Why do you own a gun?

1. Because the previous owner of the gun died
2. Because it looked neat and came from a time period I was interested in
3. For self and home defense
4. To hunt deer
5. To hunt small animals
6. To hunt birds
7. someone offered me a really good deal and I wanted to help them out.
8. Because we all agreed to get that particular kind of gun and I didn't have one yet
9 To teach the kids to shoot on a platform that could grow with them
10 In case I ever need to disable enemy materiel from a distant, covered position (or shoot cans really far away)...

The list goes on and on. Each gun I own, I own for a different reason. If there was only one reason, I'd only own one gun.

I rationalize a lot of gun purchases for self defense reasons, but the likelihood of me ever having to use one for self defense is slim.

It's a difficult poll to answer, because I own guns for at least 3 of the reasons you've listed, and I can only pick one for the poll.

But the answer would be, in order of priority:

1. Self defense
2. Informal shooting
3. Hunting
4. Competition

3 and 4 are probably tied, but they are not very much behind 1 or 2, and 1 & 2 are very close.
