    to scope or not ?

New England Custom Guns makes a very nice apeture sight that attatches to the rear scope base of the Ruger Rifles. this is a very nice upgrade to the factory irons. monty

10/22 w/ optics. Any issues to be aware of?

it's a good thing optical sights accually perform best when mounted as low over the axis of the bore as possible (without accually touching the barrel). this gets the line of sight closer to the bore and reduces sighting error when shooting at distances other than the exact distance the rifle...

    16" .308s: Feedback

for the sub 600m (in the origional post) the 16" .308 will be fine. this is espicially true if optical sights are not used. not many people will be able to tell the difference from field positions anyway. i've seen some very impressive work by an experienced rifleman with a 16" scout. the...

Newly Single, 40+ female, Home Alone - What Would You Recommend (story)?

a Ruger SP101 with Wolff spring kit (to ensure the double action pull is not too much). have her practice with .38 mid range loads to her hearts content and gradually work up to the .357s. this is what i did for my girlfriend (she was living alone with no weapon in the house when we met). she is...

    For all you motorcycle riders?

i ride a '99 Harley fatboy, and i either just throw something in the saddlebags or carry a small gun IWB at about 11 o'clock. large guns don't fit here well for long rides, and frontal IWB doesn't work for everyone. it is one of the CCW methods that is possible to access with either hand if...

    Remington 673 guide rifle

yep, i have one. good rifle. at the time the only .350 RM i could get for under $1000. Ruger now chambers the M77MKII for .350 RM or i may have considered that one. back to the 673, tho. groups about 1.5" with factory bedding and Timney trigger. (my Remington 600 in .350 RM will do a little...

    Sighting In A Rifle....Opinion?

i have done this a lot, JUST TO ROUGH IN THE SIGHTS. it works well enough to get the group on the paper at 100 yds, but certainly not well enough to use by itself and consider the rifle sighted in. i suggest to try it, then shoot at 100. you will almost certainly need to adjust the sights some...

Red dot vs. Tritium for low light shooting?

there are advantages to both. with the tritium sights, you don't have to turn them on, and you can find your gun in total darkness (those three little green dots are a real comfort on the nightstand). so for a handgun i'd prefer the night sights for a primary weapon. but for a rifle/carbine...

Speaking of folding stocks - Ruger10/22?

i like my butler creek folder!!! i have an AMT Lightning (Ruger 10/22 clone) that came new in a Butler Creek folder. it is a better stock than it looks like it should be. there is no slop in either the open or closed position, and when closed, the gun is a small and light package to transport...

    Opinions on Remington Model 7

i have a 673 (model 7 with some fluff) in .350. that's the gun i grab when things might go south. great accuracy and really tips things over. monty

    Turner 1907 Sling

that is about what other premium slings go for. Brownell's has some nice ones (some for more than that), but i like the turner stuff too. the tan ones will turn brown with age and some boot grease (helps to waterproof it also) that's not a bad deal. it's more than a lot of slings cost, but...

    Your dad's rifle

my dad's "loaner" gun (that i borrowed a lot) was a M94 Swedish mauser carbine that had been lightly bubbasized (shortned stock and reciever sight). i still have this gun and it ranks among my favorites. monty

red dot or "scout" scope for a 45/70?

the Aimpoint #10583 i just ordered the 2X aimpoint with 2MOA dot for scout duty. a little more money, but the 2X and 2MOA dot seems tobe the best of both worlds. (magnification and a smaller dot for a little precision). there is also the double battery cap that extends battery life. this is in...

Help me build my Remington 700

another thought is a model 70 style three position safety from New Engleand Custom Guns or David Gentry. NECG also has many sights if back-up irons are wanted. (i went with Warne rings and mounts with a NECG peep that fits on the weaver style rear mount, and a banded front sight). the bolt...

first precision rifle- Win. 70 Stealth II vs Rem. 700 PSS vs FN PBR vs Tikka T3

i have and use both Remingtons and Winchesters and my personal feeling is that the Winchester is better than the Remington in some respects (the safety the trigger, and the one piece bolt/handle) but the Remingtons just might shoot tighter groups. for everything but bench resting they are...

    Help choosing 1,000 yard cartridge

i kinda like the .264 Win Mag for long distance work. sure it has a short case neck and has a reputation as a barrel burner, but if you find one that likes the 140 SMK the barrel life with the these heavier bullets isn't that bad. 2,000 rounds is possible WITH heavy bullets. if ya plug in this...

    Bear Question

when i was a kid i had a scuffle with a 450# blackie at spitting distance. my gun (the only one i owned at the time) was a .243, and i have to say that it wasn't nearly enough. now i have a Remington Marine 870 for this work. the best thing to do is follow all of the guidelines like keep food...

    Dedicated .22 long rifle optics?

Leupold also makes an extended focus range range scope that i have on my 10/22T. it has an adjustable objective and will allow focusing as close as fifteen feet. this is handy at times when the vermin gets close. it is a compact scope and is variable (3-9X). great scope for a rimfire. monty
