which .40 S&W is better?

I have carried almost everything on your list, and many many more. I usually end up carrying a Glock, just because they carry well, and are good with rain, sweat, etc. The XD line is really good--hard to go wrong there. I am also impressed with the M&P compacts. HK and Sig make better guns overall, but I have carried them and always go back to something smaller/polymer framed. I carry 24/7 for work though, so its got to be comfortable as a constant companion. FN guns are great, but they are big. The SD-40 is good now that they changed the heavy as crap trigger, but its more of a budget gun than the rest.

For the money the ruger sr40c would be best. But I havent handled one yet.
I'm leaning more towards the glock 23 mainly cause they are reliable but I can switch the barrels for a different caliber if I choose to. Plus there are plenty of things to add on a glock.
I like springfields but didn't consider them cause I didn't see much of them when I went looking around.
This weekend or next weekend I will be at a range renting them to see which feels best overall.

I'm in the Ruger camp. Having shot the Glock and XD (of those two, I'd go with the XD because I had to work TOO hard at accuracy with the Glock), nothing fit and felt more natural than the Ruger. The grip is just long enough that I don't have to use the finger extension (I now actually prefer it to the 17 round mag), which helps concealability. Plus it was less than $400 NIB.

But some people like Chevy.. I like Ford.

I ended up with a Glock G23, a compact 40. I also got an LWD 357 Sig barrel and a 40-9 conversion barrel for it wit 9mm mags. No other mods required. The 9mm shoots best with 124g bullet however. EDC is the 40 though. Sweet gun.

I think the Glock and the FNH would be fine, and "Sig" is a wide range of sizes so I'm sure you could find something you like in there. The S&W SD is alright, but if you can afford a G23 that's a better option.

My vote: G23.

I went to shoot this weekend. Rented a glock 23, ruger sr40c, smith & wesson m&p40, and a springfield xdm40(fullsize though). I forgot to mention that I'm a lefty when I posted this.
But back to my first impressions....
Glock 23- wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The grips were a little to wide for my hands and empty cartridges kept flying towards my face. Put 20 rounds in and 7 or 8 hit me and found 4 in my shoe.
That was the only problem I had. Maybe it was an isolated situation but between those my personal picks are the springfield and the ruger.
I willl head back and try another glock and a sig

Be sure to try a SIG P229 in .40. IMO the among the finest if not the finest 40 pistol there is and was built to be a .40 .

The SIG P229 is the pistol of choice for the Secret Service.

For reliability, price and quality it's hard to beat the CZ line. When you go back to the range, see if they have the CZ in .40S&W to rent. It handles recoil better than any gun I've shot. It's worth a shot, so to speak.

In today's world, there is Glock and everything else that is trying to be a Glock. It is what it is.
In yesterdays world, there were Model "Ts" and everything else that were trying to be Model Ts.
Thankfully we keep advancing.

For 40 S&W, don't overlook:

P229--heavier frame and full grip make a difference (especially on long range sessions)

M&P 40c and SR40c --- concealability and incredibly great feel in the hand (triggers are very different)

Glocks aren't the best guns out there. that's just an opinion. Me personally, I believe that the 1911 designs are the best.
I'm not hating glock, but it wasn't for me.
I'll look for a sig to try out next.

SD40 or an M&P 40 if you can swing it. The selling point for these is that the M&P was designed around the .40 from the get go whereas most polymer pistols were originally conceived as 9mm platforms. Reliability wise, an M&P 40 won't let you down. Please not an Xd or Xdm.
