Was in Wal-Mart today and they had about 10 containers of Varget priced at $27.00 lb (plus tax) and all the rest of Hodgdon powders priced at $23 and some change. Could the Varget be new stock and the rest older stock? I mean Varget is good, but is it worth $4.00 lb over H4350, H4895, H4831 or H4831SC? I just checked an Powder Valley is selling it for $19.75 lb. so I guess I'll need to order my powder online (again). I really try to support local stores but not when they try to gouge me.

But then you pay a hazmat fee that could have been another pound of powder.

This is true, but if I order 8 lbs from Powder Valley, even with shipping costs and hazmat fee, Varget is then reduced to $22.50 lb. It doesn't pay to order 1 lb online, but if you buy in bulk you can save a considerable amount.

I wouldn't call buying from Wal-Mart "supporting your local store" in the least. If anything buying from Wal-Mart is hurting your local stores...

Shipping vs gas. Not haveing to pay sales tax is a added bonus.

I never understood why people want to pay more for less. I can buy a 2 litter of pop for 78 cents but seems most people would rather buy a 20oz for $2. I also prefer to drink water from my well with no chlorine. Even if you did want the chlorine at a buck a bottle you could buy a jug of clorox & mix your own or get city water & it would still be cheaper.

I just restocked on powder this weekend. Think I paid $21 for 1 lb of Varget. I've used it in .308 and .22-250 for awhile and like it. But this time I also picked up 1 lb of RL15 to try. If it works as well I'm done with Varget. There have been times where Varget was scarce around here. So my hopes are on the RL15 replacing it.

I don't shop at Walmart but just a note for all you Walmart haters ""because they sell Chinese"" I saw a video on ABC the other day "" NY, CA & others are having their bridges
built in China--shipped here & installed by Chinese labor. Those same goverment people will scream ""buy American"" --don't you just love this country ////////////////

Congrats on living where you can buy reloading supplies at a WalMart. Most of mine nearby don't even sell ammo.

+1 to be glad walkmart has it at all. I have to buy at gander or nowhere if I want it locally. ($30/lb) none of the few local gun stores have reloading stuff.

I buy most of my hunting and shooting supplies online but when I can buy locally at around the same price I'll buy locally. I'm not a big fan of Wal-mart but I do appreciate that they stock reloading tools and supplies (including books, dies, powder and brass). The way I see it they sell some stuff that I use that is made in the USA and they provide jobs to some that might otherwise may end up on welfare. If my LGS stocked what I need then I would try there first. I've only been back in WV for a couple of months and from what I've seen so far there aren't a lot of options where one can buy reloading supplies locally. I did find a nice Remington 788 in 22-250 at my LGS and several boxes of bullets, but their prices for most items is considerably higher than what I can get at Wal-Mart or online. I can't say that Wal-mart put any LGS's here out of business as there wasn't any here before they came to town. IIRC, we had to buy our guns and ammo from K-mart, Sears and Montgomery Ward before 1970 when I left here to join the Navy.

Hey, thanks for the Dawsons link. That's under two hours from me, and I get over that way periodically. I'll put together a wish list and pick up some stuff next time I'm in the area! Those prices beat anything I can do locally! Best I can find here is $17 for 9 oz. Trail Boss (one store wanted $23), and CCI primers are about $40/K.
