I think it would depend on the range of the offender(s).

900-400 yards, Remington 700 Police .308 w/Leupold 4.5-14 Tactical
400-250 yards, DSA SA-58 .308 Medium Contour
250-40 yards, Bushmaster .223 Dissipator
40-10 yards, Remington 870 12 G. 18"
10-0 yards, HK USP .45

Wardog

I keep everything locked in a fairly large safe, but before bed unlock it to have quick access to a loaded Beretta 92D (15 rounds X2 mags of Federal EFMJ+P).

Altho there's a number of other choices available in there, wanted to keep it simple, and have a gun that my wife is also comfortable operating.

My primary is a S&W 4" N-frame. Right now it's a .45 Colt Mountain Gun with Federal 225gr LHPs. Sometimes it's a 629 with Winchester .44 Spl. 200gr Silvertips.

At various places in the house...
makarov, 1911A1, S&W 12 ga. pump with extension tube, single shot NEF 12 ga.
cut to minimum length allowed by law,
Winchester .22, SKS carbine, Enfield carbine, 2 large dogs and an owner with a lousy attitude.

to start with 80lb Rott and a 45lb lab, although unless its a flock of unruly mallards the lab aint doing much but barkin', after that I have a Mossberg 12 guage with 00 buck for a permanent postion, if I have to move I take my Springfield 1911 loaded with 200 gr flying ashtrays, and 2 spare mags.
I think rifle rounds may be a little to dangerous in the house due to overpenatration, dont want to kill my livestock in the field, but the AR15 is their none the less.

My primary HD gun is my Winchester 1300 backed up by my G17. I have had one bump-in-the-night experience that made me a believer in the intimidation value of a smoothbore being racked at oh-dark-thirty.:what:

Mossberg 590 12ga with #4 for all 9 rounds.

The goal being to keep on blasting ontil all the pieces are the same size or smaller then my hand.

Mossberg 500. 20 inch barrel, full length mag tube, cylinder bore.
Empty chamber, full magazine--5 rounds of Reduced Recoil 00 Buck (If i'm lucky, maybe these will only penetrate 9 walls instead of 10? ) capped off with two reduced recoil 1 oz slugs.
After that, i've got a belt pouch with 35 rounds of 2 3/4 inch 00 Buck (standard power) and 6 winchester Super-X slugs.
I may switch to #4 Buck if i can find a brand that patterns as well as the 00 has so far.

I have a SIG P228 nearby as well, but it is unloaded in the safe. However, i do keep two mags loaded with Winchester Ranger 127g +p+ JHPs by the gun.

No fancy weapon-mounted lights, no barrel porting/compensators/muzzle brakes. I have a Streamlight Scorpion on my bedside table, and a 500,000 candlepower spotlight, though :D

Glock-21, night sights, m-3 light, 200gr P+ speer gold dot.

Bigger work might bring out a 12 ga Remington 870 police magnum, speed feed stock, extended mag, side saddle, tactical sling, with m-3 light.

SDnR ;)

If they get past the guinea-hens,geese and pair of lab's and make it into the house then the 8.5lb ankle biter that can sense every thought of the person just before you can kick it and then move/bite in the same action.

1. GP-100 6" loaded with 145grain Silver-Tip HP's
2. Beretta FP-1201 loaded with 2.75" 1.5oz Lead BB's
3. The wife with her Stoeger coach-gun 20gauge 2.75" #3buckshot
4. And if they make it out of the house, the misses with a DPMS sweet-16 and me with a CEMTE loaded with a mag of 1-Bronze Point,1-Tracer,1-AP!

OK,

One could dicker whether the side arm or the shotgun is primary.

If I could only have one, I will take the shotgun.

The Mossy 590 with nightsights and 9 rounds Win 00 Buck23/4 Magnums. and 5 Remington reduce recoil or tactical slugs.

Under my pillow in the Alessi Talon II is my CCW SIG 228 with a normal capacity magazine (hi-Cap), with 14 Cor-Bon 115+P's.

Now on the bandoleer for the shotgun with a slew of ammo of different configuration, mostly slugs and some buck and just about 4 bb loads. Is my SIG 226 Also with a normal magazine, that means 16 rounds of afore mentioned Cor-Bon. Also on the Bandoleer is an additional 2 'normal' SIG 226 magazines (30 rounds) that will fit/work in either the 228 or 226.

