I am a member here for around two years but it has been so long since I logged on, I forgot my name! (Old age plays a role in this also). So now I am Gunny45.
Why are so many of the THR members so high on the 10mm cartridge? What does it have that, say, a .45 ACP or a .357 Mag doesn't have? I love the looks of the DW Razorback and want to own one. Give me some reasons so I can convince myself!
Tom

Iv'e shot one before and it's a fun cartridge to shoot when you want to make a bigger boom, but I like my gentle old .45. Of course, I don't like .357 or .44 mag for shooting a lot either. My limit, I guess.

I like the 10mm round, but I had a problem finding practice ammo so I ended up trading it away. If you reload....it might make a nice addition to your collection ;)

Just ask an anti. They know exactly why anyone who wants a gun would want a bigger one...

I want a 10mm too. For me it is a matter of collecting.

In handgun calibers I have one or more 9mm, .357, .38Spl, .40 S&W, .44 Mag and .45ACP.

10mm and 41 mag are the only mainstream handgun calibers I am missing except .380 and Makarov 9mm. No interest in .32, .25, Tokarov etc.

Take a look at both DW and Kimber offerings in 10mm. Both offerings look to be quality pieces. I am leaning towards the Dan Wesson (especially since CZ owns them now and I am a big CZ fan) since I already have a Kimber.

As others have said 10mm ammo is not all that common and is expensive so reloading is a big help in the money department if you are gonna shoot it a lot. For example I can build full power .44Mag loads with 240gr JSP's for about $5.50 for 50 (save your brass) and imagine that's what it'll cost for 50 10mm vice the store price of $20 and up.

The 10MM has more energy than a .45, can be loaded to exceed .357 mag abilities and is a reloaders dream round.

I like the 10MM cause I can load it to .41 mag energy and have 15 rounds at my disposal. Its a very versitile round and works great as a field carry firearm. The G29 is a great little CCW weapon as well and has 10 rounds.

The 10MM can defeat barriers better than a 9MM and a .45 so its a good defense round if your an LEO or are in a profession where you need that type of firepower.

The downside to the 10MM is the lack of ammo at the local gunshop. You can buy ammo online or reload like the most of us do. Also, the grip is a bit larger and is not friendly to small hands.

I have 9MM, .357, 44 mag and .45's and by far the 10MM is my favorite round. I carry a 1911 for CCW for now but will change over to a G29 when I get rich enough to buy one.

I'd love a 10MM in a 1911 platform but I have too many hobbies and not enough loot to cover them. :(

Did you weed thru the 10MM sticky at the top of the page?

This is the one that always works for me...

Why Not?

Wife says I should retract that statement!

As others have said, the 10 is just fun. It has a completely different feel to it compared to other auto cartridges. It puts lots of energy into a useable sized pistol, unlike the Desert Eagles and such. The only thing that compares is the Coonan pistol. Unfortunately, it is out of production and will likely never be resurrected.

Like others. I was 10mm ignorant for many years. about 5 years ago I went right thru the BS surrounding the cartridge and grabbed up a new Witness 10.

The old wive's tale about the Ten being a kicker are not true. Sure it has some recoil, but not like a snubby .357 with magnum ammo or even some .40s i've shot.

The same could be said for the S&W 1076 that was with me for a while.

Liking the magnum power level and long range accuracy in my fave pistol format:CZ75. The Witness is my outdoors knock-about gun. Plenty of power for animal or predator man defense.

You get a larger/heavier bullet than any 9mm or .357 with near .357 ballistics.
I always wonder WHY people compare them to a .357. The .357
SIG should be compared, not the much superior 10mm, especially with
Double Tap ammo.

Should you own a TEN, then you will know what i'm talking about.
Those of you who don't or criticize it, should really shoot one for yourself.

Why I want a 10MM

1) I am a big Miami Vice fan and Don Johnson had one in the '80s hit, "Miami Vice." He used a Bren Ten, if I am not mistaken.

2) I have a CZ-75B and I love that platform.

3) 10MM is pretty much magnum power for a semi-auto.

The 10MM has more energy than a .45, can be loaded to exceed .357 mag abilities and is a reloaders dream round.

