How does Winchester Silver Tip Hollow Point bullets fare for ammo? I know it's not a common brand of the Winchester line but I'm considering buying it for my 9mm. Feedback appreciated.

It shoots VERY well in my Glock 19s. So that is my carry load. I also tend to try Silver Tips in any other guns which I may use for self-defense. I use 165 grain Silver Tips in my Lightweight Commander and 200 grain Silver Tips in my S&W Model 24. I find that Silver Tips seem to be more uniformly accurate across the caliber spectrum than anything else to include Federal Personal Defense ammo.

As the man said, your mileage may vary. But I suggest that you try them. I think that you can find them at Cheaper Than Dirt and Midway.

I have had great luck with silvertips--
Accurate and reliable--good expansion--
Though I found the WW SXT to be a better performing bullet--

When I was the Dept Range officer we used these in 38 and 357--

It seems to work fine in .45, 10mm & .38 Super - I haven't tried it yet in 9mm:D

I'm sure you've heard this rule before, but whatever ammo you select for a defensive gun, you should fire it a couple hundred times before assuming it is reliable enough to trust for defense. Any malfunctions in 200 shots - try different ammo.

The Winchester USA 9mm hollow point is a Silvertip without the silver coating and is functionally identical for less than half the price. Good stuff in wither flavor.

I got good accuracy with 9MM Silvertips but when I tried the USA white box the accuracy was indeed poor. I do not doubt that the bullet is identical but for color. You might want to check<ammolab.com> for their scientific results on expansion.
I did have a problem with fmj white box Winchester. I was shooting at gallon water jugs out at the range and I got splattered in the face with particles. I think it was gunpowder. I couldn't find the case so i don't know. There was no damage to gun, shooter or polycarbonate safety glasses. It may have fired out of battery.

I use the silvertip in 45 colt in my mountain gun,it's very accurate and recoil is mild.I believe the 9mm silvertip uses a alloy jacket and the usa hp has a copper jacket.

I found that my bore was much more difficult to clean after shooting the aluminum-jacketed Silvertips.

I believe that most bore-cleaning solvents are formulated to remove copper jacketing material, and not aluminum.

Silvertips have been around for a long time. I first used them in my duty revolver, S&W mod 66, and can testify that they are excellent at dispatching wounded animals ( car crashes) I tried other "wonder bullets" such as the Black Talon and never saw any improvement over the Silvertip, Besides you can never tell when you might have to take on a werewolf.
