I often feel guilty lately when I buy things that aren't related to firearms. I tend to think: "I really want to get this for my other hobby, but think of all the ammo/gear/guns/ I could get if I put that same money towards guns."

My favorite is when I compare the price of something to how many bricks of Pre-Panic .22lr I could get for the same amount of money.

Tell me THR, do you do this?

NOTE: I say luxury items because I put firearms into my luxury category. I won't spend money on guns or gun related items unless all other needs are met within my household.

I can't afford other hobbies!

I feel guilty going out to eat when I could have spent that money on ammo.

I know where you're coming from. I haven't played golf in nearly 2 years because it got to the point where every time I played I was like, "Damn. I could have bought 1k primers or a bucket of wheelweights with that money."

LOL Ron.... Man yea i feel guilty..i have 3 kids a wife and we need all kinds of things besides guns and ammo! Has that stopped me? Sadly, not so far

Ha, no.

I live in the United States. Everything around me, everything I can actually buy, is an absurd luxury compared to my true needs. A drink at a typical restaurant... The smallest cheapest drink they sell...costs as much as about half the world's population lives on per day... And, knowing that, I still eat at restaurants all the time. I enjoy it...which in turn means I work 45ish weeks a year instead of the one week it would take me to earn the median per capita income if you look at the whole population of Earth. I earn my luxuries by being able to generate tremendous value compared to most people on the planet, and being willing to generate that value far longer than is absolutely necessary for my survival. In other words, i'm giving up my one irreplaceable asset - the seconds of my life - for that luxury.

No way i'm feeling guilty about something that costs me so much.

Maybe I should change guilty to: "Think the money would be better spent on gun related items." :D

even with that change to the terms, no.

I do sigh when an emergency pops up and I have to spend a bunch of money on necessities I had been saving for luxuries. Most of us do though.

I don't feel guilty about it, but I certainly do weigh the cost in terms of ammunition and range time...

No, I have other genuine interests (perhaps too many ;)), as well, and only buy what I really want for all of them--I'm definitely more into learning than consumerism. In addition, balance and variety are good things to have in one's life--I'm not trying to preach here, it's just my view.

No. There are no luxury items other than going out to eat, now and then a movie.
About fifteen years ago I wanted to own my first canoe, but did not see any way to easily get the canoe up a river's slow current to the car's location. Etc, etc.

The only serious regrets/guilt are from not being interested in guns ten or more years ago, when many more types of surplus ammo were both easily available and really cheap.

My only other hobby being trapping ,
I sometimes feel "buyers remorse" not guilt when I invest $44 in a single coyote trap

But it all disappears the moment I walk up to the set on a cold December morning and hear the chains clanging in the pre-dawn darkness, and affix my light on the set to see a large predator securely held within its grip

Then my only thought is "I wonder if I could have called in to shooting range"

...yea it really hurts when you shell out $225 for an 12v elec grease gun. I really would rather have a 'real' gun.

same thing on the air nail guns and air staplers.

however, ....shooting oneself in the hand with a nailgun is much more acceptable than with a real gun. (been there, done that).

No. I love shooting and competing and I carry a gun for a living, I'm around them all the time and have a small collection of interesting custom pieces built by famous gunsmiths, but there's more to life than just that one hobby. In addition to our regular cars, we've got a classic car and a sports car for fun, we like going to car shows, rides in the country, out to dinner and movies, concerts, the occasional play. We are also into cooking and enjoy trying new foods and recipes. Like they say, variety is the spice of life, don't short yourself, there's way too much fun stuff in the world in addition to guns to limit yourself to just that one hobby.

Since I spent all my money on my firearms hobby, other 'luxury' items hold no temptation.

I do constantly find myself evaluating a simple optional purchase by calculating how many rounds of ammo I could buy or reload for the same amount of money. That tends to help me make my own coffee or drink a beer at home, as opposed to going 'out' to spend money on those things.

No. Guns are not my only interest, an important one but not my only.
I agree with our friend Griz22: I have many other interests. I have a nice collection of firearms and I enjoy shooting them, but this is not my all consuming passion.

My lady and I have 3 daughters, between us. I prefer to see my ladies taken care of, so I put very little toward personal luxuries or hobby spending for me. What little I play with goes toward shooting. Ammunition, more mags, holsters... I have an easy time finding things to throw money at.

I don't feel like I need more interests. My lady is my best friend, and I love spending time with her and the girls. If I get 1 day to sneak away to the range with a buddy, I feel balanced. If I had more time and money, I'd shoot twice each week :)