Both loaded to their maximum, .357 mag supercedes 10mm. But standard 10mm is hotter than standard .357 mag. Also, more capacity than .357. In terms of balistic capability, they're almost twins.

The 10 is a versatile round.. You can get rounds that are doing at 100 yds what the venerable .45.. I love the .45 BTW.... is doing at the muzzle.

If you reload, you can load it down to where the 40 S&W peaks out. or you can come up with some real barn burners.

It is flat shooting and you don't need to adjust your sights out to reasonable pistol shooting range.

I have blown up prairie dogs, dropped badgers, coyotes, antelope, cows, and horses with one shot stops.

I got one when the FBI chose it as the best round for their purposes way back when.. They found it too powerful for some to handle, and went to less powerful rounds, I didn't:evil:

2 Razorbacks

Being a DW fan (I own two; DW CBOB .45 & DW 15-2VH pack .357) I will probably get a Razorback if I decide on a 10mm. I do reload my own.
Would 10mm be good for steel silhouette shooting at 100 yards? Currently I use my DW .357 Mag with an 8" barrel.

Thanks for all the input.

Anyone else?

Tom

The old wive's tale about the Ten being a kicker are not true. Sure it has some recoil, but not like a snubby .357 with magnum ammo or even some .40s i've shot.

What he said. The only close-to-full-power 10mm ammo I've put through my Kimber STII is the 175-grain Winchester Silvertip, but it was very manageable, and at about 1240 fps it's quite a formidable round. No doubt Double-Tap-level loadings kick a bit harder, but I ain't skeered. I wouldn't have bought a 10mm if I was afraid of it. :D
Iggy! Beautiful pair o' Razorbacks ya got there! *turns deep shade of green*...

Because at the height of his popularity, Jeff Cooper was promoting this caliber in the Bren Ten....The "bandwagon" effect took hold, but even Mr. Cooper realized the folly of this venture and admitted as such in his last few years....He took a parting shot at this caliber in one of his last "Cooper's Corner", which I'm starting to miss, even with all his philosophical musings...:(

.357 energy, .40 caliber bullet size/weight, what's not to like? I don't own one for one main reason, they're BIG, hard to conceal handguns. For outdoors, I prefer revolvers. If I could get, say, a Ruger P90 in 10, I'd have one in a heartbeat! Better yet would be a P97. The .45 is plenty for defense, though, I reckon.

Would 10mm be good for steel silhouette shooting at 100 yards?

The problem would be finding an auto that would be accurate enough. This is why I prefer revolvers outdoors. But, if you like autos, you don't need the 10 for silhouette shooting. Get a desert eagle in whatever magnum caliber and be happy. You ain't gotta tote or try to hide it, fortunately.

10mm fan here

357 power. With pistols capable of 15+1. Compacts with 10+1. Try that with a revolver.

jeepmor

ps - mcgunner, you mean a S&W 610 for revolver. Not sure on the ruger. But most revolvers with cylinder length can safely be reamed longer, particularly strong rugers.

The P90 Ruger is a semi auto first conceived as a 10mm, but changed during development to the .45ACP. It's not a revolver. It is typically Ruger beefy, though. :D

I prefer magnum revolvers for outdoor use because they are generally significantly more accurate than autos and because I can carry light loads for small game, heavies for bigger game and I don't have to worry about function, changing recoil springs, etc. Revolvers are just better for outdoor use IMHO.

I don't really know. All I do know is that I got a DW Razorback last week, and I love it! It's kind of fun throwing big hunks of lead over 1200 fps. I tried the .400 Cor-Bon barrel in the .45, but never could get it to work right. Haven't had one malfunction in the DW yet. And I do reload and have only used one box of store bought loads, which I promptly used to set my reloading dies with.

Yup The larger one is #25.. One of the original issue.

.Smaller gun is CCO version
Serial Number #25-1

10mm is fun, but not everyone likes the recoil. Nothing wrong with 9x19, if it's what you shoot best. A well placed 9mm is better than a miss with a 10mm. I like to shoot a buddies 10mm every so often, because when I go back to my 45, it feels like a bb gun.
