I haven't shot a FNX-45, and don't care for Glocks (Sorry, just not a fan), so I would have to say CZ97. Great guns. Well, the ones with no de-cocker anyway, and I'm a 1911 fan as well, but since it wasn't a choice. :)

I voted for the CZ 97B, but I would, and did, buy this instead:

Cheaper and IMHO, every bit as good, plus it holds 14+1.

I have to agree -- the M1911, because tens of thousands of Mexicans, Hataians, Nicaraguans, Germans, Russians, Japanese, Italians, North Koreans, Chinese, North Viet Namese, Viet Cong and Arabs can't be wrong.

Being from Chicago, I'm going to vote a second time for the CZ. As I mentioned before, I own or have shot all of the above and own 5 1911's. All are fantastic. That being said, I was at the range today with my son, who hadn't yet shot the CZ. His eyes lit up after shooting the first magazine and he told me that it was by far the best .45 I own. It does have a larger grip than the other guns mentioned, but if the grip works for you try one before you buy anything else.

All of the choices in your poll are second tier handguns.

A 1911A1 single stack, or if you feel inadequate is some way, a double stack would be the best, bar none, choice.

I'm a satisfied Glock owner, and also a proponent of keeping consistent manuals of arms whenever possible, so I feel compelled to suggest the G41. I mean, everything about it that's different from other Glocks was put there specifically for range use, which is what the OP wants. That said, if I ever buy a 45 (don't own one currently), it will be a 1911. So those are my recommendations. Look within and you'll feel the pull toward the 1911. But if by some freak chance you don't, the G41 is there for you.

Interesting 13 have responded with 1911 and a couple mention that as first choice and then do as ask and choose from the list.

Something to think about.

In the way back while still a teen I got to use a 1911A1 built up on a Ranger brand aluminum frame. I really liked it but at less than 16 had no choice but to watch it leave after shooting it a bit. My dad was the one buying a gun and he decided he wanted a revolver. I liked the way that light weight felt and honestly as much as I love steel 1911 types always wished for that one back.

Anyone making a full sized 1911A1 with a light weight frame these days?

Please do not call the Air Marshals to use the anti highjacker ammo on me......

I also have a Glock 21 and RIA 1911 Tactical and am happy with both of these guns.

kBob, Colt used to make a Lightweight Government Model as part of their XSE line. It's discontinued, but they're out there. I can't think of any other lightweight 5-inch 1911s offhand.

Glock 21. Softer shooting than the 41, and with a Taran extension, 17+1 rounds of .45 ACP is impossible to argue with. That weight, along with an X300 on the front, makes the gun handle remarkably well.

I should have picked the FNX. Accidentally hit Glock 21.

For HD work, I'd much, MUCH, MUCH rather have a DA/SA gun vs a striker fired gun. Reason being is I keep the gun out, at the ready. I don't want to have to cock the gun before hand and when I'm really tired and just got woke up at o' dark thirty to a threat I don't want to have to worry about manipulating safeties or the light pull of a striker handgun. I'd rather have that DA pull with safety OFF just like a revolver.

And with the FNX you get 16 shots of APC and a tac rail. Freaking sick bruh.

He doesn't want a 1911 and the resulting headaches.

Glock 21 Gen 4. While I like the 41, the 21 can be more easily carried should you ever need to for some reason.

Of those I would take the FN. I'm not wild about glocks in .45 for a number of reasons. I honestly can't justify owning one versus a G17 and would rather have a G17 for the purpose you stated.

I've never used the CZ. I have shot other CZs. I shot the FN side by side with an HK 45 I owned (I can't really justify it in any way vis a vis a number of other choices in 9mm). There was a lot I like about it. I have 1911s and while I like them more in some ways I don't see an FN 45 with 15 rounds, a light rail, and being suppressor ready, being a foolish choice per se. Personally I don't have enough time measuring performance in terms of time and accuracy objectively to know how I'd end up feeling about the FN vis a vis some other guns I have. I didn't hate it over the little time I had on it.

For everything apart from carry (which I do still on occasion) it is almost impossible to beat the Gen 4 Glock 21 for a general use .45 ACP.

My preferred open carry and woods gun.

Though, for a first .45, a good 1911 is also hard to beat

I've tried but can't find any interest in polymer guns. Therefore, from your list, it'd definitely be CZ 97 for me.

After I got my CZ 97 I completely lost interest in shooting the 1911 platform and ended up selling my only 1911. I just love the way the 97 operates (especially so with a $40 Ultra-lite spring kit from GGW).

Regarding the size of the 97, I don't find it overly large, grip wise, to my regular size hands (I wear size L gloves, like most men). Here are some comparison photos. I find that it feels more secure in my hand than the stick-straight grip of the 1911.
