Your favorite S&W 357?

Ever hear of a Model 68 in .357?

I've got one. Yes, a Model 68 in .357. It was my very first revolver. I hardly ever see anything about the Model 68s, but what little there is says they are all .38 Specials, yet here it is in my hand, and it's just perfect. No it's not a 681.

the original M-68 was put together for the CHP (California Highway Patrol) which mandated that they be issed a 6" .38 spl. their issue ammo was the 110gr +P+ Treasury Load...giving them .357mag performance while still being able to say they issued .38 spl

at that time the M-66 was only available to the public with the 2.5" and 4" barrrels. the barrel of the M-68 was identical in profile to the M-66 except it was longer. the following year, S&W offered the 6" tube on the M-66.

did your M-68 come from the factory with the .357mag cylinder?

I'm partial to a 6" model 28. Maybe because it was a gift from my dad and growing up that's the gun we always "finished" the day with. I agree the model 19 more or less represents the standard for a lot of people, and I have one and love it...but there's just something about the way a 6" N frame spits magnums. For me, that's pretty much the ultimate in shooting. Perfect combo of power and control.

Model 27, I have two a 3 1/2" and a 6". It and it's predecessor the ".357 Magnum" are the best .357 revolvers ever made.

Runner up is the 3" Model 13/65. It's one of the best concealed carry revolvers ever made. I don't like stainless, but I haven't seen a Model 13 at a show in something like ten years, so I settled for the 65.

Hard decision as which is my favorite :scrutiny: I think my 627-PC "Blood Work" gun from the S&W Performance Center is my favorite...at least today.

Advertised by S&W as the Ultimate Defensive Revolver 302 of these were made. Originally came with Eagle grips, replaced with Craig Spegel black walnut.

i'm surprised you didn't hold out for an original lenght 6.5".

i thought it was interesting that their original barrel lenghts (rather than the more common 4" and 6") were determined by the factory's limitation to only make 1.5" cuts

A 6 shot, 6 inch 686 Pro-Port (or was it Power-Port?) from the mid '90s is my favorite S&W. Big, but very accurate with a near perfect trigger. Feel like the world's luckiest guy when I shoot it.

My 4" 586 from the same period is prettier but she has a lying heart. Won't put 'em where she says she will. This in spite of therapy.

Like Walkalong, I too am very fond of my 4" Security Six.

I'm not sure it's fair (or possible) to pick just one favorite S&W 357 revolver. It's probably just a coincidence I have one of each of these.
My favorite small frame would be a 66 in 3" or 4".
My favorite medium frame would be a 586 in 4".
My favorite large frame would be a PC627 5".

I have a few, right now my favorite is a Sc/S ... scandium frame at 21 ounces, 2.5" barrel, Ion Bond finish. I like to feel my magnum loads, the bigger guns just soak it up. This one is nice a light, but a full size grip that just melts in my hand. And I swear it'll do sub 1" groups at 25 yards with my SWC handloads. The Ion Bond looks killer on the gun too.

That 627 PC "Blood Work" posted above is just filthy hot though! I'd love to add one of those to the collection.

Picked it up several years ago -- my S&W mod 19-2 -- no pics, but believe me, she's a beaut! and not to be forgotten, my circa
69 blue Colt Python

Once you hold one then fire it, you'll never look back at K frames again.:neener:
O, btw, to the poster who replied "my security six" to the question of favorite S&W 357, that's a Ruger.:scrutiny: Same for the reply of "Python", that's a Colt.:scrutiny: Just thought you'd like to know.

I like the old school look of the M-27, but I like the 686 for shootin

This bothers me, too. I want to like my 27 more because it's more classic looking and has blue you could swim in, but the fact is the 686 really shoots just as well...

Dang you, S&W, for giving us so many good guns to choose from...

Hmmmm..not really. I owned a 6" 686 for awhile, and thought it to be an excellent shooter, and it was. SA trigger pull was "hair-like" and the DA trigger pull was very smooth. Factory ammo and reloads of medium loading shot great though it. Big boomers were more noticeable. When I got my model 27, it handled ALL reloads with ease, the weight of the gun held it in place, to look at it was beholding a piece of art. Tapered barrel, checkering of topstrap, target grips, deep deep bluing, mine is P&R etc. If I had another 686 in front of me in mint condition, I would still choose the model 27..ultimate in cool.

Also, I'll fix it further for you:
not to be forgotten, my circa 69 royal blue Colt Python, even though it has NOTHING to do with the topic and question asked by OP, I'm gonna put a pic of it in front of your face anyway.

Blasphemy indeed! :what:

"As we all know", no post-1981 S&W is eligible to be called anyone's favourite! ;)
