I know this is highly subjective, but if you had to pick one company to rule the roost, who would it be?

I came to my decision based on several factors. They had to have a firearm available in every major category that was competitive with the competition, and I also used affordability in my decision as well as warranty and customer service. Sure, Wilson Combat might make the "best" 1911, but their prices keep them away from the average citizens hands.

My pick.

Ruger

I mean, they cover pretty much every category with a solid offering and I am finding them multiplying in my collection.

So I ask you, who's your overall pick?

Ruger doesn't make a shotgun that I know any more. For an all category manufacturer in US you would have to go with the new management at Big Green--Remington, they make auto pistols, rimfire rifles, high powered rifles, black rifles, shotguns. They own Marlin lever actions They have lifetime warranties on many of their guns ALL ARE AMERICAN MADE!!

That's a great point. Totally forgot about shotguns.

I gotta go with Ruger overall as well...

...Never had a bad firearm from them, they have great prices, good performance, and excellent customer service. Don't forget about American made

I also think FN Herstal is a good one too... from handguns to rifles to shotguns to .mil stuff, they have it covered with quality. Plus they have Winchester and Browning as well.

I agree with your opinion on Ruger. While I am a believer in the Glock, the SR series would fit the bill if I had to go with 1 manufacturer. I can say the same about the Remington 700- but there's always the American and the precision rifle. They eve make 1911's. To me, there is no substitute for the 10-22 and their excellent selection of 22 pistols. The only problem would be in the shotgun area....

While they may not be the best in every category, I would have to say Ruger. With the notable exception of shotguns, Ruger offers pretty much everything a person would need at a good price and excellent customer service.
AR15's
Hunting rifles
Single, double action, and semiauto handguns in 22lr.
Concealed carry revolvers
Concealed carry auto's.
1911
Big bore revolvers in SA and DA
A variety of semiautos

Ruger came to my mind as well before I even opened the thread. But that is a point about not offering a shotgun. The rest of their product line, though, does include pretty much "something for anyone."

HK without a doubt. From P7 and p9s to the USP line with all the trigger variants to the P series et al and the VP series with compacts coming up so......all top shelf firearms. PLUS customer service that is stellar and second to none!!! HK. Prices are reasonable and used HK firearms hold their value well into the future. HK!

I would have to say CZ. They're an excellent value, and they have quite a range of options. Beretta might be a close second. Not as good a value as CZ, but you can trust their guns' quality and they have quite the lineup in their own right. In either case, I could outfit all my self defense and hunting needs from either company, trust the quality, and not feel like I got swindled in the process.

All-around is a tough one for me.

For current production:
Revolvers, Ruger
Semi-auto handguns, Sig Sauer
Bolt-action rifles, Savage
Shotguns, Browning

If I had to pick just one for everything it'd have to be Ruger, I can always find a used or NOS Red Label around somewhere.

I like revolvers as you can see . I think I have 11 , 3 are Rugers , but Remington does make a pistol and the 1911 is one of my favorites . Ruger does not make a shotgun , so they cannot be consider if you hunt birds or rabbits or even deer in the county I hunt in .

Seen HK mentioned a couple times, they seem to have a pretty narrow product line (at least for civilians). Not to mention the price.

I was really surprised by that as well. Their product line is more than narrow, and honestly if not for the German government I don't think they would be in business anymore. I can't think of any weapon they've ever made that wasn't inferior to something else already on the market for less money, possibly with the exception of the MP5. I guess the P7 was innovative, but I would argue that it was an answer to a question no one asked, as evidenced by the fact that you hardly ever see them. Probably their most iconic gun was the PSG1, and that thing was a monstrosity. The G36 looks cool as hell, but they reportedly started melting down as soon as the Germans got into actual combat in the WOT. And here lately their claim to fame is an overpriced piston AR15 and an equally overpriced striker fired plastic fantastic that were both, IMHO, completely superfluous and unnecessary.

And I could forgive them for all that if they just weren't so danged arrogant! I don't know, I just think HK is way overrated, and even more overpriced.

Is there any one company that makes pistols, revolvers, bolt guns, MSRs, and shotguns? Those are the major categories, in my mind.

Can't think of any company that covers all those bases. Even if Remington did (they don't), I still wouldn't vote for em. Pushing out a load of crap in every category doesn't make you the best. Seems like an exercise in futility. What's the competition?

Looking at it from a different angle - what's the best all around gun company, in the sense of having a varied product line, with quality products, and helpful/polite/timely customer service - I'd have to say Ruger. I think everyone would. Almost nobody beats the diversity of their line. And while none of their products might be called best in class, they're known to be dependable, workhorse type guns. And when they falter, Ruger has a reputation of making it right without hassling you; in some cases, even when it was the owner's fault. And their whole line is made here in the states. That's worth points too, IMO.

Let's recap:

1. They do more than anyone else.
2. They do it all at least fairly well.
3. When they mess up, they fix it.
4. They do it all here at home.
5. They do it all for reasonable cost.

What more could you want? Maybe I need to actually buy a Ruger... never owned one yet.

That's an extremely good question. Ruger has a very wide -- perhaps the widest product line. It's very opportune to exploit designs that start elsewhere and it's shrewd at setting pricing -- it wrings every dollar out of 10/22 sales for example, while being very competitive with its American series of firearms. Ruger's product quality is OK, but nothing to scream about.

If I was forced to pick a single company, I might choose Ruger too. On the other hand Ruger doesn't make my overall favorite firearm from a single category from an affordable, non-esoteric maker:

Bolt action rifles: Remington.

Shotguns: Remington.

ARs: Daniel Defense

Revolvers: S&W

Pistols: Glock

Rimfire pistols: Browning.

Rimfire rifles: Remington

But if I could only buy from a single company for all by needs? FN Herstal and its subsidiaries.
