I have one of the DPMS lightweight .338 Federals ... the other round I was considering in a AR-10 platform was a 300 WSM. I like the 338 Federal though, easy to load for, easy to shoot, big bullets and shoots just as flat as a 308 out to any range I'll ever use it for. Shorter bullets means less bearing surface and more case capacity - I can get 100-150fps more vel out of a 338 Federal with the same bullet weight as I can with a 308. It also shoots 225gr bullets well ... and still have 20 in the mag
i think its a safe bet that it would be most folks first caliber for an ar10 platform if it was a hasty decision.
my first choice for a non 308 ar10 would be the 338 federal.
if im not mistaken, its a necked 308 case, and surpasses the parent cartridge in performance. i believe its a 308 length cartridge that approaches the old '06 in terms of pure power.
this was my first sentence in this thread.
