So what do you guys think of the 22 magnum as a deer killer ?
In a rifle, in the eyeball, at 35 yards it would still be better than a 9mm out of a pistol at 100 yrs.

They kill elephants every day at 1/2 km with worn out AK's shooting FMJ..... But that still don't make it ethical.

My stepbrother killed his first 4 deer with a 22mag rifle. He said they didn't even know they had been shot and 3 dropped right next to where he shot them, the one ran to the tree line "about 50 feet" looking back at my step brother trying to figure out what happened, then dropped. Now he uses a 30-06 and says it seems like every single one runs at least 100yds.
All were shot 50 to 100 yards with the 22mag and were normal small deer in the back yard of the family home or about at what I would call 9mm range.

How did he get them penned up?

Might as well have been in a pen as they were in the less than 1 acre back yard with a big old apple tree growing in the middle of the yard. We like to say it's the deadliest apple tree in the state of maine.
He was just doing what he could with what he had.

Humanity of hunting is to not let the animals suffer. We owe it to them

OP should have asked the question over in the SA pistol forum.

The 124gr +P load with either the Hornady XTP or Speer GoldDots have proven to be well capable of dropping deer.
Even a deceased revered moderator here acknowledged taking deer with a Browning HiPower.
Shot placement X3...
The 147gr loads tend to lose velocity in the longer carbine.

Now 22 magnum is great for deer?

Maybe it's a cultural difference, maybe when he says "deer" what it really is is "rabbit"

Worthwhile to note that unless it was a really really narrow an acre backyard isn't really getting you 100yd shots

I have killed a lot of hogs with 9mm (coyotes too) and even .22 LR, most all of them were in traps or at close ranges.

I wouldn’t set out to hunt deer with either though, either could kill one but I have never had the stuff I do use kill one too dead.

In a set of headlights, they work just fine.
I have never used one , but I do know folks that swear by it for putting meat on the platter year round . Who am I to judge ? I have been to the slaughter house . A calf hanging upside down waiting to get the knife probably dies a more horrible death than a deer with a bullet in the eye.

22 Magnum has killed a lot of deer around here. People use the 22 Mag in squirrel season 'in case' they see a deer at very short range that can be taken with a head shot to the eye or temple. Ideal head shot from the side in most species is between the eye and ear.

And no... I have never shot a deer in the head... and have never shot one with a 22 Mag or 9mm. Between the two, I would rather use a nice scoped 22 Mag RIFLE to allow for precise head shots.

No way in Hades would I use a 9mm Sten. They lack precision, accuracy AND power. It would kill up close in a 'have to' situation... but it would be one of the last guns I would ever intentionally choose to use. Tacti-cool doesn't exactly work in deer hunting. Lol

I’m unaware of any state where it’s legal to hunt deer with a rimfire. At least in the 5 I hunted them in it wasn’t legal.

I never said they were doing it legally. This is WV, which is fully encapsulated in the Appalachian mountains, much is very remote and isolated. Not the hardest place to get away with stuff. I do not own an isolated farm, and do NOT poach deer, but know a lot of people that do/have.

Just one comment. Not going to slam anyone. Just my opinion, backed up by some real life experience. Opinion first. I would not hunt deer with a 9mm unless I were doing it for subsistence and had no better, higher powered options. According to the OPs first post, the accuracy is there, but personally I'd cap the range at 50 yards to even consider doing this. If he's dead set on shooting a deer with the sten, the 124 XTP is probably not the best option. Don't know what the mag/chamber specs are, but wondering if it could hold a 158 XTP designed for .357?

Now for the experience. I did kill a problem black bear last summer with a 9mm handgun. It was a basic 4" FN with the 124 XTP. Shots were CNS, and bullet penetrated sufficiently, causing enough damage to anchor the bear, which was on the small side, on the spot. It will work, but I'd strongly suggest the OP acquire some other interesting piece of Militaria to have interesting hunts with. The VZ52 is a very cool weapon and more than sufficient for deer. If you want to stick with the WWII genre, an STG 44 would be Uber cool. A Thompson or M3 clone would be fun too, and probably a better choice simply due to bore diameter and bullet mass.
