I'd have to say that the Glock is the plow horse and BHP is the true work horse of the free world, the rest of the world, I can not say.

Jim

The OP used the word "workhorse" so I have to go Glock.

Those polymer-shell mags are so dent & rust-resistant that I can't imagine picking any of the others as a workhorse.

Glock has consistently shown over 1/3 of votes. That is a big number considering the like of USP SIG and CZs are in the race.

Is price afactor in low number of votes for Tacops and USP?
Not for me. I'll spend more than that on ammo. I just shoot others better, and shooting others more so than those two.

And the absolute heaviest

I will never understand where this misconception comes from.

My 5906, loaded with fifteen 115 gr. JHP's, is 42.9 ounces

My Beretta 92 FS with fifteen 115 gr. JHP's is 40.1 ounces

My Baby Eagle with fifteen 115 gr. JHP's is 45.9 ounces

A loaded sig P226 is 40 ounces

Any fully loaded 1911 is roughly 42-46 ounces.

The difference between the 5906 and other metal framed guns of similar size is peanuts.

This same stigma seems to follow the other 3rd gens. But my 4506 is a whopping 3 ounces heavier than my Colt MK IV.

Must just be the solid feel of the guns that creates this illusion :neener:

Browning HP, worked great for my 27 years in the Cdn military and we've had em way longer. The gun's about to be retired and I'd love to get a hold of one...if they sell em.

I know I voted and posted for the Glock17 ..which is definitely a workhorse of the gun world...
I feel kind of guilty and have to give some kudos to the CZ SP-01 Phantom I recently acquired. It is built tough and the pistol's lineage is hard to argue with. Without a doubt this CZ is going to be a workhorse.....and do it with better ergonomics, more capacity and greater inherent accuracy than the Glock17 ;)

How long Phantom has been around. Its a big gun to carry around. I am sure it works well due to CZ engineering.

It's tough to beat the Browning Hi Power. What is Canada using to replace them? The Brits still use them.

They are still used in MANY LEAs around the world. If kept cleaned they can still go for decade or two at least.

I doubt there is a single semi-automatic that has been used in more wars than the Browning Hi Power. To me, that is the finest definition of a work horse. A lot of the other guns listed on here are fantastic weapons, maybe even better than the BHP, but they just don't have the history or track record.

Small parts breakage occurs in all gun designs. Many police armorers have replaced too many glock trigger return springs to count on agency pistols.

One group, the ETF of Toronto Police, were stripping their own Glock 17s, down to the last small bit (not being shown by Glock, the how too!) the trigger return spring has to be refitted, shaped like an S they were twisting them, so each time the trigger was pulled, the spring was stressed, twisted. Hence, they broke a bunch.

The BHP, as used by Canadian Military Police, I became an Ex SAS Officer, over night! In training a group of MPs in Petawawa, to pass the IPSC Black Badge course, so they could compete.

But in order to stay on Base, specifically at the OBQ, I had to be an Officer!

With my Brit accent, one of our students invented my status, SAS Major!
Unbeknown to me!

Now these pistols worked great, still had the Magazine disconnect in them, but the magazines were rubbish! The QM would reform them when the lips opened up! Good for 50 rounds!

I asked if they had others in the QM Stores "Hundreds, in wax paper, cosmolined to death" 8AM Second day, hammer out of trunk, I flattened every one.

The QM went purple, (my mythical status SAS Major protected me)

One hour later, 5 magazines each, washed in a vat of light oil, dried, perfect!
They all passed the shoot test, easy. Got their Black Badges.

Last I heard BHP retired from Service by the Brits, Sigs/Glocks, now.

In 2000? The EL AL, and Consular Staff in Toronto went to Glock 17s.
But with 10 round capacity magazines (an other story there!)

Pilot, I'm just a dumb ATC but I think we're looking at Sigs. Our MPs already use em. Not sure about the model, though.

The CZ 75 75B has legend status and that isn't any joke. Checkout gunblast .com and not to mention cia oper have used them many times over....

What's the source on cia operatives using CZ? I am not sure I agree with this enirely.

The CZ 75 is phenomenal. The beautiful thing is, those of misconception do not know that this $500 masterpiece is indeed issued to LEO oversees, and will serve well. It's a favorite in IPSC comps in my neck of the woods. There's where my vote goes.

Ps...Glocks are tough, but ugly, uncomfortable, and not a horse I'd choose to work with.

I own or have owned almost all of these but still retain a G17 and a few CZ 75's. I voted for the CZ because it is such an awesome shooting gun!
The Glock is easier to detail strip but the CZ is fairly straight forward once you learn it. I haven't worn out either but have no doubt both will handle tens of thousands of rounds.

For me the CZ just shoots so much better and feels so good in the hand.
Plus I do like the option of either DA/SA or cocked and locked.

(do wish magazines were cheaper though :)
