Proud resident of Maine, on the S border of the North Woods.
Call the cops up there, they may show up tomorrow.

When seconds count, the police are only a day away.

I know very little about the overall shooting situation in Hawaii. I know there are hunters and the like but I don't know if there is public land or how any of that works, especially for a non-native. No-go though.

No, but i must say: California has awful laws and awesome shooting opportunities. When I lived in CA I shot far more often than I do in Texas. I still visit CA regularly, always bring a few guns, and I go out and have a lot of fun shooting in situations you just can't duplicate in Texas without buying a lot of land. My reasons for not taking up legal residence in California extend beyond guns though...taxes and more are at issue.

Illinois has the same problem as California...the big city dominates the whole state, with predictably awful results.

Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, and North Carolina are no-goes due to the permit required for buying a handgun.

Rhode Island is a no go as well...California taught me all I needed to know about waiting periods and "safety tests".

Washington...I don't like the police notification of everything as it is back door registration of guns and owners, so nope.

And of course the obvious children: MA, MD, CT, NY...nope.

That's my list. 14 states and the District of Columbia, if I counted right.
