I voted "informal shooting" since that's what I do with them the most, but really I have numerous reasons for owning guns.

-I really do enjoy shooting. The feel, the sound, the skill that's involved...
-I exercise my principals.
-I have an extensive educational background in both the physical sciences (Physics and Geology) and the arts (English and Classics), and any item or hobby which combines elements of both is incredibly appealing to me.
-Should the need ever arise, I can use them for self-defense.

And so forth...

All of the above except hunting. I plink for fun, I compete, I carry concealed and open, I practice for competitions and defense. I keep an accurate rifle with plenty of ammo and keep in practice with it because I believe its every able bodied citizen's duty to do so.

I don't own a gun -- in part because I can answer "yes" to all of the above.

It would be about as hard to hunt or shoot clays with an Airweight as it would be to ward off a burglar with a 28" O/U.

Apart from the fact that a lot of authoritarian politicians want to keep me from owning any guns, different guns serve such different purposes that they really don't fit in the same category of "tool" any more than BBQ tongs and a hammer do (I own those, too).

I grew up with guns always being a part of my life. I do not even consider why I have a gun. It is a part of my growing up.

For me this is like asking why I have a car / telephone / etc.
