Why a 22 LR rifle is considered by many the ultimate survival firearm?

Ruger 10-22 for me. When the time comes that I need an AR there will be plenty laying on the ground

As I remember, he carried two knives. One was Lady MacBeth. Did he name the other one?

I read the book a long time ago and the logic made sense to me. Gotta find a copy of it and refresh my failing memory.

A good knife and a .22 will cover a lot of survival scenarios.

Spikes tactical makes a conversion bolt as well. It's nickle plated and better than both the CMMG and Ceiner kits IMO. I have one on a dedicated .22 lr AR upper and it's been flawless through 2000 rounds so far. It's more reliable than any 10/22 I've had and easier to clean.

this has been my experiance as well. absolutly flawless function. mine is the stainless CMMG.

I have a .22lr match, and .22mag bls ordered for contender;and have larger cal for "bear".I know it's not for fire fights but for survival ie backpack living, how much ammo will you carry for Big Medicine?Abrick of match .22lr and four oe five boxes of mag,and you are good for survival for some time [ for a meat gun ] ,now worry about clean
H2O;and a few simple comforts.

22LR is fine, but i always prefered the 22 magnum

* People complain that the 22 mag is expensive, but in reality its still cheaper than any center fire; commy surplus perhaps being excepted.

* even with the notoriously bad BC of a 22 caliber bullet, a 22 mag will still have more power at 100 yards than a high velocity LR will have at the muzzle. This gives you more to work with if you find yourself needing to make a shot on a larger target

* 22 mag rifles are not significantly louder than 22LR pistols. The report will not be heard indoors more than 1/4 mile away.

* you can carry practically as many round as a 22LR

Others will have their own opinions, but this one is mine. A good bolt action 22 Magnum fitted with a tube-style ring mounted red dot scope is my choice: accuracy, adequate caliber, fast sight acquisition, and relatively quiet. :)

Alot of survival depends on the skill and will of the person. Everyone's forefathers did it without firearms. In some places people still do. Any firearm is a giant step toward survival. Any plan and any skill set is better than none.
I have my 22lr picked out but I will keep my options open. Many good points made here regarding the best tools. But tools need will and skill to be effective. It would be a good idea for you to pick your tools, then try living off the land a few days. In a city you may need to add a ski mask, LOL.

I have a 22 conversion for my 1911 and a 10-22 my wife would get the 1911 and a mini 14 I would take the 10-22 and another pistol. There isn't a gun I own that doesn't have at least 1K of ammo except the 7mmWSM, 22 I have 8K

When I was a youngster my Dad would go to Timmens, Onterio to an old "outfitters" (poacher) place to hunt. Old guy didn't speak english very well and had to have his wife interpret most things. Anyway, when Dad asked him why he carried "only" a .22. He managed to find the English to say..."1 shot deer, two shot bear, three shot moose!" And they all believed him.

My cousin went out with him to a dump to scout and the guy pulled out a bow, shot a bear and it ran them both onto the top of his car. Guess he should'a used his .22!:D

I think a perfect combo would be a single shot .308 pistol such as a TC or XP-100 and a .22 long rifle, and one or two great, fixed blade knives. :)

I refuse to accept the notion of 1 gun survival.

Since I live in the country I’ll bug in, then it’s 12 gauge and .30.30.

If I have to leave it’s a .45acp and a .22 rifle (cache the others) only going far enough to avoid contact but with the intention of getting back to the homestead and other guns as soon as it’s safe.

i can make every thing you need to shoot black powder.

So, how many pounds have you made so far? How did it compare with store bought? Just as accurate? Same kick ? How is the shelf life?

If you can only have one firearm is has to be a .22 rifle. If you can have 2, add a .223. 4 bricks of .22lr easily fit into my bugout bag and could harvest 2000 meals for you, provide protection, and be used for barter. Small game is much easier to bring to table than deer, but my friends grandfather who lived in northern Wisconsin in the '30s fed his family with deer he poached using only a .22 rifle and a couple of handfuls of .22s.
Unless you are defending/living in a fixed location IMHO a shotgun and its ammo is far to heavy to consider. One 12ga high brass shell weights almost at much as one BOX of .22lr! Survival mandates that any game you take is shot on the ground, or on the water, to save ammo and to bring a sure meal to the table.

dehughes that is a marlin 39.
I much rather have a 22 than a shotgun or larger rifle. I cheat and shoot birds and running things before they fly or take off so I do not need a shotgun. That and a large rifle is tooo loud.

I believe the other knife was a Bowie knife that he appropriately dubbed "Colonel Bowie."

:)

Everybody says "I don't intend to get into any firefights."

Yeah, who does?

If/when a fight is imposed upon you, is .22 what you want to be using?

An accurate .22 pistol to harvest game and to backup a major caliber weapon.

Yes, .22 pistol for small game and maybe some earlier thoughts re: AR-15 w/22 lr bolt. That was my set-up for about ten years.

I used to live in the middle of nowhere but now reside in an urban area. My options are limited to either perfect timing to get out or hold high ground with good neighbors.

Let's all hope we don't have to try our skills as I can tell you from foreign exchanges it's not fun or comfortable. Just joined THR and am very optimistic by all the like-minded folks. It gives me "hope" I can believe in.

God bless

"Hey IV Troop, what make/model is that lever rifle? "

It is an old Marlin Model 39 "Mountie" with a 20" tube. It is without question my favorite rifle.
