CMP M1 Garand Service Grade

After reading all the post and threads on this and other forums I can also say I have all my paperwork in order to order a Garand. I will order a H&R just for the later production and hopefully minimal use. The next one could be a SA for historical purpose's. I have to agree with 1KPerDay that all rifles from the CMP will not look as good as sappnasty delivered. sappnasty has some fine garands and he went and hand picked them. Something some of us can not do easily. Well Monday the order will be in the mail and will see what comes.

A side note any difference between the hxp ammo in enbloc or the loose? price and rounds per $ amount are close. thx deadeye
The ammo can of 200 rounds mixed I got the other day was a mix of Greek HXP from the 1960s-1980s, along with a lot of Winchester rounds dated 1956-1957. It was all shiny and clean, though, with no tarnish or corrosion evident. Also, 204 rounds in the can.
I haven't had a chance to try the WRA stuff to see how it compares, but the HXP has proven to be very accurate.

Service Grade & Greek Ball in spam can

I was finally able to spend some time on the range today with my Service Grade HRA. I do not have anything to measure bore wear with or other high tech devices, but I can tell you that I have been nothing but impressed and pleased with the service and attitude of the CMP personnel.

Attached also is a photo of the shot grouping (yes, there are 8 there, count them!) using the Greek HXP in spam can. By the numbers on the can I'm guessing it is 1974 vintage. If only I can come up with a hanload recipe for the old girl that performs equally well I'll be happy.

I'm a satisfied CMP customer.

Here's a target that I shot recently with my HRA, with a LMR barrel.

HRATarget.jpg

Now before you ask, this is the internet, so it was shot at 1000 yards, at night, and during a sandstorm. I had just stepped on my glasses, and while bending over to pick them up, I bumped my old M1, and it went off, sending the first round through the target dead center. :D

Busted!!

OK, you caught me! Nobody told me I had to be entirely truthful and forthcoming here. The group photo'd was only at 50 yds, but the point was that the Service Grade HRA, even with Greek MIL SURP ammo can put a reliable group on the target. With a better driver behind the trigger it can still punch paper with a dense pattern even at the unheard of distance of 100 yds and beyond. Besides, I'm old, it was really, really cold and my eyes aren't that good and..................

Hey-I'd be perfectly happy with that group from a 60 year milsurp rifle shooting 35 year old milsurp ammo! I hope mine shoots that well. Thanks for sharing.

Now, as for CZ's 1000 yd. group.....:what::p

At 540 yds. with 1967 HXP, 19clicks from bottom I usually hit a 11" gong once or twice with a 8 rd. enbloc...thats open sights, bench rest. I wouldn't believe it either if I hadn't had witnesses...an they couldn't believe it either!!! Its got a nice dirt background behind it, you can barely see the target with the naked eye, so the trick is aiming for the center of the dirt where its at...I even have time to look real quick after I shoot, an see it move, or dirt fly up close to it...if I hit it, you see it fly up or swing around good, then a distant "ding" in the air....so cool...with the scoped AR I hit about 70%, seems I have more time to look for a hit, the "ding" isn't as crisp, an the gong just barely moves. The Garand is a remarkable rifle...I love them.

During basic training in 1961, we had to qualify on the M1 Garand at 100 yds in the standing, kneeling and prone positions. I was very impressed with the accuracy of the rifle. It was the only part of basic training that I enjoyed! Drilling with that heavy piece of equipment for hours on end, on the other hand, was not so much fun.

I just sent my paperwork in last week for a SA Service grade. Hopefully its here quick, if I pace any more I'm going to wear the carpet out.

Spend your time reading everything you can about the Garand. Surf the CMP forums, a bunch of M1 info there. Consider finding a part time job, because no matter how much ammo you ordered with your rifle..........it won't be enough. :D

I started looking these last few days and I am already overwhelmed with the information out there. Here I thought it was going to be a simple fun rifle, boy was I wrong. Even reloading for it is on a whole different level. Maybe I can talk my wife into asking for a promotion or raise to support my habbit

You might also consider selling blood or that un-necessary body part, because Garands tend to multiply. Especially when you find out how much fun they are to shoot at l o n g range. ;)

I might be in luck, the range I belong to only goes to 200 yards. But, I would never turn down the chance to test my skill past that... My wife on the other might be a little skeptical of another membership to a different range.

Double Vision could you or anyone else give a time line as to when you mailed your order to when you where notified they received your order order to when it was shipped. Lot of to's in that sentence. I'm on day 10 after mailing and check e-mail every 15 min. Patently waiting.deadeye

Between 30 and 60 days seems to be how the orders for rifles are running right now. Ammo by itself seems to ship a bit faster, say within a month. Check the Forums on ODCMP.com and look for the order threads.

Deadeye, I priority mailed my package to CMP and it was received by them on 1-31-11. Received an email acknowledgement on 2-7-11. They indicated it would take 30-60 days.

From 2-7-11 I also checked my email every 15 minutes until the blessed event today with the shipping notice! :p That's just over 30 days, not a bad turn-around time.

I can't wait to meet my new-to-me rifle. :)

On 2-8-11 I also ordered CMP ammo and hope it'll get shipped shortly.
