Will Military Registration haunt me?

I live In military housing through out my career. During that time my weapons had to be registered while living on post. I will retire in the next 45 days and will odds on retire in Texas. My question is, since I had all my weapons atleast registered once. Will it come back to haunt me? I plan on also purchasing a shotgun for home defense (Already found out what I want, FN Auto). I had some budies live off post just because of the weapons registration. I figured no big deal, but I got a feeling the Liberals are going to have control of everything soon:eek:
Any suggestions? Is it okay to say I just got rid of them:rolleyes: ?
Also, Is CCW worth the trouble and effort in Texas? I know it is in El Paso:scrutiny: !!!
 
They usually are just registered with the Provost Marshall.

I wouldn't worry about it. When you leave/retire ask for the paperwork/cards back. Even if they don't return them I think they'll just sit in a drawer till they get pitched in due time.

I have never heard of them doing anything with that paperwork that would concern me.
 
dont know anything about the military side of the house, but in civilian life, Texans do not register their weapons with anybody unless it is a Class III weapon.

i'd also advocate getting your Texas CHL, it is valid not only in Texas but 20+ other states. especially living in a border town, you'll probably feel the need to pack.

also remember that you can carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, in plain view or concealed, without any permit.
 
No it won't. When you move out of base housing go to the Security forces office and request your registration form. They are required to return it to you and then you can destroy it.
 
What do you mean "haunt you"?

Are you talking about getting on "Their List"? Are you worried about your door being kicked in on the "Day of Confiscation"?

If so "they" are going to know you own guns whether they were registered while in service or not. "They" are probably watching this forum (so signing up here is worth at least 3 or 4 4473s).
 
yeah, just get your registration cards back. and yes it is very worthwhile to get a ccw here in Texas. Most officers here will actually give you props for having one.
 
BTW, which branch are you retiring from? I've got 21 yrs in the Air Force and still going strong. I plan on punching out in Oct of 08.

Not really much chance of that. The people who seemed to have done the best in the election are progun Democrats and I don't see anyone really going after firearm rights. Its Bush and Cheney and their hatred of military firearms you have to watch out for. They already had the barrels banned from kits and they stated many times how they wanted none sporting firearms banned, their support of the awb and so on. If anything firearms are more safe now than before since there are very few in the congress or senate who want to do anything to gun ownership no matter the fearmongering we hear often from the NRA that do it mainly for registration since thats how they make their money.

Your forms will be destroyed or you can take them with you from the base and its just a way to keep records of whats on base and whats not.
 
When I was clearing post at Ft Huachuca in 1989 had to go to the PMO where I had about 15 firearms registered on post. The MP at the desk went to the file, pulled out the registration cards, and asked me if I wanted them. I said no and he shredded them.
 
Welcome to the Lone Star State. As you know, there's lots of military folks here--active duty, reserve forces, retirees, and DoD civilians and retirees--so at least some of the time, you'll be able to talk in acronyms.
I can't overstate the value of a Texas CHL either. One of the smartest things I ever did.
Also have to plug the Texas State Rifle Association (www.tsra.com). They have a very active lobbying group in Austin for RKBA issues and it doesn't hurt that Gov. Perry has been very supportive of TSRA-supported legislation.
 
Side question, are you really staying the El Paso area after retirement? I was stationed at Bliss for a while. While the geography isn't too bad, I did not like the town.

I lived at McGreggor Range and worked at Dona Ana as the Training NCO for A Btry.
 
This is slightly off topic but I am not sure what makes you think your rights to guns will errod even further under Dem controlled Washington?

Do you know, there is not a single difference as to who is in the office as far as your gun rights goes? It's been the case after case that Liberals and Conservatives they all have contributed to errosion of constitutional rights.

I am not just talking about gun rights. Under conservative reign, your privacy rights has been stripped to nothing. Under conservative controlled house and senate, all kinds of domestic survallence laws has been passed without due processes.

Your very own government doesn't want you to have a gun period! Bush Administration or Clinton Administration, they all work for the same guy. Blame accordlingly.

2nd Amandment gives you and I rights to weapons grade same as current military could posses but by legislations passed during both conservative and liberal control we are told what we can have and what we can't.

What is so bad about FN P90 and P190 bullets other than the fact that civilians can arm themselves to fight any tyrant government? That is exactly what they are afraid of.

I am sick of hearing people bitching at only one side for the blame for current state of our constitutional rights. Stop watching Fox News please.

I don't think it will haunt you, but you may be surprised to find out who the PMO shared the information with.

When I commanded at Ft Riley back in 93 we had one of the usual annual "safety day" training events down in our BN motor pool. There was a rep from the Junction City police department doing the "safe weapons storage" pitch. Low and behold he had a computerized copy of the Ft. Riley weapons registrations that our PMO was kind enough to share with them.

At Ft Bragg it's all in a database that God only knows which of the 3 letter .gov agency has access to. Is it ever purged? Who knows...

Lucky for me Bragg changed it's regs that required EVERYONE that brought a weapon on base to shoot at the POW range to only those living on Bragg are required to now. If I or anyone else that lives off base wants to use the range you just drive straight there and go straight off base when you are done. Of course the weapon must be unloaded and you cannot be carrying your CCW on you.
 
If you ever bought a firearm from a dealer, you're already on a list. All those ATF forms is defacto registration. Those forms are how the ATF knew who had purchased a .223 when those criminals were shooting up the D.C. area.
I wouldn't worry about the meatheads though. I doubt they have the space to store every bit of paper they fill in. In any case, once you're posted or retired, they're not interested in you or your stuff.
 
Sunray, the 4473 forms are maintained by the dealer. The way ATFE traced the DC sniper rifle (as all guns) was from the manufacturer, to distributor, to dealer who got the purchaser's name from the 4473.
