The Howa mini-action series now has options in 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel. Definitely competition for the CZ mini actions as they're in the same price range.

I have a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 and a Howa (Weatherby) short action in 308. My CZ is prettier than the Howa and has CRF, which I prefer (I like being able to gently eject empties at the range). My Howa is more accurate than my CZ and the Howa's two-stage trigger is a little better in my opinion (both are very good, but I prefer two stage triggers).

I like short LOPs, so the CZ youth carbine is the clear choice for me. I won't consider the Howa mini until a youth stock is available and a magazine that doesn't look ridiculous is available.
 
Looks like a great youth gun or stalking rifle. The 7.62 x39 is a great addition for caliber compatability.

LOVE the short stroke and it shoots !
Working on load development now. Appears to like 68 and 75's better then 55's. Five shot 100 yd groups running .6" for 68's, .7" for 75's and 1.1" for 55's
Not a fan of the mag release. If you're not careful and slide your hand back you can release the mag. It does make a great offhand rest though. Been debating getting the original bottom metal and removing the mag. They do make magazine conversion kits for the older rifles so bottom metal should be available somewhere.

Can anyone speak to the quality of the stock and bottom metal components compared to CZ's 527 (I think) offerings?

That's interesting. I haven't done any load development with anything other than 55 grn for mine. I'll have to try some 68's. I'm beginning to dislike that magazine hugely but I can put up with it. The trigger is the bright spot however. I much prefer two stage to anything else available in that price range.

I'm actually thinking about buying another one in 6.5 Grendel. Have to sell a shotgun first tho cause the safe is full. :(

I purchased mine from Cabelas when they closed them out. $348 including a .09 state sales tax. Not sure what the street price is.

I just checked Bud's, they are running about $250.00 - 300.00 more than that for various models of the 527. If the Howa were up in the $600.00 - 650.00 range, then I know I'd buy the CZ without even thinking about the Howa.

Agreed also on mag release, as mentioned above easy to bump accidently. Temporary added a bump stop on mine.

I second this. Sticking to specifications is always a good idea, regardless of how much it might impact some reloaders who can't be bothered to find .311 bullets and just want to use more common .308 ones instead. As far as the rifle is concerned, this got me thinking, as I've been looking at CZ lately and Howa seems like a real alternative.
 
I got mine for the $348 close out price and had a $25 off coupon.
$323 plus tax, couldn't pass it up.
Actually got the tip off this site. :thumbup:
