Why Is Varget Priced So High?

Same problem up here...Two weeks ago I wanted some VV 3N38 for 9mm. Local dealer wanted $40/lb plus tax. Ordered two pounds from PV for $27/each. The difference in price paid for the hazmat alone. Then took advantage of their cheap primers and Unique and got all my BLC-2 for the year. Hazmat and shipping is not that much when you can save $13/lb and no sales tax. Over the past years I have found if you order $175-$200 from PV you will save money over buying local. Not hard to do if you shoot on a regular basis.

OH NOES!! $4 more? damn those price gougers!

Huh? The $4 price difference in what was being sold had nothing to do with the gouging comment. I can buy 8 lbs of Varget from Powder Valley for $22.50 lb. or from Wal-mart for $28.62 lb. That's a saving of over $6 per lb if I buy from Powder Valley instead of Wal-Mart, or over $48.00 for 8 lbs of powder. I would call that gouging.

just because something is available from another seller for a lower price does not mean the higher priced seller is price gouging.

"gouging" specifically refers to sharp rises in price after upsets in supply or demand. what went on during the great primer shortage of '09 might could be considered gouging, but even then, it's just supply and demand doing their thing. maybe your problem is with capitalism.

in any case, i'm glad you have found a powder source that you feel is priced fairly.

I would call price gouging throwing 10 watermelons over the fence so you can create your own demand to sell 3 $6 a piece.

^ lol

joed is onto something good in terms of replacing Varget with RL-15. I worked up accurate and stable 22-250 loads with both powders. A bit of insurance against shortages.

Yep, Varget is from Australia.
And RL-15 is from Sweden.
Go figure.

^^^that would be referred to as a false shortage, which is usually used to give a false sense of scarcity. this increases consumer demand, but the price decrease that usually accompanies an increase in demand never occurs because the consumer thinks the good's value has increase (because they think it's scarce).

different things, but sort of related.