Just an aside, all my hand guns have night sights.

Multiple flash lights at bed side and on bandoleer. And of course Cell phone to call the cavalry.

If I can't get it done with that equipment, I can't get it done.

Mpayne, asked earlier in this thread about a gun under the pillow. Keep it in a holster and I have never found it lumpy.

It has been my Post Viet Nam security thing

HD right now is glock 30 or my 640-1

Go with the g-30 in hand, 640-1 on waist as backup. No reloads or mags will be carried.

If 10+1 .45's, then 5 rds of 125gr 357 don't get it done, the wife will hand me the double SxS coach gun and bandolier.

I just do not see that an event in my home would last long enough to have to go with the SxS.

16 rds total between the two. That should translate to 12 dead immediately and 4 dying enroute sometime in the near future.

The reason for two guns and no reloads-----------

You could have one get the drop on you and have you drop the one in your hand. The second gun is accessed when opportunity knocks. Remember, they just disarmed you and will let their guard down a few seconds once you have been relieved of the one in your hand.

Extra mags for the auto home defense will do you no good once you have dropped the weapon in such a scenario. As well, the fastest reloads for me are a second gun produced if it becomes pratracted and I've run dry on the auto.

Brownie

Brownie, I can see your point about having two houseguns, however I couldnt do it because I dont go to sleep wearing a holster, and cant exactly carry mexican either... I do, however, sleep with a pair of jeans (whatever i wore that night) beside the bed with an extra mag in the weak-side pocket. Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe I could get a Kel-Tec to put in the strong side as well.

edit: Of course, I also have big glass ashtrays that are never moved, as well as a few other non-weapon items throughout the house that can do some serious damage if I lose control of my sidearm.

Primary home defense gun

I voted shotgun (Mossberg 500); but I keep a S&W 642-1 .38 +p on the table beside my bed. In the closet, I have:
S&W M60
S&W M13, 4"
S&W M27, 4"
SW1911
Springfield M1911A1 Mil-Spec
Ruger Mini-14
Colt Mustang Plus II
Colt Cowboy .45 Colt
Browning Buckmark
Beretta Tomcat
Ruger P97DC
Ruger Bearcat
plus some other stuff.

Well, I could only really take one gun when I moved into a tiny apartament in the ghetto...so it's a Sig P225. Simple and quick to operate, perfectly reliable, and small enough to be carried around in case of emeregency.

The most likely emeregency, by the way, would be the local basketball team winning a game and causing the locals to celebrate by overturning cars, looting stores, setting buildings on fire, etc. I hate people.

It depends what you consider primary. I have a gunvault safe near me with a Sig 220 and a Kimber Tactical Custom. I grab one of these to get to my master closet where my Scatterguns Tech 870 Marine Magnum lies.

Some of you guys sleeping with your guns need to consider dating! :D

I digress here but I've never bought in to the "SWAT Team fantasy" that imagines a scenario where a second and third gun will need to be pulled into action. I know guys who never leave the house without beingg strapped with three pieces! When have you even HEARD of a private citizen getting in this kind of scrap?! I say this only in that I was in the gun store the other day and there was this guy in "SWAT regalia" who made a big deal of my friend accidently bumping him a la DeNiro "You talking to me?!" Gives us all a bad image. Maybe I am the one who is in denial or something and I should never go from room to room without carrying but for me it is just either a 686, 1911, or a titanium .38 by the bed with as much thought to it as the fire extinguisher I keep in the home and yes I have read: "Guns Save Lives!" etc. I DO believe in having a gun ready but all over the house?!

Do any of you guys worry that the high powered loads will zip right through your house and into your neighbors? Someone told me that my .38+P's will anyway so "why not use the .357 and don't miss?" Going deaf from the .357? Sorry for going on and on. As you can guess, I am fairly new to this and don't mean to offend anyone-just asking questions.

Of course my Benelli Super 90 M3! Loaded with Federal 000-buckshot.

That combination converts Mr. BG to mince meat!

First off, I have a home alarm system. This is backed up with a 95 lb American Bulldog bitch that sleeps with the wife and I, this is backed up by two safes on my and her nightstand. Mine, Sig 220, Kimber .45, hers, Sig 226, Sig 2340. Fifteen feet away in my master closet, Scattergun tech 870 Marine with 00 buck. If my dog don't get mr. BG, my wife will.
