Bear/woods pistol

I'm posting without reading the other replies. I like to do that and go back and see what toes I've stepped on:). Sorry if I'm beating anybodies dead horse, I don't like to do that.

My range and Grizzlies don't overlap. When I have camped in Griz country, I have carried heavier artillery in the form of an lever M99 with 180s in camp, and a .41 on the hip when walking around. If I spent more time in Griz country, I would optimize my choices for this. Now on to what I carry.

My range does overlap the range of Black Bear, Crazy hippie green activist whackadoo, and Meth junkie. I actually did use a handgun in a defensive use Vs a bear last summer....it was an FN 9mm as I wasn't carrying it where a nasty wildlife encounter was expected...When I am walking where wildlife is perceived as the larger threat than the latter 2, I wear a Taurus M66 .357 with a 6" barrel. It's stoked with a variety of loads depending on the situation. Straight up bear/general carry: 158 Speer SP at full power. This is also my deer hunting load for this handgun and a Henry single shot rifle. I know it will expand and penetrate. Campground carry: .38 Spl with the Hornady 158 SWCHP. I am concerned about overpenetration in tight quarters such as this where the neighbors may be sleeping behind nylon or thin aluminum walls. When walking on property where I can hunt or shoot random varmints or plink as opportunity presents, I'll mix in some mid range .158 SWC loads for such activities.

I've found the Taurus to be reliable, accurate enough, smooth enough, for the purpose at hand. A more refined handgun with 2" less barrel might be desireable. I'm shopping for a SW 686 so configured, but can't find one at the moment. AS things sit, I have the Taurus, it works, and I shoot it for practice much more than any other handgun I own. My proficiency on random targets from bunnys to beer cans to extended ranges sometimes surprises myself.

Depending it is either my M&P Compact 40. Or 329pd or XD 10mm. Rarely in Griz range. Mostly 2 legged, blacks or cougars.

A gun isn't the best protection from bears. The absolute best is to go to your State fish and game department and get yourself a bear tag. With that in hand you will be guaranteed to never even see a bear!

Quoted for truth! Well, I certainly don't have setup I'd like to have for bear. I would prefer a 5" S&W 629 but all I have is 9mm and .40 S&W sidearms. If I'm hiking I normally have an HK VP9 loaded with 18 rounds of 147gr +P Underwood hard cast and two spare mags and bear spray on the harness of my pack, or carried in my left hand. The .40 would be marginally better if I had the right ammo but sadly I picked it up right after Xmas and the ammo is unobtanium now. I've got 100 rounds of 180gr HST but IMO the hard cast 9mm is better than expanding .40/10mm. If I'm camping then I have a shotgun loaded with Brenneke Green Lightning slugs, better IMO than just about any handgun at least in my hands. Ultimately I'd be happier with a .44 Mag loaded with 305gr hard cast in place of the HKs for woods carry.

My hunting camp/cabin is where grizzly encounters are common.

I usually run into them several times a year while scouting and bow hunting.

My son and I both carry .44 Magnums with HSM Bear Loads and Bear Spray. I carry a Taurus Stainless M44 6” and he carries a Taurus M444 blued 6” Raging Bull.

My wife and daughters all carry .357 Magnums, various models, with HSM Bear loads and Bear Spray.

We ran into this bunch several times the last two years. This year her cubs were as big as black bears. She actually bit and clawed two people this past year. They decided that under the circumstances that she was just defending herself and her cubs, so no action was taken against her. Both times they were on a carcass and folks walked up on them.

One of the carcasses was of a 6x6 elk bull that I had killed the day before with my bow.

If I am heading across the Mississippi and to the mountains I will either be carrying my 5" 629 with Buffalo Boar 305 Gr. cast bullets or my Glock 20 with 220 Gr. underwoods going around 1200fps. I know the .44 carry's 300ft lbs more energy but I shoot Glocks way more than I do double action revolvers and if I am caught in a pinch the more familiar weapon is best.

I have 5.5" Ruger Redhawk 44 mag that I carried in Alaska for 3 weeks. I sometimes carry it on my hunting property in northern Michigan but not often. I usually carry a Ruger Security Six in 357 mag or a .45 auto, either a 1911, XD45 or Ruger P97 when out and about in the bush. And yes we have bears.

I don't have any bears near me, but I wonder how my FK BRNO PSD pistol would work. Assuming I would use the F5 ammo type with higher penetration.

Otherwise, either 10mm or maybe a Coonan 1911 in 357 Mag.

I’m going to be trying something new this year.I’v had a PMR30 for a couple years and shot more than a thousand rounds with out any problems.New England bears and moose maybe not but I have more problems with coyotes in packs plus other critters with rabies.Even if a bear was aggressive I fire 2 or 3 rounds at the ground to discourage it and still have 25 plus 22mag loaded in the pistol.it’s very accurate and lightweight.
Though I may ad a Bond Arms in 45 just in case.

The real question is how many people train with their hand cannons for the type of challenging target a charging bear would present?

There was a time when I was able to use my club's moving target system to practice with my five shot .45 Colt Blackhawk conversion. (Both the gun and the club are long gone.) It was useful practice, I think, but I honestly don't know how a fellow could realistically simulate shooting at a moving target while being scared out of his mind and running away.

Hey! What's for breakfast? Ontario, every year for 20 years they came into camp. No Handguns in Canada. I brought an M-1 Garand and 7 shot pump 12 Gauge. I fired one round of .30/06 in the air once when a big Male wouldn't leave. Didn't work, but Bear Sp IMG_0908.JPG Smokey 3.jpg ray did.

Posted my 357 Blackhawk back in post #48, and mentioned it's occasional carry duty when I'm in an area that has bears. Ninety percent of the time for bear free woods carry around here and on my friends property I've made it a habit to carry the Ruger Single Six Convertible, usually with the 22LR cylinder in it versus the 22 Mag. cylinder. Started carrying it regularly when out swapping SD cards on several trail cams in both spots. Got in a little squirrel hunting with it last fall while out doing trail cams. Managed to miss 2 shots at squirrels with it while doing that. It's my fault for not practicing enough, but I have lots of 22 rimfire ammo and it's gonna see more practice time this year. Wanted to get a picture of it with a squirrel but IIRC that was the day I missed a squirrel and settled for a shot of it on a trail cam.
Still a fun woods gun. IMG_0182.JPG ..

I don’t live in grizzly country or any bear country for that matter. I live in meth country and crazy people country. 9mm for me will serve me well. High capacity and plenty of power for two legged variety of critter. However once a year I do travel to bear country and I keep my 9 loaded with Buffalo bore outdoorsman 147 +p along with a fixed blade belt knife and bear spray

Dunno whereabouts in Dixie you are, but we have seen a resurgence of meth cookers and users here in SW Alabama. They even wander into civilization from time to time. Stay vigilant.

In the early 2000’s the forestry service reintroduced brown bears into the San Bernardino Nat’l Forest. That is where I was hunting. I confirmed this with the Nat’l Forest office in Big Bear, CA.
I was surprised to hear this and I am trying to find information online about it and I am coming up short, anything you could link us to about this?

I usually carry one of my blackhawks when out and about, 41mag or 44 special.
