Just looking for some opinions on your latest decisions and shopping list wants for Kydex stuff. Hit the poll on your opinions...

TIA

I could not get the poll to allow multiple choices.

I'm not sure what you are planning on carrying, but I like my IWB black leather setup from Wild Bills Concealment.

IWB or OWB? Concealment or no? For an IWB concealment holster, I would prefer no light because it severely takes away from comfort (I also prefer leather for IWB carry, it is just more comfortable, IMO). For OWB concealment holster again, no light for me; it makes it slightly harder to conceal. For my holster that I use when open carrying on the farm, then yes, my holster fits my handgun with a light attached.

And you are asking two different questions, this poll would be better set up if you let us pick multiple options.

i.e.
[X] With light
[] Without light

[] Tan
[X] OD Green
[] Black
[] Chocolate Brown

AAH said it already, there are two questions here. The poll is essentially asking "do you walk to school or carry your lunch?"

My preference is IWB, black. Light or no light is dependent upon whether I want a light on the pistol, although you find far more models that are just designed for the stock firearm. If the pistol is small enough, I'll pocket carry.

1st question I dont carry with a light too large a foot print for me.
I prefer Black holsters and leather over Kydex,But I do have several good kydex holsters I some time use with my tupper ware.but my metal guns alway ride in leather.Milt Sparks or UBG Striekers.

No light, black for polymer pistols. brown for 1911s, only use leather for carry pistols. USPSA competition holsters all black, all Bladetech. No thumb break, all strong side, single matching mag pouch, weak side, or just a mag in back pocket.

Black, leather, right-hand, canted, OWB. Now that is a holster.

With or without a light depends on the gun and how I use it. I often have one of each for certain guns.

As to color, I don't really care. It just so happens my Kydex holsters are all black.

What I care a lot more about is how the holster fits and functions. In as much as those are my top concerns I, after experimenting with other brands I was assured were "just as good," only buy Raven Concealment holsters. The others I've used really were not "just as good." Furthermore Raven Concealment has in my experience exceptionally good customer service. My RCS holsers work well IWB, OWB, as IWB tuckable. I can configure any of them to meet any of the needs I personally have, which is very nice and saves money in the end. It also allows a good amount of consistency, which I like.

In sum, I buy what works and what fits my needs. If color factors into that then I'll consider it. Otherwise, its not a purse and my top concern is quality and function.

I use to buy leather holsters for all my guns. Then I discovered kydex. I like the kydex much better.

By far my favorite OWB holster is my Raven Concealment Phantom (Kydex)for my G26/G19/G17. This holster can also be converted to an IWB, and it works well in that posisiton. The only negative is I had to wait 20 weeks to get it. Raven also has excellent customer service. I made a boo-boo trying to modify it to accept my G34 and ended up messing the holster up. I called them and they told me to send it in and they would take care of it at no charge. I decided to research kydex a bit more. Made a make shift kydex press and fixed it myself. Raven now has an express line of holsters for Glocks and 1911s so you dont have to wait as long to get them.

Shortly after falling in love with the Raven, I ordered a similar kydex holster from Double Tap holsters for my Sig P226. It arrived three weeks after my order. The problem with this holster was that it didn't fit my 226. It didn't fit my 228, a friends 226, and a 229 either. I contacted Double Tap and told them about the issue. They said to send it back and they would look at it. I pondered on it a while and decided I felt confident enough with kydex that I would try remoulding it myself. I had just acquired a Walther PPQ and needed a holster, so the Double Tap holster got moulded to my PPQ. It turned out great.

I have also been evaluating a few of the hybrid style (crossbreed/white hat) holsters. These holsters have a leather flap backing with a single layer of kydex moulded to the shape of the gun. They are IWB rigs designed for concealment. The first one I got was a Galco Kingtuk for my Glocks. It is a nice holster and conceals well. I dont think they use kydex, but a similar plastic. The only issue I have with the Kingtuk is that the back side of the leather (part that touches the body) is very smooth (flesh in). It likes to slide down, especially if it is resting on a tucked t shirt. It would be better if it had a soft "Grippy" material applied to the back. Maybe like the foam rubber material found in the bottom of stand up tool box drawers. I dont think that would irritate the skin, but I am unsure if it would be durable enough to last.

I just received a White Hat holsters Maxtuck. What I like about the White Hat is that the kydex portion is exchangeable. Say you have two different guns and your wanting a Maxtuck for both. All you need is a complete holster for pistol A and a kydex section moulded for pistol B. Saves money. I havent had enough time with this holster just yet to give it my blessing, but I have some opinions on it. It appears that White Hat uses a standard pattern on their leather backing for all their holsters. Not a big deal because most pistols have the same general outline. Of course the kydex is moulded to the pistol of your choice and then attached to the leather backing. Just from my short time with this holster, It doesnt appear that they test their holsters with the guns after they are assembled. When I put my pistol into the holster, there was leather and kydex in the way of getting a secure grip on the pistol.

Not a huge deal because i fixed it by removing material with a exacto knife. One thing about the White Hat that looks promising is the flesh of the leather is whats against your body. I think this may help keep the holster from slipping. I may post a better eval later once I get more time with it.

I have been experimenting making my own kydex holsters. I made one Raven style for my Girlfriend's G19. It is about 95% complete at this time. My next project is going to be making a hydrid holster.

I hope this helps.

By with or without light, do you mean a light attached to the gun? I voted for without. Color is strictly personal preference. It only matters to you, because with a concealed holster no one is going to see it anyway. :) Personally, I like black on a plastic holster. Brown is for leather, and I detest OD green (I have a non-THR-suitable nickname for it) as well as "Flat Dark Earth." :barf:

I have no plans to order any holsters at this time, but based upon what I own, I have one concealment-minded holster that works with a light, a Raven Concealment Phantom for my Glock 17 with Surefire X200/X300 attached. This is an OWB holster, as I doubt I would want that much bulk inside my pants.

Color is irrelevant; this is for concealment. I bought my Phantom pre-owned, and it was black because it had been ordered that way by the previous owner.

I have plenty of other kydex and leather holsters that do not work with a light mounted. This does not cause me to lose any sleep, as a light mounted on my weapon is not nearly as important as having at least one good hand-held light; two are better. My favorite hand-held light is the rather expensive Surefire LX2 Lumamax, which I like so much I now have two of them.

I also have a Safariland Duty Holster that works with a light mounted, but I doubt that is on-topic for this discussion.

I stick with two types of holsters for my non revolver carry, a leather IWB and a Kydex OWB. I have a few different variations of the two but these are my favorites...

I'm currently shopping around for a new IWB, probably something in a leather / Kydex hybrid.

Nothing about kydex/leather is off-topic, as far as I'm concerned it is a learning lab for me and all readers alike.

I'm thinking about dabbling into the kydex building, have done some research, and found some bizzare trends that to me as a shooter did not make sense: holster colors is one of them.

Trying not to get stuck in the rut of copying the great folks @ Raven, but also keeping in mind that their customer base REALLY loves them for a reason. I want to think outside the box while keeping the shooters in mind 100%.

Thanks for all your inputs, keep em coming...

Now I see what's going on here...

If you are planning making your own holsters, I think coming up with a unique and functional design that sets you apart from others is the most important factor. Offering colors, logos and other personalizations is a plus but should be secondary.

As for the light factor, I think it's a great product to offer. I personally don't use them but I can't count how many post I read to the effect of "just but a new ----- light but can't find a holster".

Right, I have a great inventory of pistols with rails, a TLR-1 light, pistols w/o rails, and a couple revolvers too. Putting together the needed equipment and finding all the best sources for the best hardware, etc..

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, just have a feeling there's something out there to build beyond " hard as nails" durable, aesthetic, and functional. Lots of ideas but just want to hear from the shooters.

My preference is a holster specifically designed for the gun. I was lucky enough to find a Bianchi left hand leather holster for my S&W 469, a gun they have not made since '88. The difference was amazing.

Color, material, etc are secondary to a proper fit. Mine is natural tan leather, but I have considered black dye to match my belt.
